    I can relate. I’ve used prismacolor for years and love them. I buy open stock from an art store and the last batch I bought were terrible. I talked to the art supply store and they told me the quality has gone down. I honestly don’t believe the quality has gone down this drastically from the last time I purchased a couple of months ago. I think my art store is selling fakes, whether they know it or not. I’ve ordered my next batch from a new art store so we will see if they are different. Hard to trust the places we are buying these from considering all the people making counterfeit products these days.

    I live in Mexico City, I believe the Prismacolor factory is only a few kilometers away from my house. Mexico City is not cheap to have a factory, real estate prices are much higher than in any other part of the country. Labor is cheaper, I’ll agree to that. However, if the quality has decreased is the company’a philosophy and not the country.
    I do plan to visit them as soon as the pandemic is really over, I’m sure they have a factory store 🤣 with discounted prices.
    The “sale” price you get in the US is the regular price I get here in Mexico, however, ALL other art supplies/colored pencils are at least 3x the price of what people pay in the US, if they are available at all!
    I bought my 1st 150 set of Prismas back in November from Amazon and I received a set that came with duplicate blues and no purples, Amazon replaced it and even gave me a discount. Please note that I purchased directly from the Prismacolor official Amazon store.
    I have not had any problems with breakage, I use a Dahle 133 sharpener which after a few months of using it, malfunctioned and then I started having breakage. I’m still waiting for Dahle to send a replacement, 3 months and counting…
    I no longer look for long sharp points, if you notice, when Prismacolors are new, the point is short and rounded, that should give all of us a hint! so when I need to freshen up the point I use a manual Kum sharpener or an electric Tihoo. I try to change blades frequently.
    Yes, there is wax build up if I don’t pay attention to my layering. Yes, they mush up together and smear if I am not careful, etc. but I’m thinking that’s what sets them apart from other wax pencils. I love them and I already have a backup set and a vintage Sanford set also. Oddly enough, they are not sold open stock 🤣. I’ve had to buy replacements from small indie art stores that open a 150 box and sell them individually, those have worked beautifully as well.

      They used to sharpen to a tall tip. The short tip is so they don't break in shipping. Any pencil with a tall tip can break. Andy and I decided on a short tip for safety reasons too. It's becoming a standard now.

    I, too am an avid collector of the "oldies". When I can get a box of them I like to color with them, too. Some years are so much better than the current pencils, some older pencils not so great.

    I can answer the UK question! They were Berol Karisma and they had the same core as Prismacolors but they were a really well made, good quality pencil, I never had any breakage issues with them. You can still find them on sale on ebay but they are getting rare and are expensive.

    Prismacolors have always been on the fragile side. A few of my sanfords have a bend to them much like the art stix. I think problems started ramping up from them being presharpened. It used to be a full day affair to manually sharpen a full box of prismacolors, even for a 125 count, the blisters, lol. Sharpened pencils were a nice convenience at first but, not at the expense of broken cores or split wood etc. We use to glue the end of a short pencil to a new (unsharpened) pencil and sharpen through the glue.....no stubs or waste.

  • @meticule2
    @meticule2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Over the last 6 years, I have accumulated 60+ Prismacolor Premier pencils from different/smaller sets. But I have little interest in getting the full set--not even at a discounted price. My point is I wanted to really try them out and perhaps experience the "frustration" shared by so many colorists/artists before diving in.
    Here's my opinion: for (quick) coverage, blendability and smooth lay-down, PCP is indeed good; but issues like cracked/split barrels, off-center cores and wax bloom/smudginess (sometimes only after 2-3 layers!) are real too. Besides, I think I have found my substitutes in Colleen (I tried the 60-set first and subsequently bought the 120-set) which imho are soft and creamy but not as "fragile" as PCP.

    First time visitor to your channel, I’m impressed! I have been using Prismacolor coloured pencils since I was in grade school and now, at 65, I can safely say that their quality control has totally gone by the wayside. I understand the cost of both labour (change of manufacturing location) and materials (quality of the wood used) has increased considerably but, it’s still the Prismacolor name on those pencils and this problem with the off-centered leads has been going on for years. I still love my Prismacolors (darn it!) but I’m disappointed, to say the least.
    And I believe this problem crosses over all their pencil lines! I just purchased a tin of Prismacolor Turquoise graphite pencils at my local Staples, and 5 out of the 12 had off-centered leads. They let me exchange it: the replacement set had 4 of the same AND one pencil was mis-identified (it said 2H but was darker than a 2B). Is there ANY quality control in place?
    Thanks for this great video!!!

