Thank you for this window into the past, I was born in the late 80's so I never got to see anything as interesting and as varied as what's in this footage.
I think what I need to say has already been said by the majority of individuals who have witnessed this fantastic footage of 1970s railway history..... Bloody fantastic!!! This was my era for loco spotting, from the early 70s til the early 80s.... I live near Bristol, so Deltics were an absolute rarity and had to travel to King's Cross to see them..... I remember Colossus the class 47. And got the entire set of Westerns, also the entire set of Class 47s, the last one being at Haymarket, near Edinburgh..... Happy childhood days.... Thank you so much for posting this historic video of railway footage....
Me to..I grew up in Birmingham and the Birmingham to Bristol railway line ran just at the back of my house and towards the bottom of my garden so as a kid in the 1970s and early 80's and especially during the school summer holidays me and my mates sat on the bank all day watching the trains go by..and yes you're spot on Deltics were a rarely seen thing even on that stretch of line but tons and tons of 45 peaks 47's Duffs and by the late 70s early 80's the new HST'S..also a real treat was seeing on occasions the two 37 lickey bankers that rolled past a few times a week..really happy times
Fantastic film and takes me back. I remember when I first saw the intercity 125s and thought I was seeing the future. In fact I was, the fact GWR and Scotrail have refurbished and are using them extensively shows how much of the future they were. 45 years and they still look modern and are still doing a great job. The old BR often got a bad name but those trains were inspired. A testament to British design and engineering.
Great sequence I grew up on the ECML in the late sixties and seventies so these locos were very familiar to me. We also spent three holidays not far from the Woodhead line in the mid seventies and I would usually spend a couple of days spotting (when the weather was nice) whilst the family went off to visit a stately home. I realise the railway had to modernise but it had so much more variety and character back then despite the rundown appearance of many of the stations and infrastructure. Thanks for taking the time to post.

The 33 world have a been on a flower show special from the southern region and return and the black backed nameplate of Colossus on 47086 was a Cardifft to Spaulding flower special and return working.... fantastic footage, thoroughly enjoyed it four times in a row..... The Deltics especially as I chased them up and down the ECML from 1977-81 bagging them all except 1 & 20 which I saw in service a couple of times each and at Doncaster Works as they rusted away until 1980.....55019 was my machine with nearly 3600 miles behind her

@@12crepello (and Jon Crawford) the Intercity 125 entered service in 1976 (and it's STILL going today!).....so yea, they were pretty new in this footage. Am guessing it's from the mid to late 70's (76 or 77).
Wow! what a treasure is this. We had the EM2's in the Netherlands, I had several trips behind them. But I always considered them as odd looking machines between the French and Baldwin electrics we had which of course were wider and taller than the EM2's, I didn't know they were bought second hand from the UK as a youngster in the 1970's.
Yep...the HSTs were panned by quite a few enthusiasts for being 'boring' back in the day. However they represented a big leap performance wise over even the Deltics and damn did they look good in that livery. Especially those first class trailers.
Wonderful footage! I'm curious as to why they're all coming through Spalding. Next major junction is Sleaford where they can go onto Lincoln or head to Grantham.
Most likely with a special for the Spalding flower festival. A number of excursions came up from the southern with cromptons in the late 70’s and early 80’s as I recall.
And Happy New Year to you Bob, Not much action from this end either, We are in Lock down again, just waiting for the Jab. Looking forward to getting out with the camera in the Spring.
Diversions off the ECML between Doncaster and Peterborough via GN & GE joint between Doncaster and Spaulding the GN to Peterborough. Do they still divert that way or is it all replacement bus services these days? Lived at Woodhouse just East of Rotherwood and Gran lived at Darnall so remember the Woodhead Electrics.

Great stuff Roy- when I asked my partner what she wanted for Christmas she said ‘For Will from the Repair Shop to come round and fix the Kitchen cupboards!!!’ ...I got the message and they are all done now:-))
Those HST's must have been new; and good to see those class 76's - a rare sight on TH-cam :)
Thank you Jon, glad you enjoyed it.
They must have been very new at the time. Notice that in the very early days they had no TGS. The guards compartment was in the power car.
@@12crepello (and Jon Crawford) the Intercity 125 entered service in 1976 (and it's STILL going today!).....so yea, they were pretty new in this footage. Am guessing it's from the mid to late 70's (76 or 77).
now this is a diesel gala and the picture quality adds to the charm
Thank you Scotty.
Wow! what a treasure is this.
We had the EM2's in the Netherlands, I had several trips behind them.
But I always considered them as odd looking machines between the French and Baldwin electrics we had which of course were wider and taller than the EM2's, I didn't know they were bought second hand from the UK as a youngster in the 1970's.
Glad you enjoyed it!
How good did those inter-City 125s look lol
Yep...the HSTs were panned by quite a few enthusiasts for being 'boring' back in the day. However they represented a big leap performance wise over even the Deltics and damn did they look good in that livery. Especially those first class trailers.
Only used on East Coast Main Line and GWR I believe? Don't remember them on WCML
Wow! Best video yet! Thankyou for sharing
Wow, thanks!
Marvellous footage from the old electrics to Inter City 125s.
Thanks Pat
Wonderful footage! I'm curious as to why they're all coming through Spalding. Next major junction is Sleaford where they can go onto Lincoln or head to Grantham.
Line closure between Peterborough and Doncaster I guess.
@@markcf83 They'd be going Lincoln, Gainsborough, Donny then is my guess.
Thanks for all your trouble. The quality gives a real feel for the history.
Glad you enjoyed it
The Crompton was a surprise; how did that get there?
By travelling along the tracks being driven
Most likely with a special for the Spalding flower festival. A number of excursions came up from the southern with cromptons in the late 70’s and early 80’s as I recall.
Great film
Happy memories thanks for upload
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video & those were the days old trains which were pulled by real tractor engines!🇬🇧👏👍
One of those films that makes u cry and wonder where it all went wrong 🙄😂
Glad you enjoyed it Paul

Deltics were regulars on the London Cleethorpes turn out and back.
125s were used in and out of Cleethorpes as well
What a video brilliant Roy.

Many many thanks
great stuff much enjoyed
Glad you enjoyed it
When HST's had the old paxman engine and unmistakable whistling sound.
Sure did James.
And the stink when they applied the brakes.
Really enjoyed this thank you Roy👌
Glad you enjoyed it
Very good, must of taken you many hours, smashing sound!!
Yes, Debbie thanks, getting lots of favorite comments. X
Fantastic. Sound too!
Many thanks!
Great stuff, many thanks !!
You are welcome!
The line is still used for ECML diversions.
Listening to a Deltic is like a Spitfire on rails
I defy anyone to tell me the Deltics do not have the face of a startled robot.
Memories indeed.
Glad it brought back Memories.
Great footage
Thank you kindly
I can almost smell this! A mixture of burnt diesel, brakes and jeyes fluid.
Great vid Roy, I'm a southeast section lad being born in North Kent and the class 33 on a passenger train that far north. Was that an unusual motive power?. Thanks again for the memories. - buddy-
A class 33 would often be seen on a Special train to the "Spalding Flower Parade" held in May.
Brilliant!
Thank You.
Absolutely superb Roy! Thanks for sharing. Did you ever go and film down the joint line at places like French Drove?
No, I only took photographs back then.
Glad you enjoyed it
