Update: a few weeks later and I'm absolutely cruising through the game. Almost entirely thanks to these tutorials, and especially the combat tutorials (the hint to change to mouse rather than keyboard strafing changed everything!)
You can stretch your capture so it gets your screen perfectly, even adds in black bars if it's needed. Also your mic was a bit low, if you go into the configuration for the sound output in obs, you can set your sound to a %, for instance 150%. You've probably done this already but just in case, thanks for the video :)

Making youtube videos must be so hard. I've not even booted the game, as I learned about it like 6 hours ago, through a "THIS GAME IS TOTALLY BALANCED" video, from a fairly popular channel. I bought the game, installed it. Then spent maybe 3 hours doing other things. I've decided to play it. I wanted to catch some advice, so I popped a Four Loco, and spent the last 35 min picking through some plain leftover grilled, bone-in chicken breast, from yesterday (cheap af, good deal.) I'm the type to suck bones clean of even cartilage, so it's a slow process. So far, this is the third intro video I've seen about this new game I'm excited to play as soon as I finish eating/drinking. Of the three, you far out performed the others when it comes to grainularly breaking down information, which as a super noob, I desire. Unfortunately, a lot of learning a game, is understanding the interface. Getting a grasp of what I'm looking at. Since I've never played, I don't know how much of the interface is missing, but whatever fraction that has been cut off, is devastating. It's silly how much a small mistake like that can be multiplied by a game this complex. I love the video, appreciate the effort, and will definitely finish/like it. I don't want this to be negative, honestly it's more of an appreciation of how hard even a basic tutorial must be. Recording, editing, rendering, uploading. That missing bit at the bottom... It's a lot of information. I'll likely finish my meal by the time the video ends, so I'll try and fill in the blanks by playing. If I wanted to convey any message, it would be to encourage the extremely granular explanation of everything on screen. Explaining every little detail is the right move. Also, it's a shame that such a small, and easily made mistake, so dramatically effects this video's usefulness as a tutorial, since we can't see every little detail. Much love
I must've played this game like 7 years ago or something. Loved it to bits, but figured it was an abandoned game that was never going to get finished. So happy I was wrong. Too bad it was lost from my memory.
I came searching for something to help me through, and I picked the EXACT starting settings you did, so this should help a lot. I CAN NOT kill the 2nd mission with the 3 ships defending the probe. They obliterate me and I do basically no damage.
I spent way too long thinking the "invert strafe and turn to cursor" meant inverting left and right for some reason, I guess I missed the word "behavior" 🤦♂️
Just one suggestion for future tutorials always use what you would reccomend for a new player. Don't pick the hardest start pick the easiest explain why and what you should aim for with it. This makes it eaiser for a pleb like me to mimic what you're doing
I can see where you're coming from. I originally made this video in response to a thread on the forums where a guy was having trouble with the tutorial's combat, and was claiming it was too hard. I wanted to show him it was possible to beat even on the hardest available setting, and how to accomplish that. While I do plan to make a full New Player's campaign once I finish the basic overview videos, I won't be continuing with the save shown here. I hadn't decided which start to use for it, but you've given me some good food for thought :D

If I wasn't already loaded up with several games that take up most of my gaming time, I'd get this game in a heartbeat. It looks great. As it is, it's on my "get it later" list.

oof I watched the critique of Minecraft by whitelight then the serious improvement for minecraft by whitelight and in that video there were like a few second clip of Sseth playing starsector and now I find myself here after wrecking my first fleet.
Love the look of this game, but I just can't get to grips with the combat. Have been through the tutorials a number of times, but still can't beat anything that shoots back.
I actually build my character around this. You'll see lots of people focus on the combat tree skills. I focus instead on things that improve my fleet as a whole and give me more officers. So don't feel bad about it. Not all of us are combat gods, and even the ones who are didn't start that way :D
Is there a part in particular I can clarify for you? (Sorry if it was too fast; this is meant to be a brief guide to the new player's tutorial that is in the game rather than a comprehensive tutorial in its own right.)

I once lucked out on the salvage for the automatic defenses fight, got 2 gamma AI cores, maid quite a lot of capital off of that so early on

Even gothic 1 and 2 wasn't that hard. I immediately get gang raped by pirates and rebel miners after 3 minutes after starting the game.
