Hi friend! Love this video. I'm still in the middle of my server training for my restaurant and the tray has been haunting me since my first day. Dropped a drink on my first night (on me though, not the guest) and have been nervous ever since. I will definitely try this out on my next day and hopefully things go much better!
I am a trainee as hotel specialist and currently in restaurant department, there is basically no training, you just watch and they say can you please bring 10 wines to that one table? And I am like how? I have never done it in my life, deep inside I know I can't do it. Being confident doesn't work when you "DON'T KNOW HOW" to do it. Like in this video it has to he explained and then carry 3 to 4 glasses at the beginning then add more and more as you find the balance and get confident. I have bought a tray and 10 wine glasses and couple of big beer glasses and I am practicing by myself at home watching such videos. Thanks for the video 👍
It's fine! We all started like that! The thing is to learn and get better faster! This is the goal here! I bet none of you is carrying the tray this way anymore!
Damn dude! You are amazing! I spilled coffe twice on my first day of work and really lost the confidence. But i feel like i learned alot from this video and the confidence is slowly coming back! Thank you very much!
Mihailo, we all make mistakes even after many years of experience! This is nothing! I know your guest probably got burned :) and it was a terrible feeling for you but you are first day at work! Shit happen! Completely forget about it and move on! YOu will keep making mistakes, try not to make the same mistake over and over again! Learn, practice and work hard! The future is bright!
Hello Mr. Ned, I am a waiter with 8 years of experience. I have a problem from the first week of work I entered the work without any training or experience. A supervisor asked me to serve juices for a meeting of people of managers. I had to present in the beverage tray and put the first cup, then the second, then I lost balance and all the remaining cups fell off and spilled juice on my clothes. It was a very embarrassing situation, and from that day until now, I am afraid of this method.
Hi Khalid, I would say if you have made it 8 years in the business carrying trays the way you feel comfortable, you are doing great! You have no problem! Still, if you feel like something is missing and you want to improve, get on it and start trying! First take a tray home and practice. then make yourself a promise that every day at least once you will carry the tray the proper way and serve the drinks with one hand! Once a day for the first week! If after this first week, you have no accedents you go for two times a day the second week and so on! You will probably still make a mistake and drop a tray! I still do it once in a while! No big deal! We are only humans and we make mistakes! The trick is to keep your mind and your senses on the hand that carries the tray, while you are putting the glass on the table with your right hand! Your eyes are enough control over the right hand! Keep you mind on the left hand and this way you will succeed to keep your balance! Good luck, my man!
Rajip, it takes practice. I have seen people mastering the tray in 3 days and other in 3 months. It is a matter of balance but everyone at the end gets it going. So practice at home and you will be okay.
Thank you so much sir..I am going to work in hotel... first day what will happen don't know..will I able to handle the tray and other things or not.. confused...
The drink tray we carry with left hand and we serve with the right from the right side of the guest! The food tray you should carry with your stronger hand, then place the food tray on the tray jack and serve your guest: - Europe : with the right hand from the right side of the guest - USA : with the left hand from the left side of the guests Then we also have large food platters that we carry with our left hand and we serve using fork and spoon into the plate of the guests with our right hand from the LEFT SIDE of the guest! Pretty much that covers all the angles of tray carrying!
The drink tray should be carried with the laft hand and the drinks should be served with the right hand from the right side of the guest! This is the protocol!
It is not really possible! By the time you carry the first drinks, the other will go flat! Imagine you have six draft beers and you want to carry first three and then the other three....what will happen with the foam and all. But if you don't feel safe or the tray will be too heavy, you should do exactly that! Until you learn how to carry loaded tray! Good luck!

The pub I work in has tiny trays so there's no space to hold and it's hard to balance plus they load the trays then put the tickets on so we can't load our own, now I know why it's so difficult...
I always have struggle carrying the tray with fingers because i always feel paranoid the drinks will spill out, thank you so much for the tips! I wish i watched this video befored i spilled 2 cups of beer and bottle of applefruit over my customer's head :(
No worries, Ryan, we all have done something similar. If you feel more comfortable carrying the tray with your palm, just keep doing it. The fingers give you more flexability but it is not mandatory! Good luck!
You should try to move your hands as less as possible! Have you seen how a chicken holds its head steady while someone is holding it and moving it up and down :) something like that! Listen, take a tray home and practice! You will get the feeling and improve really quickly! You only need 2-3 days to become a pro. Good luck
You are welcome Oliver! We carry the drink tray in right hand with no exceptions! The food tray with plates you should carry with your strong hand but ultimately with the hand you feel more comfortable! I carry it with right hand! Some use left! In the books for example is written differently! In Austria they teach you left hand! In USA is with right hand! If you carry food platter, you have to use your left hand so you can serve the items with your right hand from the left side of the guests! I hope that was helpful! Best of luck!
