Love to see these old ALCo's still in use. REAL locomotives that look, sound and smoke as one expects a locomotive to do.
a
Alco went out of business like 50 years ago, but look they still run great. It may be the best engine ever made.
Apparently an Indian engine manufacturer holds usage rights for one of the engine models (I believe the 251) and they still manufacture it to this day for locomotive and stationary Power generation purposes. These trains are newer than you'd think
@@cpufreak101 no, all our current diesel locomotives are EMD designs, IR stopped producing ALCOs years ago. That said, the designs are extensively modified, and ALCOs are still quite efficient when run and maintained properly.
I love the chugging sound those alcos put out, and I love the smell the motors put out when they get put to work. Awesome compilation.

@@railvideosbc luckily this locomotives now smoke less from 2020 cause someone attached a filter to them
Also alcos today now smoke white smoke which does very less pollution, but Alcos chugging sound are so nice
Really fantastic video! I am an American railfan and I am thrilled to know that Alco's are still produced in India and are alive and well!! I intend to come visit India and ride behind some of these wonderful engines myself! Thanks for this great video! Added to my favorites.
Alcos arent produced more in india too...
These are all old engines
A technological masterpiece - I my self have absolutely no idea how to make the loco smoke so much:)

The turbocharger on am Alco is called a free gas turbocharger it is driven solely by the pressure of the exhaust gas from the engine. The turbocharger doesn't begin to pressurize the air into the engine until the 5th notch of power through the 8th notch which is full power. Once the throttle position is left in either 5-6-7-or 8th notch after the engine reaches the rpm requested by the throttle position then the turbo starts to accelerate to provide the air it needs for proper combustion. There is always a lag of air from the turbocharger but once in for example the 8th notch the turbocharger spools up to provide the air needed. You will notice once at full power the smoke diminishes until nothing but heat waves are coming out of the exhaust stack. The real problem is Indian Railways are built on the lay of the land I.E.: not a constant grade hence to avoid over speeding the train the engineer has to reduce the throttle the as he's approaching the next upgrade has to open the throttle to keep the train speed up. This cause the smoke until the turbocharger gets back up to speed..
I've run Alco, GE, and EMD locomotives for years in the USA and they all smoke till the turbocharger gets up to speed. EMD uses a gear driven turbocharger as it is a 2 stroke engine and requires the gear drive to run when the engine is idling or below notch 5 the the turbocharger on an EMD runs faster than the gear drive driven by exhaust gas pressure and goes faster due to a clutch which allows the turbocharger to run faster when the exhaust gas pressure is there. Alco and GE both use free gas turbochargers with no mechanical drive at all hence they smoke a bit more till the turbocharger gets up to speed. From what I've seen of Indian Railway Alco locomotives they are maintained very well.
wow thanx for the update:)

No problem I enjoy explaining how diesel electric locomotives work. The simple way is a diesel electric locomotive is nothing more than an electric locomotive with its own onboard generator to provide electricity.

True to its heading, this is a good collection of hardcore smoking locos with the signature chugging sounds of WDM 3 Old Diesel Locos. The shot of the train over the bridge at 8:33 minutes with the noise of the train over the bridge and chugging sound of the loco is superb.
Thanks for the video, i used to drive old ALCo's over 20 years ago and if maintained they would burn clean once past the turbo lag stage. If you look at this video most of the shots are when the engines are still getting their boost pressure up and the turbo is still trying to catch up. So this is not a true indication of how they can actually burn clean after they settle down in notch 8. Also big difference is that these engines are accelerating fast due to the leaving passenger stops while most in other parts of the world were used for slow grinds with heavy freights and would sit at notch 8 for long periods of time.
Another thing was that the Southern Pacific in the USA was served a notice about the pollution that their PA's produced when departing stations in CA, so really its a trait that has been around since ALCo's were first run off the production line.
Just an observation
Thanks for sharing some of your past memories about ALCo's, nice to know , quite informative and thanks for watching :)

Very much reminds me of Erie Lackawanna /NJ Transit U34C's running commuter service out of Hoboken

