"You can buy the PDF - why would you? You don't get that new game smell." You and I can hang out, Jim. Your values are in the right place. Also, the license plate makes a lot more sense now. It's even era-appropriate. :)
Your Dave Arnesson story is so relatable! We played Curse of Strahd recently, and at the final confrontation our party confronts the evil vampire, he gives us one last chance to leave the beautiful woman with him and leave his land. We hesitated. Then we said okay. We left the maiden with him and noped the hell out of there, leaving the good folks of Borovia to their fate.
My first game group was waiting for it to come out, as we all had Melee and Wizard, and some of us even wrote rules to turn them into a 'proper' RPG. But it was delayed and Advanced D&D came out first. After spending all that money on D&D we never did use TFT much, sad to say.
It's like finding out that a beloved old friend, who died long ago, was actually just imprisoned in a far off, third world hell-hole, and have been released to return home soon!
I've posted three videos on the original FTF and through those someone pointed me here and to your channel. Great discussion of this system and I'm excited to watch your other vids, many of which dovetail with the ones that I have posted (but from a different perspective--that of the solo RPGer).
I'm 38, I started playing rpgs back when I was 14 with the Fantasy Trip. Me and my group played it for 10 years straight before we moved on to other tabletop rpgs. The Fantasy Trip is one of the best tabletop RPGs ever and I hate GURPS. I disagree that Fantasy Trip is heroic fantasy, characters take 5 minutes or less to create and can easily die in any fight. I've seen fresh new characters die from a single hit in the first fight of game night. It's not heroic, the characters are just not level based so you have more freedom in character creation. It's great, buy it.
Don't feel bad, I worked at SJ Games for two years --like, in the office-- and this is the first I've heard of it. I'm looking forward to checking it out.
Jim, I'm going to fund at the $60 level for sure. While I'm not a full-blown game slut. I have been keeping my eye out for a game just like this. Is there a download or a version I can read now so that I can get my friends in on this.
Hey Jim, any recomendations on fan rules to look out for? And do you mind sharing your own modifications for TFT? The system looks intriguing and ill probably take my group for a spin :)
Great system. We moved onto it in about 1980 when I got sick of AD&Ds messy rules and never looked back. Amazing to see it return in such a great new edition and I can't wait to play it again.
Since any character can learn a spell it is often not necessary to play a Wizard. However allways try to have a Master Physiker in the group. Lack of healing and a greater threat of char death is the big difference from D&D.
Jim, do you have a link for the compendium of unofficial rules and additions that are available? I am sure there are more than one, but you recommend consulting one as a resource. Can you (or someone else knowledgeable) point us in the right direction?
Thanks Jim. Besides the forums, my first major hit was inthelabyrinth.org/links/ which seems to offer a wealth of sites to explore, so plenty to sort through. In my "free time" you know.
Havard Blackmoor the only time I played with him was then. I had lunch with him at Historicon with Shane(Deadlands) and Don(Warworld), many years later where we talked games. How the world had changed, and how much more since then.
For the record I'm not evil. I'm just willing to play characters that are. By the way I caused the static in your video, so watch what you say buddy...
Jim Murphy -- If you don't see the static lines in your original video, then I don't know if they could be some artifacts from the TH-cam encoding procedure. As for re-uploading, I noticed that when SJ Games corrected a typo in the Kickstarter promotional video that I pointed out, the original comments on the video were lost. I don't know if there is a way to re-upload and keep old comments, but that might be a consideration since it would be nice to retain the comments people have posted so far. Also, just for your information, I have posted a link to your video on the SJ Games forums to try to get you some views. I hope you don't mind, but maybe I could delete my comment if you don't want to be mentioned there. Here's the link: forums.sjgames.com/showthread.php?t=158752
Chase Adams the master is clear of static. I have no idea how or what this is, no surprise. But I’ll look into it and see if can replace copies without losing comments.
THanks, Hum. I'm @rat_blind. I'm the GM for my group and we have a podcast coming out in a little more than a week. Because of this, I now have my first Twitter account. I'm not one of these "young whipper snappers" and I think you always give fantastic advice. The podcast comes out on August 10th and is called Weal or Woe. Check it out if you have the time. Have a good one!
I always enjoyed Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (mostly 1st edition). Fantasy trip kind of sounds like it takes a similar view on character progression. Do you think these systems are similar? IE: if one enjoys one, will they enjoy the other, or are they very different?
TFT is quite different from WHFRP...much simpler. For example WH bases characters on careers while TFT only has two simple character types, hero and wizard. There are talents (skills) however which give characters some depth.
Toby Akers we’ll Rat Catcher, I think they are very different. TFT started as simple MTM combat then evolved. Warhammer was(is) pretty cool that you advance by accumulating classes. Both are really interesting and very different in play.
Thanks! I've been watching your channel since day 1 and really enjoy the content. Especially the trips down memory lane/tangents, being a umm more matured gamer myself.
Jim Murphy , what would Matt Colville do? Why he’d “put the link below in the doobleedo”. 😂 Love your content. A good mix of subjects as well as some trips down memory lane.

