The only thing I'll point out is for people to also cross-shop the RX 480 or 580 8GB in this general price range as it is a better card overall, and should be very close in price. It rather depends on your definition of "out of date". Whether it be 5%, 10%, 50% or 200% performance improvements, it makes previous products outdated. Of course, businesses love customers who like to buy their products on a regular basis. One thing is certain, nothing in the world of computing stays current for very long. They get to sell "spenders" full price products months before the price drops substantially, when they bring out a slightly faster or improved version that the same customers "must have". 😁

The main issue with the GTX 970 and cards from a similar time period is that they are very likely to lose driver support soon (within around a year from now). Granted the impact won't be immediate however this might cause issues with any game that's being actively updated (this applies to live service games especially) and it might also cause issues if you're using Windows 11 as, unlike Windows 10, it will continue to receive major updates which in the past have caused compatibility issues with older drivers. This doesn't just apply to the Nvidia 9-series of course however given the length of driver support for Kepler GPUs it's going to happen sooner rather than later.

I think second hand/older components are still a fantastic option when it comes to pc gaming. There's so much you can get away with compared to the latest and greatest. Sure some of it starts to show it's age, but the price to performance ratio is insane. You only wanna game at 1080p and have an average of 60fps? Your options are abundant. You don't even need to buy a new computer. Just get an old dell optiplex or Lenovo Thinkstation, upgrade the power supply, throw in a graphics card and ssd, and you're golden. I myself just snagged a Lenovo Thinkstation with an i7-6700 and 8 gigs of ram for $98 and an EVGA RTX 2060 KO for $150 from ebay. It pairs for a great budget experience and you can still play the latest games just fine.
Don't think you have to spend $800-$1,000 just to get into pc gaming. You can easily do it for $400 or less, especially if you're not sure you want to fully transition from console. Those fancy cases with RGB lighting are just for show and don't improve performance whatsoever.

Had a Gigabyte Windforce 970 great cards still useful now especially at that price for a quick budget build. Even more impressive when you consider it's only 4gb and after 3.5 of that is used it's a "spillover segment" of vram. Never caused me any issues but it certainly caused Nvidia a headache with the lawsuit lol.

That Last of Us benchmark, the ram usage went into the slower bus ram. If the 970 hadn't been built that way, the frames could have been higher.

bought one for my niece and a friend each for 120€ and 130€ during the GPUcolypse in 2021 when 1050TIs and 1060s were going for 200 and 300 eurons and RX 580s for 400. The special feature was the handicaped 3.5 + 0.5 GB Vram which made those 970s completely useless for miners as they needed at least 4 full GBs.
who would have thought the 970s handicapped VRAM would make them a good deal for gamers (buy side)
edit: also it seems the 970 was a bit under the radar in contrast to aformentioned cards. despite its performance being on par with 1060s and superior to 1050Tis

I combine it with an i5 10600k and 16gb of ddr4 memory. This is slightly overkill, but I bought these components back when GPUs were hard to come by and expensive (2019 or 2020..? When the 30 series were wreaking havoc). I went for these components as there was a good Amazon sale and it gave me room for future upgrades

I got one for £30 a while back must i must say the cooling design of these MSi cards are very flawed, for one the pressure on the die means the paste layer is so thin, (however the machining surface is one of the best ive seen for flatness) the stock fan curve and use for about 6 months constant causes pushout and a thermal runaway. MX-4, MX-2, ID cooling, cheap paste, i tried several throughout my temporary use of the card (disassembly is thankfully so easy.) Secondly the heatsink blows air out the back and front, not only causing hot air to influence the CPU, but the low RPM of the fans even at 100% for the sake of silence mean this card heatsoaks almost instantly and can't keep it under control after the time period mentioned. furthermore that lingering heat influences heavily on the power delivery circuitry and once aged and dusty like mine was, it suprises me these MSi TF variants are alive..credit to a well made card..just shame about the cooling. A graphite thermal pad and some tape around the resistors and a cranked fan curve in afterburner makes the most sense, they are still quiet even under 90-100% fan speed so if that was its target, it'll still archieve it. It is otherwise a good card but the sag and having these in SLi cries out for a bracket and the fixes i mentioned.
They overclock pretty decently and gain a noticeable performance but it did shorten the paste effeciency to about 4 months as it incurred a 4-5C penalty even with a mild undervolt over stock, the benefit mostly came from memory however and most noticeably in forza horizon 5 the mid 30s drops in the outposts just about clinged to the low 50s, if you can get it for under £40 and don't mind a power eater then SLi (suprisingly) is a half decent option as most of my library for games up until 2016 will run even if unsupported, games like Doom 2016, Killing Floor 2, the games you'll probably be playing in the time this card released unless you're trying to carry one through until an upgrade, in which perhaps a heavier undervolt and a slight core drop followed by a memory overclock to make up the difference like i did towards the end of its use for me would likely be the best option..but now i run 2 1070s in SLi that i got for £90, each using 1 8 pin which allowed me to avoid a PSU upgrade and use the 6 pin on my Asus Phoebus sound card.
To those who say SLi is dead..i have an almost full steam library of games tested that have woken up to it and more of them are unsupported games..and the 1070 alone is still enough to squeeze past that 60fps mark at 1080p ultra..but when 2 work together i can get the same results at 4K..shame Multi GPU trends died. Drivers clearly still support it, but developers stopped once Nvidia realised it wasn't profitable enough to market SLi technology anymore and even with Nvlink fixing its flaws with bandwidth..which i haven't ran into on games, Only saw a few more titles accept the technology before it was killed off :(

Good price to performance, however, I think I'd look for a GTX 1070 for a $100 USD instead. You're getting 8GB as opposed to the 3.5GB of vram from the 970, and also about a 50% or more performance boost. But I think the biggest reason to skip the 970, and go to the 1070, is I feel that Nvidia is close to cancelling all driver support for the 900 series card, just like they did with the 700 series back in 2021!
