What the heck is an Iver Tool??

  • I've got a lot of question about the pile of brackets in my toolbox, and although I've used it quite a few times, I haven't yet used it on a job that was filmed for TH-cam. Well today that finally changed and I'm able to show how it works on an actual truck. The Iver Tool allows for much better weight distribution across your own wrecker, while also making it easier to hookup to low trucks, and also gives you a very string recovery point when needed.

It is indeed strange that this is not standardized. I watched the same system in use here in Europe, and also here there are at least 6 different systems in use, of course all different from what Casey shows here. But the idea is similar.

Wow - I honestly don't think a better or more clear explanation could be given, Casey! It's fun to see the various tools in operation, but when it's explained in a manner that is so easy to understand, it gives a whole new level of respect to not only you, but ALL of the heavy haul rescue rigs out there. I agree with you fully that if there's a tool to make a job easier or safer, that's a tool to have. Might only need it once, but that one time can be life changing.

@@CaseyLaDelle Up north of the border here we have what's called the "C train", which is like an A train double, except the converter has two pintles that hook onto the rear of your trailer and basically functions as a frame extension with a 5th wheel. The converters axle steers, but I'm able to lock it straight with an air switch to make it easy to back up (as easy as backing up multiple trailers can be, anyway 😂)

When I was towing in Europe we used a "VDZ set" its quite similar to Ivel tool.
It had ist own adapters for tow bar, lots of EU truck have a screw in tow hooks and air ride front axle + low front bumper...
It was nice to use just screw appropriately "bolt" then turn a locking nut, screw on a hook and just hook to tow bar with proprietary adapter.
+ it had its own adapter for witching out a truck.
And it wasn't less expensive than Ivel Tool.

We have lift tow adaptors that hook straight to them rather than the having the fork adaptors. So much simpler and safer system then using forks or chain adaptors

Iver (wich by the way is the name of the inventor, Iver Årvåg) is a very serious Swedish heavy wrecker company owner who build heavy wreckers to his company and to customers.
He's specialized on the really big and difficult jobs.
I know him personally and if he have built something I would without a doubt trust My life on it.

Iver tool sometimes known as a tow pin which most drivers don't keep in their trucks hoping they never need a tow. Or they have those big bumpers that are put in the tow pin spot! Great explanation Casey!

Given the speed to hook/unhook with the Iver Tool, not long before it pays for itself as time saved means more jobs! Great explanation and driving skill!

I like the way that you shrug off the ease of reversing a double pivot. Most ppl have no idea how to do 1, let alone 2 (me included, and Ive been a heavy rig operator for 40 years). I was thinking that you have 1 of the pivots locked off somehow, but I know u didnt. Nice job Casey. Just 1 hiccup was the safety chain joined to that system. If that system failed, u would have no safety backup.

I'm not an expert, but I know in Europe we have a similar system that will even steer along with the tow truck. That means they can leave the truck they're towing completely on the ground. No extra weight or height. They only need to lift up to back, because then the steering doesn't work correctly. It's very cool!

You can flat tow with this as well

    • @Timooooooooooooooo
      @Timooooooooooooooo 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

I guess that makes sense! Would you have to lock the steering in that case (as I've seen you do when towing backwards), or does the system take care of that? How do you decide whether to lift it or flat tow?

@@Timooooooooooooooo no, you leave the steering free to follow along

@@user-ix4dl1dy7q nope, nothing like this for motorhomes. But I won’t tow most of that bigger ones anyways
