      stock! 0.6 liter over means more fuel which means more heat. these are not sophisticated engines. same block and rods, different crank and pistons. or different or same pistons, different rods. anything with mods comes with consequences

    I have been chasing heat issues for a while but I am super satisfied with my setup now. I have an 04 TJ 4.0 with the 42RLE auto. I live I California and my temp never goes above 210 WITH the A/C running. I upgraded my radiator to a 4 core aluminum radiator, stock 195 thermostat. I also invested in a new A/C condenser and I have an auxiliary 16 inch fan mounted in my grill (for my A/C when I’m sitting in traffic). The trick that I think can help you out is to install a super heavy duty fan clutch combined with a 9 blade fan from a 1993 Ford Explorer. This makes such a difference I’m surprised it’s not talked about more. I did this a couple months back when it was still hot and I literally cruise around at 190 to 200 with my a/c cranked full blast climbing hills and everything. Hope this helps

      Thanks for posting this, I may explore different fan blades on the XJ fan clutch. With the limited space in the XJ engine compartment and the thickness of the radiator, when I had the ZJ fan clutch installed, the fan was 1/4" to 1/2" away from the radiator and I just wasnt comfortable with it being that close. Now I have solid poly motor mounts so it doesnt flex much, but it still wasn't ideal for me. The fan blades is a great topic, I am going to research some options, so thank you!

    Don't forget about the heat that the transmission generates. Stuffing an auxiliary transmission cooler can reduce the strain on the radiator.

      I recommend moving the tranny cooler somewhere else with its own fan. That heat blowing off the tranny cooler through the condenser n radiator only adds to the problem. A pusher fan in front of the condenser is also helpful. Maybe a two fan system with variable fan speeds from a Taurus might help to lower those Temps. You really shouldn't be over 195-200 max imo.       @@nonsequitur807 This is definitely something I wanted to do in the future. I need to find a good location under the Jeep that will not get damaged from offroading. I also need to post an update video now that I have 20k miles on the engine and my cooling system has been rock solid all summer. A new catalytic converter (old one was plugged) , 180 degree thermostat, replacing the transmission fluid, made a world of difference. Never gets above 220 now.

    The single best upgrade that I have done to date has upgraded the fan clutch from the XJ to the ZJ. I had even ran the $1000 triple core electrical fan, but my engine just could keep cool. I upgraded the radiator to the Mishimoto, swapped the fan clutch, and just kept the stock electrical fan. I live in Georgia, but I am hard pressed to get my Jeep over 210 degrees- even on the highway. The main con is the noise- you will hear the fan.

    Brother your story mirrors mind but I am in a 2000 nissan Maxima with a mishimoto radiator, my fixwas adding two SPL fans, seems to have fix my issue. I was over heating going over the grape vine. Thanks for pointing me to the ac condenser, I never thought about that, I will replace that before I stroke the Maxima to 3.3 liters.

    Check out Matt's Towing and Recovery. He put one is his and abuses that thing yanking stuff out. He added hood vents and a fan shroud and regularly runs in 110 degree weather.

    The stock water pump does not work well with the Mishimoto radiator. You need a Hesco water pump. Huge difference!!!! You lose water pressure, flow, & turbulence with a big radiator and a stock water pump. It solved all of my issues. I also put a fiberglass hood on with a front scoop inlet. I went from 250 degrees temps down to 180-197. Hood vents work wonders as well. I’ve tested everything. I did Everything to try to cool it down and the water pump did the fix. I even installed windshield washer squirters to spray down the radiator before I climbed grades. Moreover, I remote mounted my trans cooler so it does not block airflow to the radiator when Mounted in front of the radiator. This definitely helped a bit. I eventually put 33” KO2’s tires back on to reduce rotating weight which also helped.

