It is an utter disgrace that the 5th largest global economy is still 1) unable to produce its own jet engine and 2) is alarmingly short on aircraft 3) Operating entirely obsolete aircraft that are 50+ years old 4) Is still experiencing delay after delay and 5) Is still buying used aircraft to maintain bare minimum operability.
There are only 4 countries that have the technology to develop a turbojet engine : The members of the UN security council minus China (which has poured hundreds of billions and has poor Russian copies). GTRE has done a good job so far.

IAF can deploy the following strategy to ramp up numbers: 1. DAC approval for 97 Tejas Mk1A within this financial year (FY25). Try to get it signed by the end of FY26 (March 2027). 2. Withdraw the MRFA tender and instead go for a phased procurement process through a Government-to-Government deal. 54 Rafale F4 can be procured in the first batch. Ask Dassault to set up an MRO facility atleast because India would be home to largest fleet of Rafales outside France (36 + 54 + 26 (Navy) = 116). Their deliveries would begin 2029 onwards (& complete by 2032) if G2G deal is signed in 2026-27 (FY27). Phased procurement allows IAF to plan their procurement better and stay up-to-date with modern technologies. If required, 54-60 can be procured later... kind of follow the Su30 MKI route. 3. Go full steam ahead with development of Tejas Mk2 and AMCA. Try to get them fast tracked instead. Try to get Private companies on board for parallel production with HAL. That helps quickly ramp up numbers. If you keep harboring about MRFA, then you'll continue stalling your air strength like you have been for the past 15 yrs.
Sg, wonderful discussion with Snehesh, I would say we should do away with the mindset of 42 squadrons instead, Firstly IAF should upgrade these 30 Squadrons with additional Rafales Secondly we need full fledged 10 Drone Squadrons Thirdly we need Ballistic Missile Defence at all heights from S400 to Akash Fourthly upgrade ASAT Satellite based command Squadrons
Attack drones will be useless in a war scenario, only suicides drones will be used as a sacrificial goat to waste enemy Surface to Air missiles and attacking other low key assets, larger asset will be attack by rockets and missiles.

