  • In this Running Shoe Review, I review The Topo Athletic ST- 4s. The Topo Athletic ST-4s are Zero Drop Shoes with a Low Stack Height and a Wide Toe Box. The Topo Athletic St-4s are super lightweight; a pair of Topo ST-4s only weighs 14.4 oz.
    People say the Topo Athletic St-4 is only good for training runs and gyms, but I ran a marathon in them. I reduced my marathon time by 35 minutes.
    For me, the Topo Athletic St-4 seem beneficial to heel strikers because they have a low stack height, so the hamstring isn't strained by
    overcompensation. For heel strikers, the higher the stack height, the greater the foot's impact.
    I'm used to running in minimalist shoes, so making a transition to these wasn't bad for me, but for runners that are not used to minimalist shoes, the transition may be slower.
    The Topo Athletic St-4 may not be for everyone, so try these out yourselves!

    I have these shoes, i love them and im running better than ever in them, just wondering if you think they could be mixed up with other shoes, because when i do a lot of more than 10 kms days together, i feel they are a bit stiff, besides im wearing them out quite quickly, do you know a similar shoe that can be a good complement to this one? Maybe for slower rides, or on the oposite, for races?

      These shoes work best for me so far, even for long distances. However, someone did comment below that the Altra Escalante Racers are good for the road. I run in Altra Superior 5's on trails, and I love them, so I attest that the Altra Brand is Superior (pun intended) ☺️. So try them out, if they don't work out, just bring them back from where you bought them.

    You should have tried the Altra Escalante Racer, its the road version of the Superior (trail shoe). 22mm stack height, lightweight and perfect for the marathon. I've never heard any connection between stack height and a sore hamstring. Don't know what thats about.

      Thanks for the tip! Maybe, I should of tried the Altra Escalante Racer, but I'm super satisfied with the Topo's for now. For me the stack height was the single variable that I changed which caused my hamstring strain go away. It's probably due to my running form--low to the ground and heel strike, not the best--so the higher the stack, the higher my feet need to go causing my hamstring to overstretch. Atleast that's my theory. Thanks for the comment and watching the vid!

      They're too narrow in the midfoot for most (Altra standard fit)

    do you know the new st-5? Is it good for running, too?

      I’ve never ran in them but from reading their specs they’re very similar to the st-4 model. You just have to be careful running in both of these as they both have minimal cushioning. I wouldn’t recommend running long distance if you’re not used to running with less cushioning and in a 0-drop shoes.

      @@carefreerunner i ran in the flyite 5 and the magnifly 4, in "normal" life i wear barefoot shoes... but i bought the st-5 more for "walking" not for running, but maybe i'll try to run shorter distances in these.. what other shoes do you use for your training?

      @dersinndeslebens9780 I just run on road in St-4s and trail with Altra Superior 6s

    How is the fit compared to Altra?

    • @carefreerunner
      @carefreerunner  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They're fairly similar, except that the Altra's have a bit more cushioning. They both have nice wide toe boxes. I mean I wear the Altra's Superior 5 on trails and the ST-4 's on road and I love them both!