      @@cleanEG I did some research and got the information from a company called Stewart components. Super helpful technical information. I have a house in Landers as well if you ever go out that way. Great video by the way! I also had my blocked pressure cleaned by my friend’s radiator shop with 40 psi of air and a cleaning detergent. I like ur insight with the ax condenser. I’ll have to try that next. Thor intake also helps with the intake temps. I haven’t tried it yet but I have heard that putting a quality heat shield under the intake makes a difference too. You have to remove it to install it correctly.

    5200lbs. Now you have me curious what my jeep and trailer setup weight is for a standard 4day trip. Also that climb up to mammoth is no joke. I saw a drop in ECT when I did a full rad. Trans cooler delete.
    I can now hit 185 trans temp and 210 ECT. Loaded and doing 65/70.

      I'm with you on this idea as well. I'm going to do a remote trans cooler and keep the front of the jeep open to fresh air. I'm already bypassing the radiator with my cooler, but it still adds heat to the front. Especially in low, slow climbs off-road

      @@cleanEG keep an eye on the trans temp, unlocked pulling a grade it'll skyrocket much quicker without the radiator in series. Manually shifting to 3 usually keeps it locked unless you're flooring it.

      Those really help! I have holes cut in the hood that the previous owner did. I can see the heat waves on those hot summer days.

    I'm surprised you didn't opt to go with a flowkooler watter pump and a hesco high-flow thermostat housing I did this with a stock 4.0 and I also had a mishimoto radiator and my coolant Temps were like 5 to 10 degrees cooler than before now granted I didn't have a stroker but I could only imagine that you would gain similar effects from the point your at

    They make high flow water pumps I forget the brand name but i hear they work wonders.
    edit: Flow Kooler or hesco. Double the flow at idle but returns to stock flow over 3500 rpms.

      Thanks Kallam - I had a flowkooler in the original 4.0 when I was trying to solve some cooling issues and to be honest, I didnt notice a difference . I figured I would try the mopar OEM water pump this time and maybe swap in the flowkooler if the temps didnt go down. Thanks for bringing that up, because I know some people that have had good luck with it.

      I've always felt that High flow pumps and thermostats don't give enough time for the radiator/fan to cool down the coolant.. A solid radiator/fan set up with 195° Tstat have always been my go too..

    Did you ever put a ZJ fan clutch in? Made a huge difference for me when solving heat issues. Makes your fan spin faster at idle, and engage at a lower temperature. I also wonder, is there any way you could put small fans under your hood vents to help pull the air through? Love the build man. I get a lot of inspiration from your videos!

      I did the ZJ fan clutch but with the bigger radiator, the fan was so close to the radiator I didnt want to keep it. I also noticed it would run cooler while moving but not so much at idle. Thanks for the kind words! All of the positive comments help motivate me to make more videos :)

    I have a Russ Pottenger 4.6/4.7 build. Something like 4500.00 for the parts and machine work alone . 97 TJ . Ended up having to also do a custom flash of my ECU for 900 bucks. All in all, to do it over, I would of went with a V8. The 4.0 is by NO means a turd but to reach higher performance levels I wouldn't build an engine up to try to reach it, I'd just get a junk yard V8 and go that route. My dyno numbers were no where near what I had hoped for.

      Sorry to hear the dyno numbers didn't turn out as expected. I contemplated going with a v8 in my XJ, but the juice wasn't worth the squeeze for a variety of reasons. Primarily, to get through CA emissions, it would have been cumbersome and more expensive. With that being said, if I lived elsewhere and the XJ were more of a toy instead of a daily driver, I would probably lean towards a v8.

    When I ran a mishimoto I had to back flush it often and saw huge temp reductions each time. Coolant wasn't even bad looking. Oxidation builds up in the bottom of it (iron/aluminum don't get along) and each time you drive it it gets stirred up and clogs the veins. Switched to a stock radiator with ZJ clutch and reprogrammed the ECM to bring the factory E-fan (not an amazon knockoff) on at 195', so no more switch. No problems since.

