Gerry Brownlee Ruling: Disrespectful Maori MPs

  • New Zealand 29 May 2024:
Te Pāti Māori rarely show any respect in parliament, especially Rawiri Waititi, the pretend European Maori.
Listen to the speaker’s ruling regarding yesterday’s disgraceful behaviour by Rawiri Waititi and Debbie Anne Ngarewa-Packer, another pretend European Maori.
    Parliament is not a marae!
    Thank you Gerry Brownlee,
    WhangareiTim

Rawiri Waititi should learn to remove his hat whilst indoors - that, in my culture, is incredible disrespect.
Shane Jones makes a good point and Willy Jackson doesn't disappoint with some utterly contemptuous commentary.
Marama Davidson finishes with fine piece of tortured logic trying to claim that the Speaker is responsible for the lack of order. Clearly Marama has not yet developed full understanding of objective reality, the nature of events and causality.

It is very much a Parliament and a 'House of Representatives' and therefore official languages are often used within it. New Zealand has three official languages: English, Maori (from 1987) and New Zealand Sign Language (from 2006). As Parliament is 'The House of Representatives' it is not at all an issue of 'arrogance' to speak a language of those a Member of Parliament is there to represent. Some will speak in the language, or even other official languages, of those who put them in to Parliament from the outset. It is an enduring element of New Zealand democracy that Maori and English have been spoke within Parliament in New Zealand since 1868. New Zealand parliament is about governance of the people by the people. Simultaneous language interpretation occurs as part of standard practice within Parliament, so any and all of the Members of Parliament have access to understanding at any time what is spoken. Those in the Parliamentary Gallery can request a receiver and earpiece also. Should anyone other than a Member Of Parliament or Gallery observer listen in and watch parliamentary proceedings occur and not understand themselves one of the official languages being used, they can rest assured that ALL of New Zealand's House of Representative MP's and those in the actual House of Representatives at the time do have continual simultaneously interpretation available to them. The process of using an official language is legal and a good one to operate within Parliament, in order to honour the democratic structure and system of Governance for New Zealand. You can learn both English, Te Reo and Sign Language via many local community groups and their classes. Doing so may well prove to be the very key to help resolve any personal frustration over not knowing official languages that others themselves in fact know and fluidly engage in.

A couple of Māori words and a whinge does nothing to heal. I rather suspect that some of the Māori we have in our current parliament, especially those from the Green Party, the Māori Party and the Labour Left, have neither pride in themselves or pride in the way they present to the Nation. Neither do they seemingly have any desire whatsoever to be judged by history as anything other than disruptive and childish in the way they conduct themselves within the Parliament. It is sad to think that people such as these are the best that Māori can offer for the serious business of governing our Nation.

A Komatua can be interrupted midway through his waiata by the Assistant Speaker, but a Minister is allowed to cross the floor, wave her hands around aggressively & shout at a another colleague, & people watching smile & think it's funny. The bias is quite clear. The Assistant Speaker needs guidance in the protocol of Te Maori ways & an apology should have been forthcoming.
