He also flipped it every which way. Both sides. If he gets this started, he is the luckiest mechanic ever!! Wow! I could not be more amazed! Unbelievable! If i could only be THIS lucky!! I am impressed?😂

a neighbor was throwing away her troy built 200,asked if i could have it she said yes. neither front wheel would roll,i was thinking it was transmission so i found a used one on ebay.it hasn't arrived yet but after watching this video i never thought about the splines being froze up. i"m going to see i can can free mine up now and i'm sure i didn't need the transmission after all. I"ll keep it as a back-up. Thanks for taking time on the close up shots on your videos.

A little bit of K-73 from the spray can would work good, also place a block of wood under the mower deck to keep it elevated. Clay

Great video, mine had the same exact problem. To add my tip; I made a simple wheel puller. Short piece of wood, lag screw in the middle for the push, 2 wood screws into the plastic wheel to hold it on. Screw the lag and it pulls off the wheel easily. Mine where absolutely seized on. Also sanded inside the bushing and greased. Working great. Thx for the vid!!!

I have seen the exact same issue, did almost the same exact repair, But I sanded inside the bushing as well and put some thermal grease on the bearing. smooth like butta.

Glad I saw your video because my Craftsman (another MTD) has a similar problem, but the wheels lock when you try to engage the self-propel. I have cleaned around the belt, but I need an entire afternoon to play with it.

Ok hope you can get it running. 👍

It runs well, and the wheels turn when not engaged.

Fixed the self-propel by removing the belt guard above the blade and placing the belt back in its groove. After reattaching a sharpened blade, the self-propelled mower engages and moves well.

Ya saved me from inestimable frustration. The wheels locked after the blade tip failed. Excess clippings got in everything. Spline shaft frozen on one side. Did your fix. It now rolls but will not drive. Turns out the belt got stretched beyond specs with all that grass in it. Took the whole thing apart several times until I saw this. Monkeyed the belt tightener to stretch the belt max and it tried to pull. New belt on the way. THANKS!!!!!

07:15 RIGHT HERE is the PROBLEM with ALL these "NEW" self propelled lawnmowers. See how much that wheel can flex? plastic Gears, metal gears, it does not matter. Both are a problem. I find this to be the issue on brands from Husqvarna which include Craftsman Poulan Pro and a few others I believe I think there's like three other brands. The OLD mower decks were SOLID things. But they were heavy. That's for sure.
But the problems that I and so many others and ME especially that since I have a Husqvarna all wheel drive mower I've noticed that the rear wheels actually been at an angle when going up a steep incline. Nothing is bent. Everything is true when not under load. But it moves far enough that it will chew the gears on the Mower transmission.
I'm going to see if I can do a permanent fix and provide a kit hopefully, so that the other million of you that have these mowers don't have the same issues. I have a BIG yard to mow but I can't fit or use a ride on mower. Heck, I'm about to get a robot mower since its electric drive does not suffer from the same issues.
Its CRAZY that with all the high prices of these self propelled models, they suffer from these problems. Some of our mowers cost a small fortune to keep running. It really is cheaper these days to just buy a new one then do any service however. I'm feeling that one right now.
Hope it helps someone else out there.

I had 2 toros that frozen up
Penetrating oil , silicone lubricant, and Grease in transmission. Got it lose. On 1 of them , the other was too far gone, I wasn’t keeping its deck so I used it for parts and got some other toro transmission going

How did you end up getting the wheel off? I tried penetrating fluid but still can't get mine off.

i pulled a mower like this out of the garbage it had one locked up wheel my plan was to just grind down the splines and use it as a regular push mower but some wd-40and marvel mystory oil let it sit about an hour and go at it with vice grips and now that wheel spins better than the rest that were fine.
the engine was torn apart i have a mower with a good engine but rotten deck so my plan was just swap the engine so i got it up on its side removed the engine and tackled the wheel got that wire wheeled sanded and painted the underside of the deck. then it started raining but atleast now i knoe what to do for the rear wheel when it stops raining and the paint fumes air out then second coat of paint and i can leave it in the sun to bake while i pull the engine off the rotted deck. in the end because of this video and two mowers i pulld out of the garbage ill have made 2 working mowers out of 3 set for the land fill

I've got a tecumseh lev-115 rear wheel drive. Qui9t propelling but pulling machine backwards cured it. What is going on with this? i need to be on top of this since I have much fire safety clearing to accomplish so hit or miss is not good enough.

  • @cherokeefiddler

Looks like your front wheels were still seized when pulling backwards. Did you sell it like that?

I Could See That You Was Going To Damage The Splined Part With Those Locking Pliers. You Should Have Removed The Drive Gear & Use The Wheel To Loosen The The Splined Part With Some Penetrating Oil. You Can See That The Drive Gear Is Worn Out & Has A Lot Of Movement On The Shaft. I would Have Used Some Never Seize On The Axle .Not a Good Repair at All, Only Half Done

Was the spline actually part of the wheel?

    • @williambest7399
      @williambest7399 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes it is. I have had several come in like this...common prob with Husqvarna...same wheel. Leaving them out in the weather, the center bushing on the wheel rusts solid to the spindle. A bugger to take off, but I clean them up and replace the wheels. I suppose with a little work, one could use epoxy to reinstall the bushing back in the wheel, but I have never tried it. It also seems the transmission is shot on this mower. Quite often there is a pin that breaks inside this style transmission. I have never been able to find a replacement pin (goes through the shaft). Easy enough to make a new one though. Oddly enough, the pin usually is laying in the bottom of the transmission cover, in 3 pieces...

Buy new wheels , that part you put the vise grips on stays inside the wheel , pulled out when you pulled wheels off

Please, dear gods, remove the spark plug wire from the spark plug first. I know: nothing bad is going to happen, there is no way you are going to spin the blade fast enough to start the engine. Please disconnect the spark plug wire from the plug first. Please. :) Please?

I have addressed this very problem several times. Usually on mowers that have sat in the weather, and rusted solid. I typically clean the spindle, and clean it up with a bit of steel wool, trying to remove the rust and that's it. I have had 3 Husqvarnas come to me with this issue this year. A bugger to remove that bushing sometimes. Twice, I had to bust it loose with a pipe wrench. Clean it up...new wheels, good to go.

This worked for me. Exactly as he did. I also sanded the inside of spline shaft, and it works well. It is not tight tolerances or sanding would not help. Lotta oil and elbow grease fixed mine. Cheers.