      Good to know - I have since been running a 180 degree thermostat now for a year which has been exactly what I needed during the warm months. I also did a full transmission flush and added a transmission temp gauge. I noticed that the fluid was in bad shape (dirty brown color) and after 3-4 flushes using the drain + add method, it made a significant difference. On the trail, if I'm climbing up a mountain the transmission will stay much cooler in 4-low since it doesnt have to work as hard in 2wd. It's not a matter of needing 4-low to crawl over obstacles as much as it changes the gear ratio for the AW4 to work less.

      @@cleanEG good call on the 180 stat, forgot to mention I run one too. I use 4lo on longer hilly trails (that are otherwise fine in 2wd) to keep the trans temp down. A trick for 2wd temps is to put it in 3rd gear, which enables torque converter lockup.

    Great Video, very informative. I have a 4.6L Golen Stroker in my TJ, an aluminum radiator with electric fan, AND A HOOD VENT INSERT. I live in AZ and the engine temp is stable, just above 210. Have you considered installing a Hook Vent insert?

      Thanks for the compliment! Yes, I do have holes drilled in the hood which have helped for slow speed crawling or idling. One of the design flaws of the XJ is the size of the radiator. There isnt much room under the hood and the radiator is only 11" tall (essentially the size of the front grill). If only the XJ had a frame and more engine space! :D

    Go with an actual cold air intank and a high flow water pump. Also try and convert over to e85 you'll see more power and 30% cooling on top of that with the fuel.

    I have a 1988 Renix XJ with a 4.7L ATK Stroker. when its over 85 degrees outside its horrible as far as temps. I have installed a new champion dual core radiator, high flow water pump and thermostat housing, ZJ fan clutch, Evans Waterless coolant, new hoses, a new 2000 efan and new sensors both on the block and the radiator. At idle at any outside temp, it never goes above 210. On freeway speeds, or hills it rises and has gone up to 240 at outside temps of 85 or higher even on flat highway. I replaced my condenser when I put the 4.7 motor in 5,000 miles ago and have not used AC at all. I have hood louvers to help with heat soak. This issue has driven me crazy, and it bugs me as I can't really use my jeep in summer for overlanding trips. Hopefully, after I get the golden 4.6 replacement in, it will do better. i will be buying one this spring. Maybe a better fan that can push more air and will fit like a contributor suggested below.

      Hi John, For the past year I have had zero issues with high temps, even when outside temps are 108 in the mojave desert. Getting to this point took some effort. I am running a single row, spectra radiator with 180 degree thermostat. Oem XJ fan clutch. Bypassed radiator for transmission aw4 and run external cooler. Flushed AW4, because I found brown dirty fluid. I monitor trans temps climbing steep grades and turn on my aux fan which is wired to a switch. The aux fan is a SPAL fan, which puts out proper CFM. I also had to install a new catalytic converter because mine was partially plugged. Flush the cooling system once per year. This has led to my temps never reaching higher than 228 on the hottest days with AC on. Hope this helps 👍

      One more thing, my compression ratio is slightly higher than stock and low enough to run 87 octane without pinging.

    What kind of mpg were you seeing on the road trips after the stroker swap?

      Great question - When fully loaded and the spare 33" tire on the roof rack, I get about 13 mpg average if I keep the highway speed under 70mph. That includes some hill climbing, etc. The Jeep does weigh in at 5200lbs and with 4.88 gears my rpms at 70mph are 2850. If cruise at 65mph, I pick up 1mpg on average. Daily driving on highway @ 65mph without spare on roof, tools, camping gear, etc - then I can get closer to 15 mpg. Around town, I put my foot into the pedal too much so it's around 12.5

      When going 70mph are you in 3rd or drive? Seems too high for me. I have 32 inch tires with 4.56 gearing and at 70mph while the torque converter is locked up my rpms are a little under 2000.

    That seems hot to me. My golens runs 180 to 190 with stock radiator and fans 90 percent of time. 100 degree day with black hood on it absorbing heat never really goes over 210. And all my stock 4.0s usually ran 200 to 210. Jeep 4.0s have been known to run all over the map they originally were built to run hotter for emissions

    You should get a high flow water pump and thermostat. I never go over 210... Ever. I also have all aluminum 2 core radiator and aux trans cooler.

