    Great to see this loco in action. I have been a fan of Lima locos for years. I have about six of these Deltics, both BR Blue and Green. I always keep one 'as is' but the rest I detail in some way. Like Tri-ang and the early Hornby trains I think they need preserving as part of our hobby's history; indeed, most of my models come from this early era. Once again, great stuff!

      Good morning great to hear enjoyed the video. There are some terrific looking models produced by Lima I only have a couple myself so far! This was a massive period of change for the hobby I think when Lima started producing models like this, a fascinating period in the development of modern railways.
      Take care.

    The Lima range was announced in 1976 but it was 77 before they appeared . Typically less expensive than the then Hornby Trains , people forget how well they were received at the time because along with Mainline and Airfix it hugely expanded the number of models available to the OO modeller . 1977 was a very exciting year, the first year I acquired trains that weren’t Hornby .

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Russell, I think this must have been a worrying time for Hornby with these detailed models at very competitive prices coming into the market.

    A friend brought his Lima Deltic round to try on my garden railway, I have long gradients and newish big engines struggle with any more than 10 coaches his Celtic pulled 16 round and didn't even slow up it hadn't been run for years, we haven't made that much progress if that's anything to go by, thank you for your very interesting site, there are many great memories, unfortunately my old triang Hornby stock wheel flanges are to big for my modern track.

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Paul that sounds terrific the Deltic on your garden railway with 16 coaches. Must have a great deal fun as well. I dose seem a shame that your newer models don't perform to that degree, but ten is still quite respectable I think and your right those wheel flanges can be a problem some more than others.
      Thanks.

    In the early 1980s, I worked in a Video store in Whitechapel, London. For the Video Camera display, we had a model railway layout based on a Swiss Alps scene which was stunning, however, it had automation with reed switches and magnets attached to the underside of the locos for point switching. The loco eventually failed The problem was it was to mechanically complex and would not run for long before it jammed or tracks became dirty. I simplified it and bought the same Lima Deltic with some Mk 1 stock and ran it on a single loop. This improved reliability and captured well on VHS tape fed from a selection of 10 cameras mounted on tripod mounts. Many customers loved it as the Deltic's were very popular at that time. Traction was a problem so I glued 12x2p pieces together and with the help of double-sided pads mounted the coins onto the weight bar and it ran for very long periods. The shop closed and I wonder what happened to the Lima Deltic and my 24p?

    Thanks for your weekly video, much appreciated. My Lima Meld, bought secondhand more than 30 years ago. It came fitted with an extra steel weight 90 mm x 25 mm x 10 mm thick and weighing 427 grams in total. It is now DCC fitted with a Digitrax DZ126. Its top speed is very high but this can be tamed using DCC settings. Runs well on my layout on code 100 Peco track.

    Great to see a review of a Lima loco Oscar- I had a blue deltic and just like yours it was a brilliant runner- smooth and powerful just like the real thing....
    We were all obsessed with Deltics back in the Seventies and no trip to London would be complete without a pilgrimage to Kings Cross to worship the oil stained, throbbing monsters!!!
    The Lima model fully captured the character of the real thing and we’d detail ours by chopping off the handrails and use a pin heated on the gas stove to make holes in the nose. We’d then add staples for the new handrails, plus slices of guitar string for the air pipes!!
    The loco would then be brush painted in humbrol (sellotape to mask off the yellow ends) and rub down transfers applied of your fave loco.
    The best bit was the come- the whole loco would then be painted in Matt Black enamel but before the paint had dried we’d rub most of it off using kitchen towel- leaving the black in the grills and streaked down the noses!!
    The end result was just like the real thing (well it was to an obsessed 10 year old!!)
    Much more fun than buying the current super detailed models with bits flying off as soon as they hit the first bend!!!

    Another very enjoyable video Oscar.
    I am a big fan of Lima locos and despite their faults they are good workhorses that go on forever without bits constantly falling off.
    Whilst I don't currently have a Deltic in my collection I've had a couple over the years; one blue and one green but both sadly long gone.
    I do remember the brass wheels being the very devil to keep clean for any length of time and the weight was simply a lump of mild steel that often came with a huge burr and metal swarf inside the body too.
    I look forward to your next video!

