Every Jew in Israel should be allowed to carry a gun. I was there in March and found out how restrictive gun ownership was. I thought how stupid this is.

I agree from over here in America where we have more guns than people in my family to use at once with every appendage. I don’t think Israelis would use them for harm but just to protect themselves. After Oct 7th I’d say it’s a must. I’d say it’s the first thing the government should do is teach them all how to use a firearm and get them all guns. But I hear Biden is making sure the citizens of Israel don’t get the guns from the US. It makes me mad. I’d pay extra taxes or just donate so the US could make sure every Jew ish adult could have a gun and training on how to use it. They are being hunted by pure evil.

This is appalling. As a former defence intelligence officer I have studied various failures. It is hard to find a parallel. Intelligence needs interpretation and is always uncertain to some degree. It is easy to see in retrospective which should have been acted on and which disregarded. But this failure is different. It is straightforward denial. I have experienced reluctance to believe reports because they are too horrible to contemplate, but surely not in a command on the border of the territory of an enemy with a track record of terror. Glick is right. these officers must be dismissed in disgrace.

When one is in charge with the of country existence , responsible for lives of thousands citizens , there is no place for denial, and contemplation, it is time to act. It is not traitorous, just a costly mistake.. there should be an enquiry to establish the facts and whether the individual making the decision is culpable or not.
Acting without contemplation is usually going off half cocked and dangerous. At the level of a general most of his time should be spent thinking, not acting.

Norman Finkelstein is a political scientist and activist who defends the Palestinian cause by criticizing Israel.

@evamarie29 When I was in Israel in the 1980s I was amazed that most of the soldiers came home for Shabbat every week, even when they were fighting in Lebanon. On Friday afternoons the buses were full of young soldiers coming home, all exhausted and fast asleep. Shabbat and YomTov (festivals) is what makes Israel unique but it's a real weakness in military terms.

Caroline - when you said that Haliva said "Hamas is deterred for five years", I immediately thought of Muhammed promising peace for Mecca for 10 years through the Treaty of al-Hudaybiya, BUT he broke the treaty after three years and attacked Mecca which was SURE they would be safe for all those 10 years and so were completely unprepared. Then, when Arafat signed the Oslo Accords and received a backlash from Arabs about it, in Arabic, he referenced the Treaty of al-Hudaybiya to remind people of what Muhammed did, as if to say, just wait, here's what we will do... and THAT is exactly what they did and have continued to do! WHEN will Haliva and the Israeli generals and so-called "intelligence" officers learn from the history that is so OBVIOUS to a simple citizen (me), but they can't see the "forest for the trees"???

Another very important factor is that the investigation needs not only to root out the incompetents that have somehow manipulated themselves to the top, but identify who selected, supported, endorsed & ratified these incompetents on their way to the top. It sounds a lot like this is a prime case of personnel not being elevated because of their competence, but who they know, who they have allied themselves with. I loved the video, Caroline. I was wondering since the day of the massacre what had happened and thought it would only be, once the war is over, that the details would come to light. I am sorry to have to say I don't believe it was due only to their negligence, or dumbness. Too many things failed and the fact that not one, but the two generals who were involved were equally useless, sounds really suspicious. They should undoubtedly be removed from their duties without any further delay, an even detained and indicted to prevent them from making any further decisions and from having access to intel info. And they should await trial under house arrest.
It's suspicious to me that these generals are still in place. I also don't understand why 6:30 an would be any different than any other time of day, do they not sleep in shifts?! Our bases in the US never sleep.

The intelligence failures are a secondary issue. The main issue is the failure to create a credible border barrier and man it with sufficient military force. To look for a model, the Berlin Wall would have been fine. DOUBLE walls with lots of minefields and frequent closely spaced guard towers - with permanent IDF presence nearby. To argue that there was no money in the budget for that - is unacceptable. If you are not willing to budget for that - you have no country. They even allowed Hamas to practice with bulldozers near the border - I suppose the idea was that they were going to use the bulldozers to build agricultural fields?

No, you don't know why the generals accepted the operational pause. In fact, I'm sure they used it to observe a lot of the comings and goings of Hamas and in the last 6 days since they started again, they have made great gains.