I remember waiting for TFT to be released, it was my first RPG. Here I am almost 40 years later waiting for it to be released again :)

Love the old game stories. This one featuring Dave Arneson no less!
Love it, love it, love it! Played Melee, Wizard, and TFT back in the day. Will definitely jump on this.
It's like finding out that a beloved old friend, who died long ago, was actually just imprisoned in a far off, third world hell-hole, and have been released to return home soon!
and, somehow, that friend is still sane and has all limbs attached
I love the idea of playing some of the classics, I'm a proud backer, can't wait to get it
Playing at the World is a good "history of D&D" if yall can't get enough of Jim's stories like me. :)
I am always up for a great Jim Murphy story! Game on!
I'm definitely looking into this. Can't believe I haven't heard of it before.

Geek Gamers I’ll check your videos out the more the merrier
Thanks, man. I've been watching yours this morning and they're great!
GURPS is my first RPG love, so I'll probably get Fantasy Trip.
Thanks for the stories Jim! And congrats on the 6k subs!
Very informative video. I am seriously thinking about backing it.
You know, if you're wearing a badge with your alignment on it, it's really on them when they disregard it ;)

Fantasy Trip sounds alot like Symbaroum. Maybe Fantasy Trip inspired Symbaroum in many ways :o
I'll have to root through the chests I have my old games in and see if I can find my copies of melee and wizard.
The vast majority of our house rules came from TFT - for a number of different systems.
I remember the ads for the Fantasy Trip in the Analog Magazines. Blew my mind when I was ... ten?
It’s been awhile
Wonder how I missed this, back in the day. Sounds like my cup of tea.
Don't feel bad, I worked at SJ Games for two years --like, in the office-- and this is the first I've heard of it. I'm looking forward to checking it out.
You should check all the stretch goals. So to pick the level you want.

Comfy Man sorry, no idea
This sounds like the open legend system a little to me. I am interested
Will you share your custom mods with us? I would love to see your hex to grid conversion rules.
Hey Jim, any recomendations on fan rules to look out for? And do you mind sharing your own modifications for TFT? The system looks intriguing and ill probably take my group for a spin :)

Chris Rice me too
My players initially cast Mega Hex Avert. Thankfully it wore off.
Fredrick Rourk pretty interesting spell
7hex fire. Lower IQ Cost and more versatility.
Fredrick Rourk that is a mandatory spell

Evan Franke I don’t, but I thinks it’s easy to find. Plus lots of info on the SJG forum on TFT
Thanks Jim. Besides the forums, my first major hit was inthelabyrinth.org/links/ which seems to offer a wealth of sites to explore, so plenty to sort through. In my "free time" you know.
Great video! Could you please share more about your game(s) with Dave Arneson? :)
Havard Blackmoor the only time I played with him was then. I had lunch with him at Historicon with Shane(Deadlands) and Don(Warworld), many years later where we talked games. How the world had changed, and how much more since then.

Richard Miller back Dark Demon, I banish back to the underworld!
Try Mork Borg!
Does anyone else see the static from about 9:42 - 10:13
Chase Adams -- I do. Thankfully it eventually goes away.
Chase Adams what could that be?, should I reload?
Jim Murphy -- If you don't see the static lines in your original video, then I don't know if they could be some artifacts from the TH-cam encoding procedure. Steve Numerator thanks for sharing, the more the better. Much better than depending on my skill set.
Jim! I didn’t know you were making TH-cam vids.
Well hi then
So, I did get TFT . . . now just waiting for the pandemic to ease up so's I can play it.
Hey, Jim. Love your channel. What's your Twitter handle?

How about a link for FT?
robofthewest your going to make fire up the computer. I have to feed the hamsters first and light the pilot light.

Why he’d “put the link below in the doobleedo”. 😂