    Superb video Oscar & Thankyou, it`s so good to see you have a Lima loco in your collection. Your model is from 1977 as I have checked the Ramsay book. Lima locomotives are fantastic, I have well over 200 and they make up around 60% of my locomotive fleet, they are so easy to service and maintain too, I`m lucky to have an endless supply of Lima spares as I bought them all up when my local model shop in Doncaster (D.C.Evans) closed down in the mid 1990`s. I find that the brass pick up that you refer to that makes contact with the axle`s usually wears out and fails before the brushes do!

    Thanks Oscar, a nice variation, I bought "Meld" early this year from my second hand supplier in Stockport, and she's a lovely machine, as you say they don't have the detail and accuracy of some of todays models but Lima captured the feel of the deltic very well, as Triang did with a lot of their diesel loco's, the Lima power units are easy enough to service and run very well if kept clean, extra pick-ups on the none powered bogie would help but as you demonstrated the Deltic looks great with a rake of maroon MK1's, thanks again

    Here's a surprising video from you, Oscar!
    We have a few Lima models in our collection. The Western, GWR railcar and GWR small Prairie are all worth a look. I have, unfortunately, found that the heavy weight can be quite destructive when the model is in the post.
    My son requested a Lima class 27 for his birthday. I managed to find a new one! (The previous owner collected, but did not run the models). The model must have been stored 30-ish years, yet ran perfectly from the box (yes I did give it a service afterwards!)
    Thank you for this morning's viewing. Excellent as always. Gord :-)

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good morning Gord, I can see how the weight could be problematic in the post! The class 27 sounds like a great find, At present I only have one other Lima model bought at about the same time the BR Black 2-6-0 Crab its missing its front steps and has been weathered and well used before my son and I picked it out at model shop.

    My Sunday morning Tri-ang fix turned out to be a Lima this week. As is often the case I do have one myself but it is in overall blue with yellow end panels. I use it to pull my rake of 7 blue and grey Mk 1's. They are a mix of Tri-ang/Tri-ang Hornby and a Lima restaurant coach. I also have a rake of 8 blue and grey Airfix Mk 2's which are quite heavy but the Deltic has no problem pulling them.A beautifully strong and fast loco. I bought it second hand in 2002 for £25.00

    An interesting tidbit about the Lima class 55s, the design work for them began when Lima was still pursuing HO scale for the English market. The decision to change to OO came about in the middle of the development of this loco with the result of that being the chassis/bogies are scaled for HO whilst the body of the loco is to OO scale.

    Not to bad for a very late 70's model - as someone has said 1979, might have been 1978 By todays standards very basic and a toy, but back then was pretty modern. Yes, the scale proportions are totally wrong but they managed to capture the 'bulkyness' of the real thing. Mechanically is is what it is, the 3-pole ringfield 'pancake' motors can be made to run very well. And yes, pick ups are one side on the trailing bogie and the opposite side to the traction tyres on the power, so points can be a little jerky at low speed.
    The wheelsets themselves were factory chemically blackened. Lima models benefit from replacing the thin wire with something thicker and a more pure conductor. The brush retaining arms are designed to be soft.
    Running benefits from equal lenght brushes and springs that exert roughly the same force. Trail and error can be needed when replacing them and bending the retainers back. I used a parallel paintbrush handle so at least was consistent then with the rolling road either press in or lift the arm out to obtain desired running. Bit like the real thing really.

    I think Lima did a good job on value for money. The detail on many of their models out done Hornby of the same age, something Hornby have picked up on with their buyout of the brand. Hornby are still producing models based on Lima tooling today though admittedly in the Railroad range. I have four Lima model all of which are DCC converted and they run better than ever, one of which is brand new old stock I got late last year. Their rolling stock is also good and have metal wheels which are very free running, the only down side is the axle length is different from the other manufacturers so wheels can't be swapped out as easily. Another minor point is the 0-6-0 steam loco's have the odd floating centre wheel set that is not connected to the con-rod meaning the wheels can go out of alignment at times.

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good morning Rob, It must have very worrying for Hornby when Lima started producing there 00 range and as you say some of these moulds have lived on with Hornby and into the Railroad range. They do seem to have been great value for money over the years.
      Thanks for the information and taking the time to watch.

