  • The cobbled climbs of races like the Tour of Flanders are really tough! But riders like Wout van Aert, Marianne Vos, and Mathieu van der Poel all have one thing in common - they also race off road! Could this be the key to smashing these brutally steep cobbled climbs? To find out, we pitted our own king of suffering, Hank, against GMBN's Blake Samson to find out whether roadies or mountain bikers have the edge up the bergs of Bristol!

Mountain biking is basically doing intervals all day. Up a crazy steep hill, then recover flat. Over and over for hours. I honestly dont think road riders appreciate how hard it can be to ride off road, on uneven terrain, on slippery surfaces, up hills which if you stop on, you cant restart because its too steep to start again.
Mountain bikers, in my experience, tend to be the stronger more skilled riders. Its just hard to ride fast off road, and that shows in their riding. I think the endurance is where the road riders would tend to do better, just putting out lower wattage for a long long time. Sprinters vs Marathoners, basically.
Plus those big old wide bars allow for CRAZY powerful leverage. The top single speed riders traditionally ride with extra wide bars for exactly that reason...To push massive wattage through a too high gear, up steep climbs.

I think that’s more of what you see when MVDP moves onto the road. Cyclocross doesn’t really have much to do with it. That was astonishing. Blake is a downhill racer though. I had no idea they were so good at explosive power. The classics people have come from cross country. However, one look at the start of any cross country MTB race tells you everything you need to know. Most cross country MTB races are an endless loop of short, evil climbs, taken flat out, for a total of one hour or more. You could get the impression they ride the road classics for a bit of a rest.

Awesome. Now I want to see who is fastest down the hills!!! ... And then cut to the hospital waiting room.
I was getting worried when Hank was sitting on that railing, it looked like it might be a bit steep on the other side! :) Kudos to both.

that's some impressive max power there from Blake. Wasn't expecting that but it does make sense for his jumps, short bursts to gain speed.

They put in a new (glorious!) BMX track in our local "community thing" (pump track, jumps, two GIANT berms), and I've tried riding it (using a local rented bmx), but those things are just built for producing lactic acid..

I guess the results make perfect sense. I guess the good follow-up video would be about the actual advantages of mountain bikes' construction in their 'natural environment' (I think mainly about cross-country bikes) over road bikes. I guess the main advantage would be retention of a grip, hence more efficient power transfer from wheels to the ground surface, hence better cyclist's endurance (less fatigue). I guess this shows off only on the much more off-road tracks than cobblestone, and on longer rides than a relatively short climb. If you would compare both constructions' performance on the actual MTB cross-country track, would be great. :)