It is against the code, but if you are left handed, this is natural for you. The problem is that you need to serve the drinks to the right side of the guest and doing it with left hand will make the procedure more trecherous and maybe the guest will feel uncomfortable. Plus, if you work in a fine dining restaurant, the manage will most probably insist you follow the service procedure to the point and you will need to switch hands! Better start learning to carry with left hand and with time you will get used to it.
On one of my first days as a waiter when I was 15 I put the tray with the drinks on the table. 1/3 of the tray was over the edge. So I stupidly took the drinks from the inside of the tray out first and cause the drinks to spill all over a chair. Thank god it was empty but it was pretty embarassing lol
I’m a new server, I’ve never carried trays before this job and a couple days ago I had to carry about 8 drinks on a tray, I knew I couldn’t do it but they kept telling me to try. When I pulled the jack out trying to put the tray down all the drinks just ripped over to one side, I was so embarrassed, traumatized now I don’t even wanna carry it at all. Plus the feta safe triple size the small ones 😪
Yesterday was my first day, and i carried the tray with my fingers from the first shot, and guess what happened... 1 girl from Nederland got totally wet😂😂
"The funny way" is actually what it'd recommend for the end of a big events - with hundreds of people (when at least half the people left - and there's still hundreds of glasses to be cleared after them). You can move faster & carry more - while still stable about it. The cleaning laddies - won't give a f'ck about the way you carry the glasses. Serving tho, sure - you can be as fancy about it as u like.
No doubt, Sir Rikki! Unfortunately, threre are a lot of left handed waiters and it takes time for them to learn how to carry the tray with the left and serve with the right!
Maybe something, but it could be nothing. You just need to give it a break and then start again! don't carry to heavy! You have probably pushed it too hard!
Hi G, having really small hands makes everything harder in our job but it doesn't mean you won't be able to work as efficiently as anyone else. It will just be harder for you to carry three plates in one hand or bus tables at once. Carrying tray is all about balance. That won't be such a big problem although having large hands helps keep the balance. The bottom line is that I am workinh with a lot of trainees from Asia for example and they are really tiny as well but they all learn how to perform all the service procedures well. If they can, you can too. Start practicing and do some exercise for strengthening you hand grip.

I have been working as a waitress for about two years and I can't still get the tray that way so I have to leave it on the table and serve. I practiced and all that stuff but I still don't have the right balance I can do it just if I have a small amount of drinks in it. And yeah I want to learn but it's seems just to difficult and sometimes it's an embarrassing thing. I don't know if it's the tray or not but every time I carry it in the way that you do it seems like my drinks are slipping off.... Any tips??
You have to overcome that Stockeley! This is normal stuff! If you have been really good that means you are still very good. It is mental thing not to embarass yourself but this is not embarassment. We all make mistakes. I dropped a hot plate on a Sheikh's head.
No Stafanie, it is not bad to put it on the table! Safety comes always first and if you feel that you might drop those heavy glasses it is better to put it on the table! Of course if you have a side station nearby you should use that but if not, use the table and appologize to the guests! They will understand! If your manager doesn't like it, ask him to offer you a solution and explain to him that you have done that only for the safety of the guests!
My fingers aren’t strong enough to hold it like that. And my nails are always in the way. But i do the “simple way”. Works for me! It looks cool on the fingers. But i just can’t. It hurts!

In the books for example is written differently! In Austria they teach you left hand! In USA is with right hand!
If you carry food platter, you have to use your left hand so you can serve the items with your right hand from the left side of the guests!
I hope that was helpful! Best of luck!
Thank you so much lol! The last thing I want to do is accidentally have everything tip over and make a scene in the FOH.
Well it might still happen but it happens to all of us at some point. Just appologize and move on
Hello! Is it wrong if i keep the tray in my right hand and serve with my left?
It is against the code, but if you are left handed, this is natural for you. The problem is that you need to serve the drinks to the right side of the guest and doing it with left hand will make the procedure more trecherous and maybe the guest will feel uncomfortable. Plus, if you work in a fine dining restaurant, the manage will most probably insist you follow the service procedure to the point and you will need to switch hands! Better start learning to carry with left hand and with time you will get used to it.
Lmao 3:33 is definitely me right now. I’m trying I’m trying. Such a shame now that I see you demonstrating this
It's all good! It is just a matter of time and practice!
great sir , thank you
On one of my first days as a waiter when I was 15 I put the tray with the drinks on the table. 1/3 of the tray was over the edge. So I stupidly took the drinks from the inside of the tray out first and cause the drinks to spill all over a chair. Thank god it was empty but it was pretty embarassing lol
I bet you have learned from that :)
Perfect well done ✔️
Thanks ✌️
I’m a new server, I’ve never carried trays before this job and a couple days ago I had to carry about 8 drinks on a tray, I knew I couldn’t do it but they kept telling me to try. When I pulled the jack out trying to put the tray down all the drinks just ripped over to one side, I was so embarrassed, traumatized now I don’t even wanna carry it at all. Plus the feta safe triple size the small ones 😪
Thank you,can I be one of your students?and how will i go about it
Sure man! You can! send me an email here: office@thewaitersacademy.com
4 years ago.
