  • So about thirty minutes ago, I was sitting at my desk trying to do some work. And it was quiet. No, it was TOO quiet. I needed some ambient background noise. So I created a thing.

    For those that downloaded the script very early after I uploaded this video, I did update the script to correct an error. Before, when you played a file and then opened dmenu again to choose a new file to play, it started the new file but kept playing the old one too. I've corrected that now so when you play a file, it kills mpv if it is already playing to avoid that unwanted effect.
    UPDATE: So I ditched the idea of using mpv altogether. No need for it when we can just use ffmpeg.

    • @atemoc
      @atemoc 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Does it kill all mpv instances, or only the one that plays the ambient sounds ?
      If it does the first one, it could get quite annoying sometimes

    • @DistroTube
      @DistroTube  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It does the first one. I'm not sure why anyone would have something else playing in mpv while listening to ambient noise though. But I might address this in a future update. Not tonight though. I'm about to play some 0 A.D. and then off to bed.

    • @atemoc

      @@DistroTube I often watch streams that lack a bit of music in MPV [ and sometimes ambient sounds as well, but this is rarer ], so I usually also listen to chill music along with the streams, but, I might be the only weirdo doing that, who knows !
      I'll fix it myself for now, shouldn't be too hard, I think, and, thanks for the video and the script ! It's something so simple a lot of us didn't even think about it !

    • @DistroTube
      @DistroTube  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I swapped out mpv for ffplay which avoids any conflicts for those watching movies in mpv while wanting to listen to ambient sounds.

    I agree, and I actually miss having a noisier computer because of that. My line between sensory deprivation and sensory overload is extremely thin. The sound that my keyboard makes is pretty loud, but it's nice, so I like it. Only helps when I'm typing, though.

    I know a lot of the point of this is solving the problem with a bash script (nice work, btw!) but I wanted to bring mynoise.net to your attention. There are SO many soundscapes there, perfect loops, different ways of animating them and mixing them. (animating, meaning change the sounds over time. There's no video animation there.) Mynoise.net is my absolute goto when I need ambient stuff to block out the noise around me.

    Why in the world somebody that lives in an area that gets t-storms, hurricanes and tornadoes would want an ambient sound of t-storms is beyond my grasp. Now I could see DT having beers being opened in the background as his favorite ambient sound.

  •  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's interesting. I find ambient noise distracting. I don't think I know anyone personally who works without any sound at all, but I find that it's much easier to get into whatever I'm doing. I find that really interesting.

    The good idea is to mix different sounds with various ffplay background commands..I'll try with a new script! Actually there is a program called Blanket that already does it, but the real challenge is to do it with a bash script ;-) I've tried on different terminal windows and it works...

  • @MrLeoStief
    @MrLeoStief 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice idea! The killall approach may not be the most elegant solution, though, even if most people probably won't have other ffplay processes running. But if they do, it would kill those as well. I'd recommend using a simple .pid file stored in /var/run.

    DT , buy a fan . Most channels complain about fans and yes the ones in a server rack are VERY loud. Not what I am talking about. I sleep with the fans on, I live with the fans on, but most of all I always work with the fan on. I am a big 'fan' of the rain though, always have been. Better than nearly working in a sensory deprivation environment😣

    I work best when listening to liquid DnB with minimal or no lyrics. It's one of those genres that helps get me into a trance where I just focus and code-stuffs makes more sense to me. I'm so dependent that I keep a lightweight, opus-compressed collection [since I tend to overlook the reduced quality while working anyways] alongside my dotfiles that I can sync between any machine I work on that might not have access to a network at some point [or just reduce network traffic if even to your file server].
    Years ago I used to use mplayer to do stuff like this, but mpv is such an upgrade that I can't imagine going back to mplayer anymore (even though the only reason I even discovered mpv was because mplayer finally started giving me trouble when I needed it in termux)
    unrelated:
    mpv+ytdl is the best way to view youtube if you're easily distracted by recommended video thumbnails. If I don't want to get distracted but want a video explanation about something, I can usually get what I need with `mpv "ytdl://ytsearch5: my query"` (change 5 to whatever number of results you want, but usually I find what I need within the first 5 results though) ヽ(・∀・)ノ