    As you say Oscar unusual for your set up but a nice change , don't have Liam items myself but they were known in there day to be a good manufacturer keeping up with the modern traction as and when it appeared in real life. I know some people don't like them, but I do love the sound and torque of the Ringfields, especially the 5 poles, but even the 3 pole ringfields were impressive.
    Your model looks like it could be an 80's version, or the suppressor cap was replaced as that little .047 looks like a newer cap than used in the earlier models.

    Thanks Oscar. The Lima Deltic was a significant advance in the value performance equation at the time. Lima went from strength to strength in the OO UK marketplace from this early beginning after the "expert" advice that HO British was the way to go was ditched.
    1977 introduction I beleive. I happened to have nearby, when watching, a set of Railway Modellers from 1977. In these is the answer to when introduced. The March 1977 issue on page 92 has a revue of the newly introduced Lima Deltic priced at £8.25. On page (vi) Railmail of Watford has them already discounted to £6.99. Also has the Lima J50 at £4.99. £6.99 was also the price they had they Hornby R751 class 37 at in the same ad. The R.060 class 47 having similar power to the Deltic model was £9.75. The 37 is likely to be the older early 1960s bogie design that could give problems with melting brush holders. Simulated bumps for centre wheels too, to my annoyance in later years.
    So how many were influence by this pricing and power delivered?
    RM also saw the Lima King and OO class 33 as they noted reporting on the 1977 Toy and Hobbies Fair at Birmingham. The bigger news from the fair was the addition to the Palitoy Mainline range of Royal Scots and Class 45. Airfix had their Royal Scot and 14xx Autotank. Jouef launched into OO with a class 40 and scale length Mk 3 coaches. On review were the Airfix big prairie tanks and B set coaches. Also reviewed was the Fleischmann HO scale class 42 Warship at a substantial £34.56. Quite a flood of new models for the time.
    These Lima OO scale models also sold well in Australia as Lima had been well established here. Starting with them making, about 1971, a NSWGR 44 class soon followed by a correct re paint into a South Australia 930. A steam outline NSWGR 38 class Pacific had a large market. A bit later a VR S class and repaints to Commonwealth railways GM-12 version and NSWGR 42 class variation. The Indian Pacific passenger cars were scale models not the generic types offered by Hornby from the 1962 Transcontinental range. Some scale freight additions too. All this substantially eroded Hornby's market share here, helped by even lower Lima pricing here for both the HO and OO models. Hornby losing to those going Australian HO and also to Lima OO.
    My Lima GM-12 I also have to hand, has a similar mechanism with that bare solid wire electrical connection you asked about. Almost certainly the standard Lima design. I think Lima were clever doing things for pennies what any fool could do for pounds. The definition of an engineer. Lots of the Lima mechs are still going, but can be improved by Marklin higher quality traction tyres and arranging some extra pickup from the wheels. A small firm here offered CD motor replacements for more controllable power and refinement. I was surprised when I found they were located in the next suburb to me.

      Hi, John thanks for the information. That was quite a discount Railmail were offering. That motor bogie in the 751's and others could have been so good! and those Railway Modeller's are like time capsules. I used to get them as a child when I could, sadly all gone now with the rest of the railway I had then.
      I had no Idea that Lima had served the Australian market so well.
      Thanks again fo all the information.

      @@oscarpaisley Some of the Lima locomotives from Australia and other smaller markets like Sweden, South Africa, Belgium, Holland and Japan covered to an extent here :
      lima-modeltrain-collectors.xobor.de/f9-Locomotives-Locomotori-Locomotive-Lokomotiven.html
      However Lima made so much that many items I have seen for regular shop sale in Australia are not covered. eg Japanes Bullet trains, French TGV. My club second hand stall had mid sixties very crude Lima pass through. eg a steam 2-8-0 with just one traction tyered wheelset powered. I think to the only one connected to the cylinders.

