  • Ok, it doesn’t actually sound as tasty as it is. If you like vinegar you’re going to love this one. If you don’t love vinegar then leave it out and you’ll still love this one. I hope you enjoy my cabbage recipe.

"Ohhh, that's garlic." 😂 I laughed so hard. This was so fun to watch!
My family has very few recipes. My mom isn't really a cook. My grandma made simple meals like goulash and roasts and such. She never wrote anything down. My grandpa made amazing waffles! He made them from scratch (no mix!) and never wrote the recipe down. We have no idea where he learned to make them. My grandma said that she knew grandpa's dementia was really bad when he stopped making the waffles. We think he forgot his own recipe. He died several years ago. My brother has tried everything he can think of to try to replicate grandpa's waffles without any luck.

My Mom made me a recipe book when I moved out of the house. I already have one started for my daughter with our favorite recipes as well as family recipes. She just turned 6. I’ll make one for my son as well who is 4.
We have gotten the kids in the kitchen as soon as they can stand on a stool to help.

My sweet baby is 1.5 years old. And I have already had him in the kitchen so much. He stands on a tall stool/chair thing and he pours all the ingredients in. He helps mix and his favorite is to season things. It fills my heart with so much joy especially when we make a recipe that my mom or grandma gave me.
We started at about 10 months old and I make sure he gets to help make dinner at LEAST once a week since then.

So my mom passed away about 5 years ago from cancer but the kitchen was a place we loved to hang out together. Befor she passed she made my siblings and I each a whole three ring binder of 100 plus recipes that where recipes passed down from her Italian family or recipes she liked or thought we would like. What's also nice is there is hand written things on some of the recipes saying when the recipe was used or something funny that happened when we had the dish. I cherish and use this book all the time! It always a fun time to cook as a family or at least have them in the kitchen when you are cooking. Food is what brings families together I think. I love seeing your video and especially when your kids or husband helps.

How sweet! I love this! When I got married 2 years ago, my mom took recipe cards from my grandmas on both side of the families (all my grandparents have passed away) and made me a recipe book. So not only did I get their recipes but their handwritten ones. It is something I will always treasure. I think it is important to still hand down recipes because they are history and memories ❤

My mom used to sit us on the countertop next to her while she cooked when we were very little and we all learned how to cook like that. She would make us participate as much as our age let us and as we got older, we started taking charge more and more and had "roles" in the kitchen. My brotehr was the salad guy, my sister was the sauce gal, and I was in charge of the sides (potatoes, veggies, rice, whatever it was we had).
And we all received a book with all of our mom, grandmom and great-grandmom's recipes in it when we all got apartments years ago. I cherish this book with all my heart and it's in a fire-resistant safe when I'm not using it.

Schematic on how the lights went in the house, holiday menus, the recipes, traditions, lists, etc. What I could, is hand written. These will be given to the children. In the mean time, nice for me to have everything in one place to use now. I can add to it each year.

I treasure the recipes written by my Mamaw Jones and wouldn’t take a billion dollars for them so I understand where she is coming from. Now, I’m 58 and have started writing down recipes for my 5 year old Granddaughter and 15 year old Grandson. There is just something special about recipes being written by the one who put their heart, soul and love in those recipes. Geez, now you got me crying. 😭

My kids are learning to joys and work to make perogies. We make big batches at least 2-3 times a year. I remember doing it with my grandmothers and now they are learning from my mom. Last Christmas we made over 75 dozen! But its so much fun. We are busy rolling and pinching and boiling but the whole time we are talking and catching up and talking about the past. I love that I get to pass this tradition down to my kids! I also have my grandmothers recipe book she got in school when she was 13-14. You can tell her fav and most used recipes by all the notes and splatters of food on the pages. One of my most treasured possessions!

Priscilla and Ab doing the cooking was really cute. Even though Abbie knew she couldn't get away with anything, she kept giggling and smiling. So sweet.

This is my absolute FAVORITE Christmas time meal! If you add egg noodles, you've got Haluski.
Personally, I use Smithfield ham rather than bacon. Then I sub some of the vinegar with pickle juice and add a splash of hot sauce into the mix!
The beauty of Haulski is that every single person's version is different even among the same family!
Sending lots of love your way Maas Family!

Are you Slovak or Polish by chance? My relatives immigrated from Slovakia decades ago & I ate this alot growing up.

I know it’s hard to have a helper sometimes but I really love seeing kids cooking with mom and dad. 🥰

I share with my kids and my oldest sister and my brother have passed away in the last 4 years and their children have been asking me for family traditional recipes... it warms my heart and keeps our memories alive.

Hey Cilla! I am my sisters' step up mommy, as I practically raised them and DO try to share my recipes with them. They do call me when trying to figure out how to make something, which feels nice. I love the connection that food and cooking creates across family lines and beyond. 🧡 I live that there are families who still pass down these traditions!