    How did you wire up your Spal fan? I believe the Spal connection is a 2 wire and the OEM plug is a 3 wire with hi speed and low speed.

      With 4.88 gears and keeping it under 70mph on mostly flat ground, 14mpg on average.

      It was very much plug and play - externally the engine is exactly the same as the original 4.0.

    Check your ac condensor they get dirty and it restricts air flow. My Cherokee had the same problem until i replace it with a new one.

    Awesome videos. Very informative. Is the 4.6 Stroker engine simply a 4.0 that has the cylinders enlarged/deepened, or it is a different engine? I have a 1994 XJ with a manual transmission and I have no power going over the mountain passes here in Colorado. I'm seriously considering spending the $5K and have a shop install a 4.0 Stroker engine. I understand it can increase my 190 HP to about 250 HP. Thanks.

      Thanks! Yep, the same block but with a larger bore and a longer stroke from a different crankshaft. This includes custom pistons as well. On the outside, everything looks OEM. It definitely increased horsepower but with the inline six, they produce alot of torque which really helps on those long hill climbs, especially at elevation.

      I did ALOT to my 4.6 Russ Pot build. True cold air through the firewall, port and polished 7120 head and 99+ intake, custom tune, blah blah. end of the day I got something like 75 more hp than a stock 4.0. Wasn't worth it.

    How many miles have you put on this stroker motor so far an reason I ask is because I read threads online people saying there strokers died at 10k miles some say Golen Engine Co 4.6 strokers grenade at 20k or less I want more opinions do tell me people

      I've put about 6 or 7k miles on the engine so far and hopefully it doesnt grenade! I would have myself to blame though because I did the assembly myself, however I'm pretty confident that it will last just as long as the factory 4.0. I think assembly is important and also choosing the right parts. I also put together a very mild build, meaning the compression ratio allows me to run 87 octane, so it's far from a "race" engine. Russ put together a reliable combination for me and I have another friend with almost the same setup without any issues. I know it's a big investment so I hope this helps you out.

      Thanks for getting back to me. I've been thinking of doing something about my engine and your build looks really great.
      Looking for some power on my 06 TJ I just rebuilt it.
      Since we live at 5,000 ft elevation. A boost in hp plus some extra torque is a nice thing to have. Been rolling a lot of ideas around in my head.

    What octane fuel are you running?

      I've been running 91 octane fuel 99% of the time. On a few trips where 87 was the only octane available I used that. It was designed to run on 87 for that reason.

    Evans waterless coolant boils at 375° good to 40 below weather try this it'll work a lot better than what you have in your Cherokee

      I'm glad you asked, because I forgot to mention that I tried the ZJ fan clutch for a while but it wasn't improving my idle air flow. Only slightly improved flow on the highway but I also lost some power. In addition, the ZJ clutch is really really close to the mishimoto radiator and I wasn't comfortable with it. After going with the SPAL fan, I put the XJ fan clutch back in.

    If you put a ZJ clutch on your clutch fan you end up with about 6000cfm with the shroud which pretty much makes it so your efan never turns on unless the AC is on although it makes the jeep sound like a school bus from outside.

    What gear do you have? You could also look into a remote oil cooling system as well.

      Currently running 4.88 years. I think this summer I'm putting in a remote trans cooler with fan on a temperature switch. Now that I'm monitoring my trans temperature, the cooler I have in front of my condenser is adding heat in an area I need fresh air.

    So if you have a stock 99 XJ, would you recommend swapping the driveshaft and some suspension parts? I’m thinking about swapping a 4.0 to a golen 4.6 stroked.

      Not sure I follow your question, but if it's a used stroker I would ask for a build sheet on it and get more information.

      Um yes. Get an SYE kit and a HD driveshaft from Adams or Tom Woods. Don't cheap out.