    I dont think it is a amazon issue as much as it is where or what storefront you buy from on Amazon..even then most people don't realize how Amazon works...I used to do some selling on Amazon years ago..and the pencils you order from a specific vendor, even if you order from that vendor the product you get may not come from that vendor. (Unless of course if it's a specialty product that only one vendor sells; as a example the deli pencils by the star joy store). Amazon has multiple fulfillment centers throughout the country. So the reason they can ship so fast is they take the same product from another seller thats in the fulfillment center closest to you and send you that. It really sucks for people who sell on Amazon. Because even tho your product wasn't the one sent to the recipient and Amazon used another sellers product to get it to you fast, the original seller still has to deal with any problems (and also possible negative reviews) that came from the product the customer received that wasn't even there product. Whether it be damaged, defective, or whatever. What I would do is contact the seller and have them ship out a new set of pencils. That would be the easiest way to deal with this situation. I don't use a electric sharpener. I found the tigal sharpener which has 5 settings on it and it is the best manual sharpener ever for prismas on the number one setting. And I tried every manual sharpener there was, even a few makeup sharpeners. Have had not one pencil break or any of the other problems people usually get with sharpening prismas. And it is so smooth too. It doesn't feel like it's even sharpening but it gets it perfect Everytime. I also use it on my delis on the number 2 or 3 setting and it works fantastic. I was at my wit's end and about to get the expensive electric sharpener but decided to try this one and I'm glad I did. It was only 3 dollars and it's the best manual sharpener ever. I have heard to only buy the pink color one tho. I will be picking up a few more on my next haul. I was worried about ordering my pencils thru Amazon too cuz I know how there system is ran but my pencils were fine fortunately. I used to have prismacolors from back when they were manufactured In Canada and yes I do notice a definite difference In quality.. it's more obvious on some of the colors them others. And obviously if you get really unlucky you might end up with factory seconds or rejects if you order from Amazon even if you buy from a established seller for the above mentioned reason on how Amazon fulfills there orders.

      Is that $3 pencil sharpener made by Kum? I have a Kum, and I paid $3.99 or so for it. It's the best little sharpener! I love it.

    • @blankmission5369
      @blankmission5369 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@carolbatchelor5855 No I was going to get the Kum but read some reviews and decided against it. It's the t gal and it has 5 separate settings on it. So you can get 5 different types of points on the pencil. For the prismas i only use setting number one. It sharpens them perfectly Everytime with no waste of core or pigment. Wasting cores and breakages and all the usual trouble with sharpening the prismas are a distant memory for me. For my delis I use setting 2 or 3. It works so beautifully everytime. Its a joy to use. The only thing I don't sharpen in it is my luminance blender pencil. The weirdest thing about it is it doesn't even feel like your sharpening the pencils when your turning it. It feels lose. But it quickly and easily sharpens the delis and prismas with just a few turns to a perfect point. If you want to try it buy the pink colored one as I heard the blue and green colored ones were defective or something like that. I can't say enough about this sharpener cause it solved all my prismacolor sharpening problems. And it's only 3 dollars so it saved me money from having to buy the electric which I was able to spend on other art supplies I wanted. You can find it on Amazon and see the different points it is capable of producing. But for the prismas setting number one is perfect. But since it's only 3 dollars I'll pick up a kum anyway just to see how they compare. Since you like it. It's hard trusting Amazon reviews nowadays.

I still have some from every Prisma manufacturer and like the Berols and Sanfords the best. They actually moved theIr manufacturing to Mexico in 2010, not the 70's. I've been using Prismacolor since my days as a student at Pratt; they're my favorite, hands down. But the dip in quality in the 10' and teens was horrible. I did recently buy a full set and had zero problems with it, though. I actually addressed it in my blog because there's a lot of negative feedback about these pencils, and I wanted to give another take on them (not that anybody actually reads blogs anymore, lol). Newell Brands listens to their customers, and I do think they've been addressing the issues. The problem lies in sellers on places like Amazon selling old stock; while newer sets may have better quality, the set I purchase on Amazon could have been sitting in the seller's inventory for a year. That's why I try not to buy premium pencils anywhere other than actual art supply stores. If I DO buy from Amazon, I make sure the seller is Newell.

