Important talking point: Making sure people have sick leave does not just benefit the workers and their families. This forces people with contagious diseases to go to work and spread the illness to coworkers and the rest of the population. This effects everyone.

We were deemed essential during COIVD and the companies offered us no PPE beyond watered-down hand sanitizer. If you got covid they'd pull you out of service for weeks but only pay you for 4 days, which you had to fight tooth and nail for and receive months later. If a world wide pandemic doesn't convince the goverment or carriers we need sick leave then a strike would, but the former took that right away from us with no hesitation.

I've been a rail worker for well over a decade and never once before did I think we ever had a chance at having some normalcy in our lives. I actually believed taking our dispute to a government level was going to work out for us, if Joe Biden was as pro-worker as he claimed to be surely his PEB would draft an offer that at least gave us 3-5 sick days a year (which as minuscule as that sounds to most, would've been like changing for us). Turns out I couldn't have been more wrong. What an absolute kick to beans. It's bad enough the PEB didn't side with the workers and 100% backed the carriers, but the fact the president, congress, and senate had absolutely no problem taking away our right to strike in an instant shows exactly who they care about making happy, and it's not us. What a devastating end to a tragic story.

I think the deal should have been more favorable to workers, especially on scheduling and leave, but the idea that Biden sided "100%" with the companies is just BS.
8 of the 12 unions involved, including the biggest, approved the deal. If there had been a single vote where every worker's vote counted the same, it almost certainly would have been approved. The deal has a lot of good in it.
We need to keep fighting for better, but this is way more of a win than a loss.
On taking away the right to strike, yeah Congress did that. But with damn good reason. The strike would have hurt so many folks, especially people who are already on the edge. However, when Congress does that, they should force a deal which reflects what the workers would have gotten if they had gone on strike. It should be a better deal for workers than the one which was on the table. That's just being fair.

    • @jason00121

My story: My mother was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer in 2019. She was a state social worker for adult protective service. She never married she only had 1 child (me). I got FMLA (unpaid sick days)to take care of my mother. I work for the RR. No sick leave, no PL days. I have earned 3 weeks of vacation because of my years of service put in. My mother was terminal and she at the end of her treatment. This is during the no visitation in hospitals. She asked me to come home out of state (8hrs away) to take her to her radiation of her brain appointments. So I talked to my Supervisor and I left 2 days later.
My job was protected by me having FMLA, what my Class 1 company did was force me to use my paid vacation leave. While I was on FMLA days off.
I didn’t have the option to take leave without pay on FMLA days. So couldn’t span out my vacation leave to take care of her longer.
A week taking her to Radiation and driving a day there and a day back. I asked my Aunts and Uncles to come stay with her.
She rapidly declined 2 weeks later.
I didn’t want her dying in a hospital alone. So I opted for hospice care at home.
I drove back and took care of my mom. Took over all care. She couldn’t even hold a spoon. My 8 days of vacation was taken from me quickly. My Aunts and Uncles and Cousins all came to stay to help.
    She passed away peacefully.
She rented her house. So literally the day after she passed. I got a moving truck packed her house in 2 days and drove back on the 3rd day( Those 3 days were paid funeral days) we only get 3 even if it’s out of state.
My FMLA is no longer active because it was for taking care of my mom.
I couldn’t even pick her up from the crematorium. My Uncle did for me.
I didn’t have any vacation leave left to bury my mother.
I waited 6 months later, planned her service and dinner. Marked off sick for 3 days and drove back to where she wanted her urn to be buried(at her parents feet of their grave site)
I was not going to not lay my mother to rest, celebrate her life and let her 4 siblings grieve. There were over 100 people there.
While I was feeding everyone after her service at a banquet hall at the church. I get a text from my Boss.
Corporate might put you under investigation for taking these days off.
So while burying my mom I get threatened.
If they would have not broken Federal Law by forcing me to take my paid vacation days at once for FMLA leave. I would have been able to span out my paid vacation days and had leave to bury my mother.
If I would have had some paid sick days it would have helped a lot.
I had no time to grieve my mother. It was work to get her things packed up, drive 8hrs, put them in storage and go back the next day to work.
We needed sick leave and Biden pushed for them to vote against ratification.
They decided in one day that we didn’t deserve a few paid sick days.
Well then they don’t deserve sick leave or PTO days. No Holiday pay (We don’t get it and we are away from our families on holidays)
Democrats and Republicans don’t care about us. We are not human to them. We are expendable. Work the slaves! So we can pay taxes and they have our hard earned money to make themselves richer through money laundering, arms deals, Wall Street deals. Make them richer and make their family and friends wealthy.
Here’s the only justice that I get from all this. God only gives them a certain amount of years to live and eternity in Hell for them makes me smile.