Me started watching today 😄
Thanks Saja! I hope you are way better now than four years ago :)
Yesterday was my first day, and i carried the tray with my fingers from the first shot, and guess what happened...
1 girl from Nederland got totally wet😂😂
Being prepared pays off, O Conner! Even in this aspect of the job :)
hahaha
I dropped a pint of beer on someone and it got them and their phone wet😖
I remember when one dude took a beer from my tray that i was balancing on one hand and he got 5 more 🤣
Thank you for the nice & neat tutorial video !
You are welcome Dima! Best of luck!
@@TheWaitersAcademy hope you success too bro 🙏
I love your videos😂
Thanks a lot
Thanks buddy
You are most welcome Danny👏.
How are you doing?
Great video
Thanks James!
Thanks..
Possible know the ways of serving food and desserts and steal safety and haijin
There are videos on all those topics on the channel.
Wow it's great video
Thanks . Good job
Thank you, Sharon, I appreciate it!
Just observed all beverages should be served with your right hand?
No doubt, Sir Rikki! Unfortunately, threre are a lot of left handed waiters and it takes time for them to learn how to carry the tray with the left and serve with the right!
Am a beginner but the problem is naturally my hand shakes
So am scared the drinks will pour...I don't know what to do
Hello Cindy 😊
Please Keep practicing you will be perfect 😊 and follow other videos too.👏
Thank you
If I’m skinny and petite size with my small hand is it possible to carry?
Yes! I worked with any kind of sizes and weight people! You will learn it and you will be fine!
Great tips very helpfull
Thanks Giyon!
My wrists hurt. What am I doing wrong?
Maybe something, but it could be nothing. You just need to give it a break and then start again! don't carry to heavy! You have probably pushed it too hard!
What if the waiter have sweaty hand?
keep washing them
Thank you!
You are welcome Tammy! Best of luck!
Now I know how to open the bottle properly. Thanks a lot, Sir!
My hands are too tiny for this I have the same hand size as a 10 year old girl is that a problem, will I be able to carry a tray??????
Hi G, having really small hands makes everything harder in our job but it doesn't mean you won't be able to work as efficiently as anyone else. It will just be harder for you to carry three plates in one hand or bus tables at once. Carrying tray is all about balance. That won't be such a big problem although having large hands helps keep the balance.
The bottom line is that I am workinh with a lot of trainees from Asia for example and they are really tiny as well but they all learn how to perform all the service procedures well.
If they can, you can too.
Start practicing and do some exercise for strengthening you hand grip.
@@TheWaitersAcademy thank you so much for taking your time to answer me, I have a job interview today for a waiter after 110 days of searching for a job, so this gave me a confidence boost
@@G123-t1g Good luck with the interview! Maybe it is too late but check this out if you still have time

Any tips??
I used to be really good, but a pint decided to fall and since then I got ptsd of the pint falling on the table
You have to overcome that Stockeley! This is normal stuff! If you have been really good that means you are still very good. It is mental thing not to embarass yourself but this is not embarassment. We all make mistakes. I dropped a hot plate on a Sheikh's head.
@@TheWaitersAcademy oft, yeah I just found a job as waiter I’m gonna start next weekend, wish me luck 🤞🏽
thank u sir
Welcome, Rawjoo
Awesome Ned😂😂
Thanks Mohammed!
What if if it’s 7 gls of 0,5L beers? Is it bad to put on the table?
No Stafanie, it is not bad to put it on the table! Safety comes always first and if you feel that you might drop those heavy glasses it is better to put it on the table! Of course if you have a side station nearby you should use that but if not, use the table and appologize to the guests! They will understand! If your manager doesn't like it, ask him to offer you a solution and explain to him that you have done that only for the safety of the guests!
😊 thank you very much for your help. 🤗
U are a genius I like ur style wish 2 be like DAT in no time
Thank you, Queen Esther! It doesn't happen just like that, but no doubt you can be even better with time and experience :)
i don’t have a tray at home...how do i practice
Take your mom cooking tray or anything with flat bottom and this kind of size.
You can also take a tray from the restaurant and train with it at home
My fingers aren’t strong enough to hold it like that. And my nails are always in the way. But i do the “simple way”. Works for me! It looks cool on the fingers. But i just can’t. It hurts!
You don't have to! Do it the way you feel most comfortable!