No body wants to accept criticism!!! Why 36 Rafale were bought instead of 126 with TOT, whether it is through direct government to government sale or proper procurement process
Buy the Gripen with full ToT and call it Tejas 2: you'll get Gallium Nitride radar tech, a superb electronic warfare suite, excellent sensors and sensor fusion tech, a network centric fighter fleet with incredibly easy maintainability and upgradabilty. TOTAL ToT is extremely important. Use the tech and the network across the entire fleet -- including the Sukhois, etc. It's what we need to catch up with current technology. I'll cost us half the money as compared to buying Rafales. And the Swedes are willing to give us full ToT and also their production line. It's a win-win-win situation.
Sweden itself has no 100% tot how will it give to you. Engines are from US, electronics are from France and Italy, the machines that build the grippen are from Germany.
@atherzaidi5871 ToT primarily means software codes, etc -- everything I wrote above we will get... Just because companies outside Sweden have worked on the Gripens doesn't mean Saab doesn't have control over the stuff. Also, do you think those companies are going to sit on their hands after all that hard work and investment? No, they made all the fancy stuff for selling... A huge order like ours would catapult all the entities that worked on the Gripen into the big league. There are plenty of reports that Saab is offering full ToT and even a production line. I'm not surprised -- our huge order will be like Christmas and Diwali coming at the same time for them... it'll be the difference between a near failure, and meteoric success. They'll give it all. They've seen how Rafale sales took off after it won the original MMRCA competition. They'll give it all.
@@arthurrod7638 business works on repeated sales, why did France not give everything with mirage? Because they wanted to sell Rafael 20 years later? Why did they not give everything with Rafael, because in 2050 they will want to sell us whatever they make after Rafael. There is no short cut here. Defence industry cannot be ahead without civilian industry getting ahead. Indian electronics industry and metallurgy /material science industries will have to work dY and night for next 2-3 decades, before India has the tech to make a 4,5 generation aircraft locally. India needs a Infosys of electronics. A Tata of metallurgy and material science and so on. And India needs to steal tech from America, Israel, France whereever it can steal. Americans would have not landed on moon without the nazi scientists it got from Germany. Ussr would have not gotten the atomic bomb without spies in Manhattan project. India needs spies in Boeing, Lockheed, Dessault etc.
@atherzaidi5871 I agree 100% that we have to be self-sufficient in all these critical technologies. I just think that we don't have the luxury of decades to do it. The main thing is that our air force is, for all intents and purposes, at half strength right now... that's a mindblowing 300+ fighter aircraft short 😳 That's insane. And that's why we need to leapfrog to high-teck immediately and we need multiple production lines... all of this will happen if we go in for the Gripen.
It’s refreshing to see someone realize the true value of selecting Gripen. Most Indians see it as competition for Tejas Mk2. I actually think it would be a catalyst as there are a lot of similar components/ LRUs that can be used on both aircraft and manufactured on large scale here in India. The decentralized operational philosophy would also bring about resilience to concentrated attacks. When done with the order for 114 aircraft, the Gripen factory could easily be converted to manufacture Tejas Mk2.
The Indian Air Force has several problems not of its own making. The biggest problem is India's almost total reliance on Soviet era aircraft that were purchased for two reasons: ideology and cost. The ideology was anti-western socialism/communism based on the Soviet system - replete with Soviet era 5-year plans, collectivism, pro-soviet propaganda, etc. Obviously Soviet aircraft were cheap as well and on par with US and UK aircraft of that era. In the early years (1960's) of this dogma, when the first Mig-21's were purchased, there were still sufficient British aircraft in the inventory (Canberras, Hunters, Gnats, etc) for there still to be parity with Pakistan's Sabres and F-104's. Today, India is saddled with almost an entire inventory of sub-standard Soviet stock, 2 squadrons of 4th generation Rafale's, 3 squadrons of 3rd generation Mirage's, 2 indigenous aircraft squadrons which are good for flight training and the rest are gas-guzzling short-range Russian aircraft, the type of which dare not enter Ukrainian airspace because they are shot down with impunity. Russia is in no position to remain India's chief supplier, no matter what the sentiments are in India, because it is on its knees. In any case its aircraft cannot compete with western aircraft. Because of India's closeness to Russia the West is disinclined to be helpful to India's needs for new weapon systems. The way I see it India has about 5 high quality squadrons and another ten squadrons that would be high-risk in a conflict. Let's face it, India is only aerially secure because the US would not allow another country to attack it.
Hello Mr. Capitalista, Nobody every stopped IAF from building its capabilities by investing in Aircraft design, maintenance and future planning. Just look at Navy how its managing itself. It learnt its lessons in the 60s itself. Instead the IAF just slept all these years and only now it has started dancing. Russian aircraft are not as deficient as you make it out to be. The Mig29 is actually superior to F16 but the IAF again slept on it and never upgraded it to its full potential. Only now with govt banning imports these aircrafts are being upgraded. Also no western aircraft dares enter Russian (or even Ukrainian) skies because they know they will be shot down, so who is superior here ? The only one superior in all of this is you with half knowledge. The real culprit is the sleeping beauties of IAF, nobody else. Even the Russians have reprimanded Indians for being lethargic. And also, it shows the deficiency in your understanding of real matters if you think US is guarding India against attacks. Nobody is, not even Russia.
@@prashanthb6521 Mig 29 is superior to F 16??? In what sense? How many Iraqi and Syrian MIG 29s have been shot down by F16s or 15s of the IAF or USAF? Just with Western backing in form of weapons and intelligence a small puny nation is humiliating a supposed super power. Get an eye wash dude.
This is what happens when you convert a *7* squadron Rafale order into a *2* squadron one, so that a corporate friend (Anil A) can collect the cost of *5* squadrons as offsets for a 51% stake in a factory set up at Nagpur by the same company. (Incidentally, he has sold his stake subsequently to the company due to bankruptcy!!). Now the IAF and the country will pay for it in terms of gaps in the nation’s security!!

It is very depressing to hear about India looking to procure Mirage 2000s as Christmas trees. We are a great and powerful nation. It speaks to the horrible mismanagement of the IAF and procurement veterans that we are in this state. This worship of the Russians must stop. Even at the time that they were being bought, everyone knew that the Su30MKIs were not up to scratch with even the F16s. The F15s and above were of course totally out of reach. If we had 15 squadrons of Mirages now, it would have been much better. The Meteor could have been integrated and rather than spending money on changing the infrastructure to suit the Su30MKI, that money could have been poured into the development of the astra missile. Chaotic mismanagement is why we are here, and this must stop. For all the Russia lovers over here, remember that in the 1962 war with China, the Russians delayed the delivery of the Mig 21s which could have turned the tide of the war. There are no friends and enemies - this is geopolitics. We should get the best technology we can get our hands on and make as much as possible by ourselves as soon as we can.