      The wheels are 15x8 steelies with 33x12.50 15 tires. It's geared to 4.88

    Great video, Thinking of putting a stroker in my 2000 Sport. Your XJ looks great. What are you running for a lift and tire size?

      Thank you! I'm currently at about 5.5" of lift (give or take) with 33x12.50 15 tires. It's a Rubicon Express 4.5" superflex kit, but I added drop brackets, 1" coil spacer, and 1" shackle relocation bracket.

      It was made by a company called OR-FAB, but they have since gone out of business. They really had a nice bumper and I'm glad I could get one while they still produced it.

      I've thought about it, but I'm concerned the ECU will read too low of a temperature in the coolant and think the car should stay in open-loop and continue to dump extra fuel in the engine.

    That what engine I want to put in my YJ wangler. You still running the stock gas tank for your jeep or did you go with a bigger tank?

      Still running the stock fuel tank, although I be thought about doing a ZJ tank since they are 5 gallons larger. I love the YJ, my nephew has one he's been building 👍

    I don't understand how you could be happy having 230deg as an acceptable temp. Heat is the death of any mechanical item and when a design temperature is around 205 or so 230 is off the hook. I have an old 97 Ranger 3.0 I was told they all run hot? After monitoring the under hood temp I decided the incoming air didn't have an escape so Installed strategically placed vents in the hood and fenders, the underwood temp dropped 15deg. The hot air couldn't escape fast enough .

    I have a 98 xj classic, I run an electric fan and my manual fan is hooked direct. No more fan clutch. It does not go over 210

      How did you hooked your manual fan directly? I've been looking for a fan spacer that fits my 1991 jeep so I can delete the clutch and I can't find any.

      @@cleanEG Thanks for the update. Ended up getting Golen stroker and installed it with my buddies in 2 days along with Moshimoto full aluminum radiator. Noticeable torque increase right at the pedal taking off and being able to overtake traffic at highway speed with 5 inch lift and 33s on my XJ.
      Made XJ feels much newer now. We will see how it does next few years.

      Doh! I knew I would forget to mention something in the video :) I'm not sure how plugged it was because it was also used in my old engine. But nevertheless, my heat gun did show that temperatures across the radiator were not consistent and every time I flushed it, there would be small amounts of metallic sludge attached to the magnetic drain plug. Either way, Mishimoto is a fantastic company and warrantied my radiator.

      I was gonna rag on the Mishi being junk. The larger 3 row CSF would be a solid unit and probably give you lower temps.

    That's the best thing you can do with electric fans you can go with spal or Malibu fans and you give more cooling sistem with 3 row aluminum radiator that's I have to do and I live in ARIZONA and my don't go over the 210 degrees with the a/c on even on the hottest days

    You never mentioned your trans cooler. The AW4 runs hot. Try a big cooler and skip running it thru the radiator.

      As it turns out, I forgot to mention that as well! Yes, one of the first things I did to Jeep 5 years ago is add a trans cooler and bypass the radiator. Since I don't live in a cold climate I could get away with it. Thanks for bringing that up, because it really helps👍

      Here's a short summary of the parts. Russ Pottenger put together the kit for me, so give him a call if you are interested. Fully ported head, new valve springs, LS valves, machined block, new scat crank, micro-polished and balanced assembly, racetec pistons, new rods, wrist pins, comp cam nitrided (custom grind) ported intake manifold, ported throttle body, bosch 24lb injectors, OEM ecu with no tune (still factory). That's the core of it all, excluding the banks torque tube header, new water pump, oil pump, harmonic balancer, timing chain, etc.

    Do away with the fan and clutch and do duel hayden electric fans with an aluminum radiator. You can maintain 190 no sweat.

      I have a B&M trans cooler and I'm actually thinking of doing a remote one with an electric fan just to reduce any heat in front of the radiator/condensor.

    Run 3 fans ,problem solved.......2 on a switch and one on the oem fan relay...my jeep runs so much cooler..
