- Today we present to you the funky #Yamaha #NEOs, the all-electric scooter looking to take over the urban environment.
The commuting landscape has changed tremendously since a certain COVID-19 forced many to rethink their method of getting around town. For lots of people, #motorcycles and #scooters have become more popular than ever before, and that is something Yamaha is looking to capitalise on with the NEO's.
To test out this all-new model, we sent Sam to the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam, for a day out trying the new NEO's in its native habitat.

37km range? 30mph? So you can’t ride it nonstop at full speed for an hour. That’s gotta suck

they will need multiple batteries for this to be practical, or battery changing stations
That’s trash. My juiced hyper scrambler 2 gets 60 miles range and that’s going 25-31 mph.
I know I'll be buying something electric in the next few years. It's cool to see the different options that are emerging.
Lacks ABS sadly - big oversight IMO. Incredibly slow charging times as well. Ride for less than an hour and then recharge for eight? One can only assume they have throttled the Battery Management System for fear of fires. The battery capacity is small - 19.2Ah stated - which makes it manageable for apartment dwellers (also reduces the theft risk) but given the standard UK socket can easily supply 10A continuously, eight hours is more a trickle charge. You can recharge an EV car more quickly. The price is competitive, but we will have to see what the 2nd battery goes for - there must be a reason this is not given (like "Don't scare them off immediately")
I would suggest a ebike if you live in and work in a city cheaper to run faster to charge and you dont need tax, insurance.

Ebikes are too dangerous Problem is ebike take off powerful, Pedal hit the calf of the rider causing ebike to jump, break and grind. Should've stayed with gasoline. Scooter are safer

My Ebike , costing 890 bucks, goes 24 steady and up to 27 mph and i'm 210# , also it came with headlight and luggage rack .

My old Yamaha Neos 4 stroke did 110 km on 4,5 Liters of petrol lol
I had one with a Polini transmission, I didnt go faster than 63kmh with it. Managed to get 53km/L in warmish weather 😂 Nevertheless an awesome scooter, I've just bought a Zero SR (motorcycle) and all I can say, apart from the range (which is perfectly fine in my case) its so frickin awesome. I like this little Neo's too. I wonder how it rides, the fact that it's so quiet is so cool. My previous Yamaha MT-07 feels like a damn dinosaur next to the Zero SR, so will the Neo's 4 be in comparison to the 2022 Neo's Electric I assume!!
It comes as a dual battery 40 mile range for a few hundred more which is the one I think most people will buy. Still not great but ok for day to day around a city.

I just bought 3.8 kW LVJU Cyber for 1400€ in Thailand.
With my 90kg weight max speed is 60(sometimes 65) km/h. Range is 40km. Can go on any steep hill.
But to be fair it is still doesn’t compete with gas scooters with double the range and power.
With this e-bike I can’t take a passenger if I plan to go up the hills. But it would be okay in the flat city.
Battery is not removable though.
3 times the price and twice low on stats is still very bad :(
I was hoping that by 2023 we will have some scooters that can compete, but we don’t :(
I have a car license, and have had it for more years than I can remember so I should have grandfather rights.
What do I need to use one of these bikes, do I need to go through any courses to be allowed to use one, or can I just step on and go?
It would nice to know how to get onto an electric bike for travel to work, as public transport is dire here… a two hour commute each way, daily, for a 45 minute journey by car (on the motorway). I would have to charge before returning though… I had thought about a moped but I’d prefer electric.
You'll want to check your licence, either on the back or online, for the 'AM' category and any relevant codes/conditions next to the date. That being said, a CBT is still recommended, and is also a way to earn your AM badge if you don't already have grandfather rights.
If you have the AM category, in theory you could buy a 50cc/equivalent electric and ride away the same day - just make sure the insurance company know what category you're riding with.

Still pitiful range and charging for the money. Honda super cub full for £7 and over a hundred miles plus.

With dual battery version you could ride 15miles each way commute with this more than most people do. I still think the range should be a little better but then you need more and or bigger batteries so extra weight and less portable, so I understand the trade off with range here.
I don't know where other people drive but only being able to go 30 mph would get me killed inside 3 minutes where I live. IMO, scooters need 50 mph top speed, minimum.

@@SingleTrackMined But you're stating your opinion absent the context given in the video and which they restated. There are very much urban areas in the US where the speed this vehicle works. Someone could easily get this in the US and use it as their neighborhood vehicle. If there was a business that did deliveries within few-mile radius of their location, and it's all within a neighborhood with 25mph limits, this works. There are plenty college, industrial, commercial or retail campus where this could work, all in the US.
Now, not knowing where you are in the US, I can understand how your opinion could work in your context - there are places I wouldn't suggest riding this vehicle in the US.
There are also plenty places in the US where one could keep this under 20MPH and ride in the bike lane w/o having to get it tagged and insured as a motorcycle.

It’s a great scooter, but the range is not enough. (Or maybe just in the city) I noticed that the familiar scooter brands are expensive and the range is very limited. The Piaggo one also has a limited range as standard. (32 km) There Chinese opponents have better range and are cheaper and sometimes better!

Get toasted in summer? I love riding in summer much more than sitting in a metal box. (Winter can be shit though, especially snow and ice, not going to argue that one 😁)

For the record, it wasn’t really the upside down, although watching her get the scooter into the ball pit of that’s play area was very funny!