Dear Shekhar Gupta....I admire your honest analysis on IAF and interesting to note that your co-host either lives in a dream world and not knowing that there is nothing that IAF can fight with presently or in the near future...IAF would be extremely lucky to have any thing latest by 2040. you need to undersatnd that its a long process from the point of induction to training to integration with ground radar etc. And really surprised why bollywood is misleading an average indian in to believing of an air superiority which really dont exist ? Nationalism is good but taking the audience for a joy ride, well...... I think your cinema has come up with 3-4 air force movies one years time either making fun of Pakistan Air Force or carrying out, now an indian infatuation, to shoot down an F-16 !! I will come latter on the role of IAF Kashmir operations in 1947-48, for you missed out on one aspect, Mountbatten !!
The Air Chief is right. However there is a need to close this gap in reality through conversion training of IAF staff/pilots on multiple platforms to create sortie redundancy ( turnover) in existing inventory till the voids are progressively filled. Further there is a need to create maintenance facilities in multiple landing grounds for refueling and rearming to avoid denial operations. Critical mobile maintenance stations should be able to facilitate airfield operations at varied highway stretches.
Do you know the cost to buy 114 Jets? It will be $30 billion+ . That is why for the time being they went for 36. If they buy next 36 it will cost less than before since India paid for specific advancements last time which will not be recurring cost next time. I still don't know why they are not going for another 36 Jets.

We have hearing IAF are alarmingly deficient in fighters (both in numbers and serviceability) and hopelessly outnumbered by China and outmatched by PAF in quality for last 10 years. Our PM for all his efforts and verbal assurances has only procured 36 Rafales and quite inexplicably dragging his feet in procuring 114 platforms from western powers(decidedly more equipped for modern warfare). It would be highly unwise to depend on HAL only to bail out from this very difficult situation. Buying off the shelf ( from whatever available) is the only solution.
Sukhoi 30MKI are air dominance fighters. Their main role is to stop other aircrafts entering our airspace and engaging enemy aircraft in their territory, also for stoping bombers. they have powerful radars to detect far and wide, even called as min AWACS. Rafale and Mirage are ground attacking aircrafts. They have avionics designed for that. That is why in balacot india used Rafale for ground attack and Sukhois for stopping their aircrafts. Both have differnt roles. Every country operates different class and generation of aircrafts. No county has 'all top class' aircrafts.
We cannot afford to let numbers fall below 30 squadrons. India needs to swallow its pride and purchase every used Mirage 2000 on the market: UAE, France, Qatar or Greece. Upgrade them in house and maintain 5 squadrons until. IAF is very familiar with this platform and infrastructure is in place. Jaguars DARIN 3 need new engines to keep them operational without restrictions until 2035. Most importantly HAL needs to deliver Tejas Mk1A without excuses. Lease substitute engines until new GE F404 engines are available.

@@arthurrod7638 I think you've not read much since the last 18 years. I'll refresh your memory. Between 2006-10 the Gripen C/D versions was being hawked to IAF. This uses the GE-F404 engine. Even at that time there were murmurs about why this Gripen should be entertained at all, when we have Tejas. For the MRFA contract, the relatively new Gripen E/F version is being marketed. It uses GE-F414 engine, which is the same one in proposed Tejas Mk2. So, the point of 2006 remains in 2024. We don't need this, when we have Tejas. The stupid point of falling numbers was made even then. At that time Adani wanted to manufacture Gripens. They can instead manufacture Tejas to take production to 4 squads per year.
@abhishekinfra I've probably been reading about defence from when you were in liquid form 😂 Is your point that we don't need to buy 114 jets under the MRFA? Well, my point is that we absolutely do, and I've stated the reasons. I clearly stated that we'll get top-of-the-line tech and a production line too... and at half the cost, compared to buying Rafales. You're talking like the Tejas 2 if already flying. Lol. Lastly, if you think that an air force that's (for all intents and purposes) at half strength is a stupid point, then I don't want to pursue any conversation with you. Even Pakistan has more capable AE&W fleet because their military leadership understands the force multiplier nature. What a sad state of IAF!

Dear Arko,
Thank you very much for your continued support.
We have missed the bus. It will be very difficult catching up.
Agreed
IAF can deploy the following strategy to ramp up numbers:
Bjp still accusing Nehru for depleting squadron strength 😂

Sg, wonderful discussion with Snehesh, I would say we should do away with the mindset of 42 squadrons instead, Firstly IAF should upgrade these 30 Squadrons with additional Rafales
Secondly we need full fledged 10 Drone Squadrons
Thirdly we need Ballistic Missile Defence at all heights from S400 to Akash
Fourthly upgrade ASAT Satellite based command Squadrons

Defence industry cannot be ahead without civilian industry getting ahead. Indian electronics industry and metallurgy /material science industries will have to work dY and night for next 2-3 decades, before India has the tech to make a 4,5 generation aircraft locally. I actually think it would be a catalyst as there are a lot of similar components/ LRUs that can be used on both aircraft and manufactured on large scale here in India. The decentralized operational philosophy would also bring about resilience to concentrated attacks.

If India truly believes no one is attacking India because the USA is protecting India then congratulations, well done NEIC!

Since then wear and tear has further reduced their effective thrust so much so that the plane can't even land safely on a single engine.
The Mirages airframes also aren't here for long regardless of the updates as the airframes are quite old, regardless of the updates.

We should invest on making fighter engines, develop and manufacture it and then the fighter jets will keep comming