I often travel by train. I love the sound when train changes track at high speed and realise we are all on the mercy of engineers.
They need triple turbos on these things, this is insane. Amazing the pistons don't melt down!!
I seriously wish our locomotives in the United States would STILL roll coal like this because it's SO DAMN COOL!
That’s f**king pollution
@@lalchandsinha8714 I mean it doesn’t matter to me if it pollutes the air
Americans have trucks that roll coal like a damn alco lol
Are there still Alcos left in US?
ALCO IS A DIVINE TREAT !!
Lovely and Beutiful bhai
Hi
Exellent & love it and reminds me of my great train journeys from the 60's till today..miss those great steam engines we used to travel from North & West India to our south west coast in our child hood & later these great bullish smoking Alcos..till date we prefer to travel by 🚆 trains rather take an flight or bus..love my great Indian railways..😍💪🙏💐
Very truly said Diesel Engines are more charming and Train journeys always bring loads of memories that can be cherished even after decades !
@@TheRailzone ,
I love real story
very nice to watch
Very beautifully shot. Nice camera angles....
Really enjoyed watching. Great smoke and sound effects
Hell hardcore chugging & smoking of Indian ALCO locomotives...
All chain smokers sit on ALCO locomotive will quit smoking, also smokers will get nightmares after watching ALCO locomotive smoking.....
Nice video, the show must go on......

Awesome! I Love all the smoke that goes in the air!
Ya it sure darkens the sky with pollution! I love to see it!

This is why the alcos are called "honorary steam engines".
But these are not steam engines.
I love Alco loco and alco loco horn 📯
Are they stuck on the rail way forever 🤔
Indian railroads are interesting. Track looks well maintained and they run very heavy trains at high speeds on their wide rail gauge. Same size loads on US railways would always have 2 or more locomotives hauling. Alco 251 engines were always famous for making smoke, but many of the locomotives shown simply have worn-out turbochargers and injectors. Some of those Alcos would be over 50 years old so they have done pretty well.

Красота👍, люблю железную дорогу!
Excellent video!
Thanks for watching , appreciate.
Beautiful 🥰❤️❤️
The answer is easy:At idle, the turbocharger dont blow air and run slowly. When the driver put full throttle(nearly notch 8 or 8) ) a lot of fuel go to the cylinders, but the charger need some tiime to rise in rpm and begin to blow air. until this the charger make negative relative presure to the intake manifold, when begin to blow, this negative intake presure become to possitive pressure, and more air go to the cylinders, then the mixture air -fuel go to the ideal 17:1 and the combustion is better ,and the smoke is less . This is a disadventahe of the 4 stroke diesel(one intake each 4 strokes) vs 2 strokes(one intake each 2 strokes). In 2 strokes the charger rises his turns quickly.
Yeah , so the LP or ALP sometimes move at notch 1 to notch 8 in 1 second which causes all the smoke .
nowadays only DLW is the manufacturer of classic ALCO locomotives.Keep going DLW.
Apparently in 10-15 years these will be retired from mainline action as electrification is completed sadly
Xem phim xey
DLW engines are different from ALCo engines. Diesel loco works are getting entire power pack units from EMD.
wow!-can't believe the smoke from these trains!
Whatever happened these scenes in IR...!
who manufactures those locos please? Are they built locally or imported?
They are now manufactured in India.
the alco sound from 11:31 to 12:00 just wow
I think these two smoking locos are rebuild steam engines in a Diesel loco. :-) you, some new old vintage, smile. Thank you for uploading and sharing. cu Toni
Indian Railways must run the longest passenger trains in the world.
peter charles The longest passenger trains are upto 26 coaches. Generally Passenger Express trains are of 23 Coaches.
Different coaches accommodate different capacity. Just for Knowledge,
Unreserved - 90 seating.
Sleeper - 72 sleeping.
A.C. 3 tier - 64 sleeping berths.
A.C. 2 tier - 48 sleeping berths.
Chair Car - 108 seats.
And so on, many different classes are there.
Un
Technically, the world's longest passenger train is the Amtrak Auto Train, but it's a controversial contender as it isn't all passenger cars, it's mostly autoracks
such a beautiful great and mind blowing captures bhai just Amazing 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩😍😍😍😍😍😍😍🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
keep it up 🤗
In fairness ALCO locos of similar vintage smoke just as heavily in the US or Australia. These locos must have turbos like dustbins! Having said that, once the engine is up to speed, just a haze at the exhaust port. Just takes them a while to get there......
Loved this video so much 💙