      Companies often send youtubers free stuff to review on their channels because it helps their sales if the reviews are positive. That being said, most of the youtubers I've watched (including Lori) do give their honest opinions and will not recommend products if they feel the quality is not good or not worth the prices the companies charge for the products. That being said, not ALL youtubers do get free stuff and I know several who refuse a lot of the free stuff they're offered, especially if the company pressures them to give positive reviews. Lori has mentioned this in her videos and I must say I really respect people who are honest, whether they think a product is good or bad. Some also get a little kickback from Amazon and other retailers when their viewers use their referral links to order, but that's not always the case either. Sometimes, the viewer/buyer gets a percentage off certain products they order using referral links and promo codes that the companies provide for content creators.
      BUT most all youtubers spend a lot of their own money out of pocket to buy products to review and share with their viewers. They're not getting everything free. I just wanted to clarify that because there are people who seem to think that they get everything free and that being a youtuber is all fun and games and free stuff. I'm not making any assumptions here. Just wanted to clarify.

      I will agree and disagree with this. It's the company's fault now. They provide the materials and the plant only does what's it's instructed to do, but back when the quality issues started there was a clear difference in the pencils. Those made in Canada were far more superior than those made in the USA and Mexico. All you have to do is get a hold of a Canadian Berol and you can see the difference easily. Now they don't make them in Canada anymore. It's only the USA and Mexico. They both seem to have equal quality issues so that makes it the company not the country. So while Prismacolor is a great pencil they aren't what they used to be. I will still use them and enjoy them. I enjoy the price too after having bought a 300 dollar 72 set in the past.

    So, I noticed a trend with Prismas. I had bought some sets on Amazon, and had issues with them. I bought sets from Blick, and open stock, and those ones don't have the issues (so not sure what's up with that). I've especially noticed it with the Amazon sets that are under $100. I've stopped buying them from Amazon and just buy from Blick. Prisma is my most favorite pencil, so it sucks that these manufacturing flaws are really killing their brand and making others push away. I'm so devoted though, I keep going back lol. But yes, their quality has suffered over the years.

      I would start with the prismas. If she buys them in store there shouldn't be any problems. Or she could buy open stock and see what she likes best. Alot of people are used to wax based pencils and oil based pencils have a learning curve to them. And she can always return them if she gets a bad batch. But I would go with the prismas. Unless she has money to waste on polys. I'm intermediate level and I would never buy the polys based just on price alone. There not worth it. Not when you can get the delis for 30 dollars. Or as a alternative by a smaller pack of the polys and make a color mixing chart so you can create 100s to even thousands of colors from just a small set of the poly pencils. But in store i doubt she will get a bad batch. The chances are slim. Stop scaring people away from buying prismas. They are still a great pencil. Even if they are no longer manufactured in Canada they still are awesome pencils. And you can't blend polys the same way as prismas. Two different kinds of pencils entirely.

      My luminance doesn't have paint on it at all, but sort of like a clear coat over the wood. It doesn't seem that Faber Castell has a quality problem at all or at least nobody talks about it. Prismacolor used to be very expensive. I remember paying 300.00 for a 72 set back in the day. They cut corners and one was to decrease the quality of paint and get rid of the base. Probably to be able to lower the price. This is why people are finding the paint inside staining the wood. The good thing is it isn't going to effect the art in anyway. It's just ugly.

      I was very sad about this video myself but Dianne is not someone who cries foul every day. I always knew the older Prismas were the better quality ones, but until you put them up against each other it's hard to judge it. With that said, they aren't bad enough for me to stop using them. I love the feel and ease of blending. That hasn't changed. I am guessing to make up for the lowering of price they had to cut something out. The mind blowing thing is what they took away (primer) would solve the paint issues. The barrels would look so much nicer. As for the cores being lower quality, I haven't seen that. Every set I own has a pencil or two that may be off slightly. The Prisma company is willing to exchange bad pencils so that is good. Using them or not is a personal decision. They are going to lose their professional reputation but I guess they make more money being a budget pencil.

As for pencil sharpening issues either get the sharpener Lori recommends or the t gal with 5 different settings. This one is manual and cheap and you have to get the pink one. I've tried so many sharpeners for my prismas, even trying make up pencil sharpeners. I was about to get Lori's sharpener but decided to try the tgal instead and I'm very glad I did. Problems sharpening the prismas are now a ancient memory for me. Oh and buying open stock isn't the answer cause alot of stores only carry a certain amount..at my store they only sell 30 open stock pencils. Not a great selection.
