I was looking forward to this and then you said soulslike...I'm so fed-up of soulslike, can we just have a fun metroidvania without putting soulslike combat for once.
Been waiting for this one for YEARS. 2 hours into it now and am in love with the melancholy world. Some publisher needs to drop some $$ on this guy to make a bigger, bolder, but just as lonely sequel.
I had been curious about this game and now I'm really hyped about it after watching this review. From the way you described it, this kind of metroidvania would be right up my alley and now Ghost Song is a must-play for me. Putting horror mechanics into a metroidvania is definitely something that catches my interest.
This is looking so good. I love the visual style it's gone for and the gameplay looks great. Even if I don't usually go for challenging combat, I think I might have to go for this, given how well it's been made and the fact that I do love a solid Metroidvania. From the sounds of the review, it's more than simply solid though, especially for being made by just one or two people at the very least. This is one of the best metroidvanias I've played in a long time, it's basically the M rated metroid we've always wanted. You can tell this game has a lot of love put in it. The dialog, the characters, gameplay, story, just about everything, the mall could have been a bit more diverse but the connection to the characters and works now than make up for that. And the mechanics, so many hidden mechanics that make the game so much fun to play, even to this day it seems like every time I start up the game I find a new mechanic I had no idea was impacting my play through. So many hidden details that you only notice by chance that can change the whole way you play the game, like how if you kill slimes at point blank range or with a melee weapon your gun gets covered in slime preventing it from overheating, or bosses that only show up under very specific circumstances, like the giant robot skull, I was so proud of my self when I finally figured out how to get it to fight me. Literally the only gripe I had about the game was the amount of backtracking I had to do, but the game makes up for that by spawning random mini bosses that only appear on certain treks and new characters to meet along the way that you find by pure chance more than makeup for the back tracking and even make you look forward to it. It's still no hollow Knight, but you can tell just as much love was put into it. I am so glad I played this game
Sounds like the perfect game pass game! Excited to check this out. Sounds like it couldbe difficult but it will be a perfect pick up and play for 20-30 minutes game
Thanks for mentioning the soulslike mechanic of losing your currency for leveling up on death. You saved me money. I like a challenge, but losing all my upgrade currency on death isn't a challenge to me, it's just annoying. Oh well, ad this to the growing list of Metroidvania games I skip because they end up utilizing soulslike and roguelike mechanics.
This game was an enjoyable experience. It's like a mix of Metroid and Ori. Pros: Mesmerizing music/soundtrack Interesting characters with backstories Beautiful backgrounds and lighting effects Cons: Wall jumping at first felt off until you get the double jumping upgrade and get used to it. The ending was underwhelming. I think they could have had some sort of a better resolution given the time we spent getting to know the crew than just saying Goodbye Blue.....( it felt abrupt ) There is a lot of backtracking but I think it adds to the sense of mystery and exploration however there were times when I felt stuck and it was frustrating. My experience overall was calming/frustrating/beautiful/challenging.:) I think everyone should at least play this game once because it has its moments.

I saw some early footage of this game way back and it was like 8 bit or 16 bit. Nothing like how it looks now. With that said I'd have been wanting to play it just as much as the final product. Anyways game is awesome so far. Hope we get a physical release which I'm confident we will.
Imo this game is not as tough as people make it out to be. It’s not easy, it will challenge you, but it’s not excruciatingly hard like a souls game or even hollow knight. I’m playing on the intended difficulty and the losing max health thing is not as punishing as i thought it would be, it takes very little currency to fix your max health and some bosses don’t take me that long to beat (not that i mean it was a walk in the park). if you haven’t played a metroidvania, then i’d say give this one a pass for now as for first time players of the genre, it can be very tough, start off by playing some of the metroid series and then come tot his if you feel inclined, you’ll see how well you’ll play transfer to this game when you plait those games.
As a person who fell in love with Hollow Knight and understood it's sheer epicness long before it was heralded as a masterpiece by everyone and their mother, I have to say: this game might even manage to surpass it for me personally. Haven't played a game this true to the style of Super Metroid EVER. Axiom Verge was nice, but Ghost Song is on a whole different level. Truly the second coming of Metroid, and so far (IMO), even better than Metroid: Dread. 10/10!
