How Liquid Death's Founder Started A $700 Million Water Brand | Founder Effect

  • Liquid Death founder and CEO Mike Cessario spent years figuring out how to make water cool. Now his brand is valued at $700 million. After attending the 2009 Warped Tour, Cessario realized bottled water lacked irreverent marketing like that of energy drinks. With about $1,500, he created a commercial before he had an actual can of water. It went viral and investors saw the potential. Liquid Death has raised $195 million and is on track to reach $130 million in sales by the end of 2022.

      Water does have a taste.
To say it had no taste are people who don't drink water.
The literally minerals and vitamins gives it its taste. Also these liquid deaths water taste nothing but aluminum and the paint of the can.
But I guess that's better flavor than plastic.
We drink beer in cans not plastic bottles so why not treat our water like that?

5:56 To prove that the idea was viable, Mike decided to produce a commercial for it
6:08 I came up with a commercial idea for this brand that we shot for like 1500 bucks
8:05 Mike says they’re on track to hit $130 million by the end of this year.
9:00 A big part of that growth has been fueled by appearance on the shelves// of over 60,000 retail locations
    throughout the U.S.
9:38 Our brand is all about comedy and making people laugh.

It makes so much sense that this idea was born from Warped Tour. I go to a lot of metal and hardcore shows, and remember when these first started popping up the the local venue. Looks like you're drinking a beer or an energy drink, and it doesn't feel out of place at all.

not gonna lie I didn't know anything about Liquid Death, but when I saw it I assumed it was an energy drink and did not know it was water.

This water is actually really crisp and refreshing, no cap. Would recommend it even to people who aren’t on board with the marketing style or recycling/environmental angle
Also love that most people out of the loop just assume it’s a soda, beer or energy drink. I don’t drink any of those things so it helps me fit in when I’m in certain social situations

I only drink water. This liquid death thing is nothing "special "
Fiji water and Evian are the best.

@@dewmontain123 Fiji can get a slight pass but everything else has that “processed” taste. LD is just plain water with zero taste other than it being crisp.

      Fiji is nice!
Unfortunately I NEVER liked the taste of Evian and I definitely gave it more than fair chance multiple times 🙁
But to each their own, of course! Taste preference and how distinguishing you palate is will always be a highly individual thing

My favorite is the sparkling one. It’s super refreshing and I like that carbonation is lower _(more like a beer than a soda)_ than other popular seltzer/sparkling water brands - easier on the throat and not aggressively bubbly/acidic to the point where it feels weird to drink it during physical activity

I LOVE Berry it alive. I love the design & taller can. That they also donate 10% of the profit of each can to help fight plastic pollution. I hate water & cant taste all of the harsh minerals but can drink this & like it. Thank you so much for creating this❤
