Just a few days ago I was saying to my fiance' that we need more of these conversations. The masses need to be educated. We are getting married out of a community of property with no accrual. Such conversations need to happen during the dating phase as uncomfortable as it is, I grew up in a christian home with both parents and all I knew was to marry "in community of property" however the more I grow and did my research like debts, venturing in businesses and so forth I jumped off the narrow mind I grew up with and seeing.

This conversation does not end with the marriage contract (which should always protect all parties involved ,taking into account the needs & circumstances of the couple)., it also includes the subsequent drafting of wills discussion & establishing how money will be distributed in the marriage to ensure a certain degree of autonomy by each individual especially in cases where only one partner earns the income . Its such a shame that some churches see this planning as only planning for a divorce & not as a tool to protect the household against creditors, which Nozie mentioned, and protection of all dependents in instances of death.
These conversation are so necessary and important for many couples that are about to embark on the next level of their relationship, marriage. Especially young black couples because our parents, churches, elders don’t speak and some don’t know that they exist let alone those who have this negative connotation about it. I really like the differentiation that Skhu made there about separating the marriage and the contract, when he had to understand your predicament about your family home. It’s so important to be open about these things as a couple and this means opening up about your fears to one another too. No I’m moving away from my point😜 the differentiation is key because that’s exactly what civil marriage is, it written contract between two adults that are binding every assets as one well if you choose in community of property. The other option (out of community of property with or without accrual) of course is still frowned upon because couples believe whatever they’ve been told about it instead of looking at it as a protection or an option to protect your assets and his too.
