I love the touch about Flag Captains being drawn from a short list of largely suitable brown-nosers, rather than from the ranks of proven battlefield commanders.
I love the fact that along with getting a prestigus position in society as being a post captain, another note worthy perk of the position is drip. I Fucking love this series. Never Stop.
I've not listened to this audio series, but you have gone great lengths to go in very great detail for this universe. I'm going to buy this @ Christmas time and check it out!
great lore, that answer the old question of mine about the rank of captain and a captain of a ship also I didn't realize that CDF Frigates and ships of the line were similar in size. I assumed the Frigates were smaller.
How many sets of silverware? Does it come with serving ware too, how about crab forks, can that be ordered? Is this just forks/knives/spoons, or does it include chopsticks too?
Despite being rather common theme in sci-fi for admirals commanding the ship themselves, I found it to be weird and rather impractical. In real life, admirals and other flag ranks are assigned to command the fleet, not the ships, captain still has the final say in ship operations. Real life admiral are actually have no authority over the certain functions of the ship they are on, in fact, captain actually have the authority to overrule admiral’s order regarding the ship if they deemed to be against the regulations. The admiral can give order to ship skipper but he technically cannot give orders directly to the ship’s crew without captain’s consent. The flagship is pretty much any ships that flag officers choose to be on certain operations, they do not have a specific ships they are assigned to but the fleet. Most don’t have a specific flagships at all but rather commanding from the shore based and only hoisted their flags at sea. It also isn’t uncommon for the admiral to transfer the flag to other ship. Think about it, if the flagship is heavily damaged during the battle and the admiral has to transfer the flag, who will command the ship if that admiral is also the ship CO? (Yeah, they have XO but still) The other thing to consider is the efficiency. Commanding the fleet is a lot of work especially the large one, now imagine having to command the fleet and also the ship which is also a hard work, no human can effectively do both at the same time in the heated battle. And for those captain who are promoted to an admiral, there’re not much chance for them to command the fleet that their old ship is a part of. Most of the time, the’ll be promoted then assigned to other fleet. I mean, Nimitz hadn’t use Augusta as his flagship neither did Fletcher hoisted the flag on New Mexico when they got promoted.
I mostly agree, but want to point out that Admirals can command individual ships for example the first sea-going captain of Royal Navy's Carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth was in fact a Commodore (1-Star Flag-Officer equivalent to Rear-Admiral lower-half in the USN) Commodore (now Vice-admiral retired) Jerry Kyd who also dual hatted as "Commander United Kingdom Carrier Strike Group" at the same time and commanded both the Carrier and the CSG.
@@sabrehagen9423 Yes that’s correct he did hand over COMUKCSG just after assuming command of QE however My dad worked directly under VAdm Kyd for 5yrs from 2015 to 2020 until he retired, during Westlant 18 he routinely exercised direct command both over the Carrier itself and the escorts as the then COMUKCSG Cdre Betton was for various reasons absent from command for a large part of the deployment, and Capt/Cdre Kyd assumed acting COMUKCSG during those periods as no designated Deputy COMUKCSG as assigned for the deployment.
@@Autofleet4429You’re right in that case, the admiral can definitely be a ship CO if they are assigned by higher ups to do so, and it also wasn’t uncommon for the CO of some ships to be assigned to command a small detachments. But still, it wasn’t as prevalent as it is in Sci-fi. My uncle also commanded a small carrier task group when he got promoted to Senior Captain (Kinda like a stopgap ranks between captain and rear admiral in RTN as they don’t have a Commodore (QF-6) rank) while still being a ship skipper. But that’s only briefly.
Interesting divergence from the Honorverse's Royal Manticorian Navy's similar rank structure, especially with Flag Captain. I see hints of Lyran Commonwealth Social Generals. Not saying you're just combining bits of other's stuff, just how similar ideas that make the universe feel real are woven into each setting.
Agreed, but in the realm of fiction spaceships and space navies are so often just WW2 in terminology and categorization (Expanse's Battleship, Frigate, Captain, Marines, Torpedoes), or in literal mechanics (Star Wars dogfighters), so anything off the beaten path is welcome.

As a fan of the Aubrey-Maturin series, this makes me very happy

The inclusion of rank insignia was a nice addition IMO. Im a sucker for that stuff
I love the little tidbits and information on the little stuff like this. Did I need to know they get their own cut glasses? No, but im happy I do!
Always nice to have new lore for this great universe you have crafted
Lovely addition to the lore, as always, guys!
Fair Winds!!!
Lore like that if the sojourn motivated me to start making my own lore, potentially for a little story. Love it!
WELL done, Herr Orrett & Company.
Fair winds to all those lives lost in the attack over the Green House

More lore, is always good lore
Love these! Keep them coming!
Well presented. Thank you.

They are but historically post captains would command frigates and ships of the line

The truly important questions.
For a moment I thought Post Captain meant someone who was captain of a postal vessel.

So this is just age of sail in space. I really think we need to think of new stuff for space ships.

WWII in space is fun
