Jeff, I appreciate the questions. Jumping on the gas doesn’t cause it. It only happens at gentle throttle openings, seemingly constant throttle. A very good question re which gears exactly, and honestly right now I am not sure. Will have to go and test!
Do you want to send an email to me on the channel address jjrichar12@gmail.com A bit easier to have a more in depth discussion. Also, are you in Australia or elsewhere?
Hi jeff , thanks for your video. I want your advice on my panamera 2011 pdk , when i put it on drive the transmission slips till 2200 rpm then it engages . When driving no problems at all. Very smooth and gears change perfectly. No codes at all. I was thinking to check the solenoids as you told us in the video. Car has 160000 miles on it. Changed oil and filter but still the same
Jeff thanks for the response. So when driving in a relatively high gear, ie 4th - 6th and rpm between about 2-3 k the rev needle moves up and down by about 200 rpm and I can hear the engine changing revs, so it’s not just an instrument thing. It’s only on part throttle ie doesn’t seem to happen when driving agressively. Car has 93,000 Kms. Their is a video of on someone else’s car, a turbo on TH-cam under pdk fluctuation
Hi Jeff, I loved your video! I'm studying the entire PDK Transmission out of curiosity and because I own a Cayman S 2011. Recently it is giving me some issues, first of all at very low speed I have a back and forth shudder (between first and second gear) while at high speeds goes very smooth as usual. I noticed when the engine is still warming up the gear shift has the revs go up a bit more than normal (like if the clutch takes longer to fully release?).. Then suddenly I started getting random "Transmission Emergency Run" error, which disappear after turning off and on the car again. Last time it didn't clear, so I had the car loaded on the truck and straight to the garage. Funny enough they told me the car is fine they just "cleared the codes". And they told me about some clutch error codes. At this point I'm tempted to order the full kit of valves and replace them myself (the garage refused to do so). I'm planning to put the car on some jack safes, slide below, open the bottom cover, and just replace the valves without further opening the transmission. (Could you recommend any video/document what should I do with the oil? ...) Is that a good idea? Do you think my reasoning makes sense with the kind of problems I noticed? It in fact could be: 1) temperature sensor 2) position sensor 3) one of the valves 4) rotation sensor But in fact the garage said I had only the error codes related to the clutch, that's why I was thinking about the number 3). Thanks again!!
You really need to find what the codes were. These will have specific reasons for the issue, and will point to the problem. Valve bodies rarely fail. They wear with time, which might be the issue here, especially if the clutch fluid hasn't been changed regularly. So my advice would be to first change the fluid, maybe a few times with a short drive between each change. This will get most of the old fluid out. Also, if the problem occurs again, ensure you find out what the codes are and then start diagnosing from there.
Hi Jeff, so we did oil change but the transmission still gave emergency run. The errors are sometimes "improbable oil flow" or "clutch could not disengage during overlap" or something like that. So we investigated the valve body, and found that some metallic valves below the solenoids of the clutches are randomly getting stuck (tried manually pressing and releasing). Therefore we are replacing the valve body now. This new garage said the previous garage put a wrong oil with too high viscosity, and that could be one of the reason bringing to this further issue.
@@nightghost87 Wrong oil in the valve body is bad. One of the reasons for valve body failures is the gear oil getting inside the cutch section. With a 987, the codes will also come with a description as the heading, as each code is actually just a category of faults that then gets a description the clarifies exactly what the issue is. Without all this detail it's very difficult to diagnose what exactly the problem might be.
Jeff, that’s some amazing investigative work you have done. Thanks for sharing. I have rpm fluctuation whilst at low rpm and constant speed, as though the clutch is slipping slightly and then re engaging. Do you have experience of this? Would you suspect it to be one of the clutch valve solenoids? I am considering a valve body replacement to ensure rectification. I have no error codes. Any thoughts appreciated.
I'd be surprised if it's anything to do with the valve body if there are no codes. If the pressures aren't correct going to the clutches, be that a valve body or solenoid issue, then codes should appear. What exactly are the symptoms? Is it just happening when crawling at idle prior when the clutch is deliberately being slipped or at other times. How many km on the car, and where is it mainly driven? In town? Lots of starting going up hills? It sounds to me much more like a clutch beginning to wear out, but need some more detail.
It does seem to improve with sport. I did a fluid change 1.5 years and about 6000 Kms ago. But even in manual when I am in a constant gear, it is there. There are quite a few people with the same problem on the internet when searching, but the only resolution I have ever heard is gearbox change from porsche, which is not very practical
If it's doing this and you jump on the gas, does it slip or hold the clutch well? Is it all gears or just even/odd? Sorry for all the questions but just trying to think logically through the symptoms to where the problem might be.
Hello i habe same problem, rpms fluctuates especially on odd gears at low throttle. If you drive car har, and push pedal it does not slip at all, what could be a problem? Solenoids?
Jeff helped and suggested some fixes for me. I changed the valve body which solved the issue for about a week and then it came back. I have since just updated the pdk software and it seems to have solved the issue. So I would certainly start with that.
Wow. That’s a very complicated component. Thanks for the explanation.
Thanks for the amazing video. Lot learned

That doesn't sound like the clutch failing symptoms I'd expect. Does it improve using sport mode? Have you done a fluid change recently?
What would be the symptoms of a bad valve body. I’m experiencing rpm blips when cruising in us city roads. 2k rpm, 40 miles an hour