Gotta say, i played a very diffrent game compared to yours, for me it went from "hmm, this is cool" to "k this is quite tedious now", but still for a single person team, a masterpiece. I honestly just bought the game on sale to support the dev and that kind of passion.
my problem with metroidvanias is the so called exploration: I'm not exploring if I can only go 1 way due to not having the upgrade that "unlocks" the unreachable path. Exploration is not finding the only way; exploration is wandering and finding stuff. If all ways are blocked and I can only go where the dev wants me to go I'm not exploring.
I don't understand the hate for this game. I'm enjoying it more than Hollow Knight, and it picks up the pace a lot faster. The soundtrack, art style, and atmosphere are absolutely incredible. The characters have interesting dialogue and the minimal voice acting is also enjoyable. I also don't get the "enemies are bullet sponges" complaint. If you upgrade the gunpower early on and use the right modules, it immediately stops being an issue. It's a great metroidvania game IMO.

For me it was a lot easier than Hollow Knight though in terms of challenge, died only a few times at all, and it was both to that second enemy right at the start of the game who dropped the first plaster mod, and later on to that one giant arm boss with that ridiculous annoying hitbox; took me some tries to find how to actually dodge his attacks. In Hollow Knight I'm sure I died like well above 300 times. The reason behind I believe was how overpowered the mods that threw "Curious Eggs" and green/red blobs were. Eventually I stopped using them when I found more melee related suit upgrades to have some variety with the weapons. The hazard blade and that throwing wheel were nice, but again the wheel was just so overpowered again haha🙂 Don't get me wrong there was still a lot of anxiety while playing, a lot of close calls and low health scenarios. Especially considering the fact that I have a big tendency to miss crucial save points🙃. So, the first, and second time backtracking, for me were full of anxiety; the level design imp was more suited for a melee combat focused game rather than guns, many levels felt very similar to hollow knight in terms of situation, but I just had the blessing to just shoot enemies off of a far distance. One thing that I did not like about the narration was how a majority of dialogues with certain characters were just trivial useless unnecessary information. There were very good exceptions on the other hand though like how Saymund or that big hammer dude in the tunnels only gave me interesting dialogues, but many other characters were just so contrary to the minimalistic style of the game, they talked a lot, of no use for anything.
Atrociously, unresponsive, clunky, laggy controlls, many bs deaths and moves, enemies are bullet sponges . Great artstyle and maps but it doesn't matter in the end, very disappointed . Feels very unfair and annoying with punishing lack of quality of life features like forced to walk the same distance over and over for the quest without been able to pick all quest items at once.. Played every metroidvania out there since i was 12 ,now i am an old man lol ,this is the worst :/ But as always a pleasure to watch your videos 💯👌
I mean no offense to the games. I’m happy to play them. But I am so tired of pixelated games. How much do you want to bet developers of games like that say things like “we gotta go old school” or “let’s be different.” I love this game. The graphics are beautiful, Excellent combat, basic but a great story too. Might be one of my top games of 2022.
I am not a fan of punishing game mechanics it prolongs the game unnecessary. Elden Ring does it right, loosing to a boss is punish enough and you don't need to run 10 min to fight him again.
I thought the same thing too. When i gave the game a shot however, i found the max health loss is not nearly as punishing as i thought it would be. You will only lose a tiny fraction of your max health and it’s very cheap to repair if you don’t get stubborn and ignore it for a while lol. The bosses so far are a challenge yes, but definitely not to the degree of Elden Ring. Usually on my 3rd or 4th attempt i would beat the boss. There is also a lower difficulty where it removes some punishments (You’ve played elden ring so i’m assuming you are stubborn like me and you want to play how it was intended lol). Maybe give this game a shot and you’d be surprised!
@@FrozenCulo Thanks, I think I will give it a shot. I love Hollow Knight, but the long distances between benches and the bosses are very annoying and it does not add anything to the game play, only wasting your time. I hope they fix it in Silk Song.
Do people complain about the abundance of visual novel style games? Because I'd think there's more of them than rogue-style or metroidvania style games since they're so much easier to make.
