Series 60 or any motor, crank but no start. TRS (Timing Reference Sensor)

  • This TRS is called crank sensor on a car and I'm sure all motors with a ECM on cars, trucks and probably even late model motorcycles will have a crank sensor and or a cam sensor of some sort to tell the ECM (electronic control module) what the crankshaft and camshaft timing are at any given point so the fuel and (ignition on gas motors) is to be delivered to each cylinder at the precise time. Here in this video is an example of the TRS or crank sensor on a series 60 Detroit.
    It will probably be in a similar position on any motor and can be on either side or on the rear of a motor including the bell housing as well.

    TRS , Timing Reference Sensor
    DDEC 3 / 4 SRS sensor located above air compressor , gives the ability to start the engine . Great videos Gordon !

    i got a series 60 in my KW same yr as yours and it takes a notion not to start i give it a shot of ether it lights off and im on my way , had it overhauled a couple yrs ago and they put a new internal harness on the injectors that seemed to have fixed the problem but after about 90 days went back to the same old non start condition again im wondering now if the same sensor you just changed might be the culprit

    • @georgebartsch1055
      @georgebartsch1055 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had the same issue on my detroit, changed the sensor and never had to use ether again. Mine seemed to start fine cold but when warm the sensor wouldn't read right and a shot of ether would get it going.

    • @57bagre
      @57bagre  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching Tim. Since that is an easy part to change and not too costly might as well go for it, the other sensor (SRS) is harder to do but I will do that and a video when I get the truck home for the holiday. Happy Thanksgiving.

  • @jamesedwards8274

    Hey Gordon thanks for the video, I noticed the long start after you changed the sensor. Did that go away after your batteries were charged or did changing the other one fix it?

    • @57bagre
      @57bagre  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for watching. I don't know why it did that, I haven't had that problem before, I think maybe it lost it's prime from trying to start it before replacing the sensor.

    hey gordon
    i just got new reman 12.7l put in from detroit. it has all sensors new and got all new accessories, clutch, trans
    the truck having hard start. i have to crank for 20 seconds and then it will rumble and then start with some white smoke then its smooth and runs good with no issues and no leak of power. if i turn off for 1-2-3 hours its fine. but overnight, it will be hard start
    mechanic said its fuel lines sucking air and he want to change all lines with estimate of $3000 for lines and labor
    since both sensors are new
    what could it be ?
    could it be lines ? my dad is old school driver says its the check valve behind the motor the reason.
    like i said its having hard start. i have to crank for a while then try again then it starts or with ether it will start quickly.

    • @57bagre
      @57bagre  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I really don't know. $3000 is way too much for fuel lines, if you could find a way to put a little air pressure on the fuel tanks you will see if there is a fuel leak in any of the fuel lines which would be a vacuum leak on the suction when truck is running but I don't think that is the case.

  • @zaidchalabi1599

    gordon we need a video on cam seal
    got a leak and mechanic wants to do full overhaul and truck running great with good oil pressure as im topping off oil every 3-4 days

    • @57bagre
      @57bagre  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can't do a special video on something like that unless my truck was down for that reason but I might have that covered in my series on the in frame overhaul, look in my playlists for that.

    • @zaidchalabi1599
      @zaidchalabi1599 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@57bagre does it really need an overhaul
      or it could be just changing seal.?

    • @57bagre
      @57bagre  ปีที่แล้ว

      The rear seal is not too hard to change but the front one is not worth the trouble just for that, better to just get used to adding oil and cleaning the motor more often. You don't need an overhaul for that.

    • @zaidchalabi1599
      @zaidchalabi1599 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@57bagre thats what i have been doing last 30k miles
      adding a quart every 3 days or so
      i also have a leak from seal between air compressor that that little accessory drive thats attached to front cover on driver side
      that leaks alot. any idea if i normally need just the seal
      or accessory drive as well
      air compressor working fine
      but oil leak blows everywhere and especially over ecm and i dont wsnt to put pressure washer on it.

    • @57bagre
      @57bagre  ปีที่แล้ว

      The accessory in front of the compressor is the power steering pump, you can take that off and clean the gasket surface with a sharp scraper and dry it off with brake cleaner and put some Permatex Gasket Maker www.amazon.com/Permatex-82194-High-Torque-Silicone-Gasket/dp/B000HBGI8K/ref=sr_1_6?crid=2EQUI2T8I6K32&keywords=permatex+gasket+maker&qid=1669042747&sprefix=permatex%2Caps%2C116&sr=8-6
      any color on and do not buy a new gasket, only use the silicone.
      You do not need to add a quart of oil at a time to the motor, as long as you get something on the stick your fine, you can put 1 or 2 gallons at a time in. Doesn't hurt to go down to the end of the stick or to over fill a half gallon or more.
      I'll try to do a video on patching leaks on the series 60 this coming weekend.

    The oil that made it easy to get out is also what caused it to fail in the first place.