Stock dividends are more important than the health and wellbeing of the workers that drive their dividends. I wish that their profits would call in sick and not show up on their accounts.

If you want to start taxing the 1% we need to vote in Democrats who are not looking to line their pockets like the majority of Republicans appear do. We need voting funding reform. We The People have been too complacent for too long and we are close to losing our democracy because of it. Make yourself known to your State officials now…they are usually the ones who want to move into the national spotlight. Follow how they vote on the local level & who they associate with, how they personally financially gain while “serving the public”, and what they achieve for the citizens of your state. Then expand that to those ‘serving The People of your state’ at the national level. Point out issues wherever you can…their websites, TH-cam sites, etc. to inform all of us. Power in Numbers, but only when based on truth and facts. We can no longer sit on the sidelines & protect and evolve the country we love, and the one so many laid down their lives to protect.

      FAIR TAXATION
      - Armed forces should be funded by a tax on individual and business capital. This is the same principle we apply to funding police and fire protection at the local level. (i.e. TAX WEALTH to fund DoD, CIA, NSA, VA, FBI, SS, Coast Guard, customs, border patrol, DEA, ATF, federal marshals, ...).
      - Personal income should only be taxed to fund the few federal services that directly benefit people. (e.g. Medicare, Dept. of Health and Human Services, CDC, ...). A personal income tax provides a way for citizens to hire other citizens to do work that benefits everyone. The personal income tax revenue should match that part of the Federal payroll (including contractors) to fund the few federal services that directly benefit people.
      - USA should tax business revenue (not profit) to the extent necessary to fund Federal business services (DoA, DoC, DoD(R&D), DoE, HUD, DoI, DoJ, DoL, USPS, DoS, DoT, ...). Federal services with identifiable customers should be funded via fees. (e.g. parks, forests, Interstate highways, ATC, NRC, FERC, ...).

    • @nevermind342
      @nevermind342 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@TroyHubbs It seems pretty obvious you’re coming to conclusions and opinions with only about half of the information and facts. Do you even know why congress decided to take a vote on the package at all? They only took it for a vote to prevent and quiet literally forcefully stop the rail workers from going on strike for a better agreement. The package Congress voted on, was already won by the workers themselves without the aid of the White House or congress, but a majority of workers decided the comprise was too lacking and wanted to continue collective bargaining so they decided to strike for a better agreement so Biden and congress wanted to, by force, make the workers accept the weaker deal and forcefully stop their democratic and human rights to organize and strike. What was my clear solution??? Let the rail workers strike and have the railroad companies agree to a better deal, if rail workers are so essential to our economy then they should be treated and compensated as such. From your comment it almost seems like you believe congress randomly decided to pass a bill for railroad workers and if it wasn’t for them they wouldn’t have got anything, just goes to show how you don’t even know what’s going on. If they kept the bills together it would’ve forced manchin to either decide to let the workers strike and slow the economy or agree to the deal with additional paid sick days included.

    • @TroyHubbs
      @TroyHubbs ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@nevermind342 I fully understand what is going on. The bill settled on an agreement the rail workers made earlier this year. I get that it wasn't the best outcome. But I'm pretty sure it also wasn't expected that all Republicans would vote NO on 7 whole days of sick leave. You think inflation is bad enough, wait until none of the freight is shipped. It was supposed to give them what they want, and prevent a strike during the holiday season. If we had a functioning congress, and Republicans didn't vote against the very people they claim to be about, then the rail workers would have gotten everything they wanted in the agreement. Almost like it was more important to "own the libs" than to help those who need it. At least the rail workers know who had their back and who didn't.

Rosetta you still don't get it. Bernie is not on the side of working people in spite of his speeches and tweets. He voted yes on a bill that forced a contract on the RR workers that they had already rejected because it didn't have paid sick leave included. Why is he blaming Manchin when it is Biden who is pushing this garbage on behalf of the railroad oligarchs.
Bernie is a willing tool of the corporate wall street democratic party. The sooner democrats across the country realize this the sooner we can abandon this betrayal party and start a party that truly represents us in word and deed.

The inside of a locomotive can is probably one of the most unsanitary spaces you can imagine. 12 hours in a box close quarters with 1 or 2 other crew members. Crews being swapped out every couple hundred miles. Windows closed in the winter and summer. Air filters are always full of soot. Porta potty 4 feet away from you with sh*t and piss sloshing around and splashing out everywhere. No hand washing stations inside or anytime that. Just some small individual packs of alcohol wipes the size of a condom that are always dried up.
I'll never forget stepping into the porta potty in the nose of the cab and my boots squishing into the pad in front of of the toilet because the pad was soaked with urine and feces that had splashed out of the toilet since they never pump those things out until they're completely overfilled and have enough complaints and then as I was walk back up to two steps to my seat my boots would leave wet nastiness on the floor.