    Lima's British Outline Ho gauge may be the route cause of some dimensional issues especially the bogie on this and the 50. The 33 appeared first in Ho and its claimed the Deltic was also planned for this scale, the Bogies on this and the 50 certainly seem closer to Ho. Meld however does give a good impression of the Deltic shape wise and as with many early Hornby a green livery often made the models appear less toy like than the self coloured blue with yellow ends. Mikes Movies has some wonderful Lima motor maintenance how to's, often fixing small faults present from production which caused the grinding running noise. The motors and maintenance do vary from model to model and he has covered many of the variations and certainly worth trying before attempting the CD motor replacement route. I believe Hornby produced a railroad version of this model along with many other ex-Lima models so perhaps not such an odd choice after all. I have the blue version of this model acquired as a swap and yet to run, but my earliest memories are of these Triang Hornby maroon mk1's in both BR and LMS branding. Thanks for sharing.

    Will you ever expand your collection to the early Hornby Thomas and friends range?

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good morning Lettuce Trains, that's an interesting question. At present my collecting interest's lie between the early 1950s to 1980. That covers the early Tri-ang Railways models the Tri-ang Hornby Period and safely into the Hornby Railway's era at about the time they started introduce paint finish's to there models across the range (plus the odd bit of Hornby Dublo, Lima, Playcraft, Jouef). The Thomas and Friends ranges began to appear in the mid to late 80s so at present they do fall outside of my period of interest. However, there was a time when I did not collect anything after 1972 as that seemed a logical point when the Tri-ang Hornby Brand name was dropped and ownership of the companies underwent complicated change's.
      So as you see I have moved the goalposts before! They may well move again! but for now 1980...
      Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.

      @oscarpaisley  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good afternoon Claire, I have covered track cleaning briefly in past. I've included a link below. I think everyone has there own preferred method. I took a great deal of care preparing the track before putting it down as this stuff is at best about 50 years old, some work is needed as most of it has had a life before. On an ongoing basis I use the track cleaning car with lighter fuel as the fluid and light targeted use of a Peco track rubber when needed. This method works well for me and wheel cleaning I think is very important.
      I think perhaps I should cover it again soon in a video.
      Thanks again for watching and taking the to comment its hugely appreciated.

    I have the exact same loco Oscar. Bought it second hand but not very old in 1977, still mint condition now. No trouble with Lima motors unlike the Hornby Ringfield motor. If you Google the head code you can find exactly where that was from and what time on the East Coast Main Line. May I ask what grease you use on the cogs?

      From a Lima collectors site a comment from a German based collector of Lima :
      As per 1983 (general catalogue):
      W = British (Hornby Style) hook & loop coupling
      M = 1/76 scale (locomotives only)
      In 1983 all models (coaches and freight wagons, too) with British couplings had a "W" behind the item number. Ohter catalogues don't show the "W" even with British couplings. Generally I like the idea to distinguish between the different couplings, as many British models were made with continental couplings for european and overseas markets.
      Lots of information but never enough to satisfy our thirst for knowledge on Model Railway topics. Lots of model from all around the world but have seen many Lima items not covered in this website :

      In answer to the question as to whether British Lima OO was sold in Europe, the following video may confirm that it was :
      th-cam.com/video/itS5gjTSaAY/w-d-xo.html
      Showing a Lima GWR King and Mk 1 coaches with European couplings for the European markets and others that prefer this coupling. I understand that certain number codes in the long model code on the boxes and in catalogues indicated the scale of the model and the type of couplings fitted.

    Hi Oscar ,, i just today received exactly the same that you have there running on your railway that i got from western australia(over 4000k's away). Its in near perfect condition and runs like a clock fpr its age.
    Ok so these were made in the late 1970s early 80's but im confused as to something i have noticed with these trains.
    I have here a few lima locos and running gear but they have the lima couplers on them yet this one i have here and the one you showed have the hornby D style couplers on them ,, do you know why this is so ? (or anyone for that matter).
    Hope you can help.

      Hi John great to hear you have one of these, I'm unsure about the couplings. I remember Lima models in the UK having a D style couplers on them as a child here in the UK, the two I own do. They made a massive range of models especially for the European markets in H0 which had different style coupler, maybe they made some of the British outline models with the European style coupling for those markets?
      Take care.

    The TH-cam channel of Chico Barra has a huge range of models shown and tested. Perhaps none as basic as the following rarely seen Lima early model :
    th-cam.com/video/MkpXN6HIdeI/w-d-xo.html
    So basic it truly makes any Tri-ang model look like a precision scale model. It does have a sort of lifting safety valve that I have never seen before though.