Oh dear, how sad.
Exactly
Right at the end when the loco passed under you, I really could hear the Alco rumble. Thanks for sharing.
+ncplantdoctor Thanks for watching , appreciate :)
Nice video!
In Some case, the problem is the driver throttle up the locos too fast. As a result fuel pump feed too much diesel to engine and the diesel have no time to burn properly. The turbos also take some time to charge up the engine. As a result black fumes exhausts. The diesel locos need to throttle up slowly and in every notch there should be so time gap, so that the engine rev up properly.
Very well said, yes they abruptly pull to the max throttle resulting in this disaster.
Subhajit Seth yeah seriously well said..but the no. of wagons pulled up by diesel engine's in ascend area..the driver has no other option but throttle up quickly
Good point but are you sure that the smoking problem is not due to old engines needing a overhaul or new engines. India is a fast rising economy and one would think that they would be working on their infrastructure first before spending billions on their space program.
However, I'm sure that the government bean counters and politicians know what they are doing! It just seems to me that if one had a business with old equipment that was breaking down all the time and inefficient and costly to operate, that one would fix the old equipment and/or rep[lace them with new equipment before building ones self a mansion! But what do I know!
On the other hand, it's good that there are not hundreds of people hanging on the cars and stacked on top, so that's a improvement!
I have seen the videos of the old steam engine days and India's excellent maintenance facilities, is it different now that they have diesel engines?
Would it be cheaper to rebuild and repair or upgrade the systems on these engines or by new ones? It's almost painful to watch these poor old engines doing the best they can with what seems a lack of proper maintenance!
Nightlightabcd: i am not an economist. In technical aspect, i am sure what i had written and the point by Ranjit Ranjan is also correct. The train had a good number payloads to haul. So sometime pulling the throttle too fast is necessary for avoid stalling.. that i can say.
Subhajit Seth hyuop
In Williams, Arizona, the Grand Canyon Steam locomotives don't run on coal anymore. They run on vegetable oil I think.
Mighty ALCO locomotives
After 5 to 10 yrs we all are going to miss these locomotives
Alco locomotives is a real chugging master . ❤❤❤❤❤ l love the chugging sound
Yes, thanks
These train videos are really great
Damn, the Indians work their trains kinda hard don't they.
I see India is doing their part to help the environment.
8:40 this is endless.
With the length of these trains, you only need one station in each city
this is india not usa population is high
Holy smoke. I love it. These engines must be smoking weeds. Overall, cool video

Wonderful photography, @TheRailzone. What camera did you use?
Alcos are very efficient locomotives.
And going to cause GLOBAL WARMING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Valoro85 stupid idiot. these locos are a economical disaster like whole india....
And they said steam was bad for the environment 😷
george smith not the steam bro,the smoke from coal is bad and this smoke of diesel engine is not for ever,it reduces as the engine picks up the speed. This engine is a generator set that supplies electricity to the big electrical motors atteched to the wheels of the engine.
barjinder toor ...Gee thanks for the info. I had no idea how a diesel electric locomotive worked. snork, snork
A good fireman on a steam locomotive can run a clean stack that's cleaner than these things are currently running. You'll see very little smoke from any American mainline oil fired 4-8-4 IE Santa FE 3751 or UP 844
I don’t care about the air or the environment i like all the smoke!
are the turbos out on these
Yes alco just rocks !
I love the chugging sound mera kaan ya sun ne ka liya taras gaya tha
They come from a time when start up & acceleration smoke was ok. Most of those are probably worn out and tired

Not really. Diesel engines are like workhorses. Retires after at least 20-30 years of service.

All Alco Locos are currently being phased out. Possible after 10 years they won't appear.
A Singh its Sad that next generation children will not see Diesel engines in action, after 10 to 15 years. By keeping the Videos preserved is the way, we will show them that Once Diesel engines did Exist.

Rail noises, like pinging as the rail settles under the weight of the train. If you put your ear on the rail when the train is still far off, you can faintly hear the same pinging transmitted through the rail.
That’s what I call clean burning!

Totally smoked 👌
Thats why I love Alcos. 😍😍
It looks like India has "broad gauge" tracks and on double track the trains run on the same side as the trains on Union Pacific in and around Chicago
Scoobydoo Carr What's the difference between indian and American railways
Scoobydoo Carr Yes Indian Railway has Broad Gauge 1676mm.
Few heritage mountain railways in India have narrow gauge, ex- 600mm gauge, 762mm gauge, 1000mm gauge.
Standard Gauge 1435mm only on Metro Lines and Trams.
Scoobydoo Carr ... Yes something like automobiles in India; right hand drive.

Really, very, very good video. Beautiful place. Near Bangalore?
What the heck are they using for fuel?
Why so much smoke emission? Some tuning fault?
india is on 45 to 50 percent of electrification and till 2019- 2020 it will be 80 - 90 percent then these locomotives will not be seen or if seen they would be mainly used for shunting trains to platforms or during a electric power failure
SO ENJOY THESE LOCOS TILL THEY ARE ALIVE THEIR EXTINCTION IS NEARBY 😢😢
