Wasn't aware of Fantasy Trip before, but it seems to tick all the right boxes for me: quick battles, higher lethality, highly tactical. Thanks for the video, Jim
Bingeing your The Fantasy Trip videos. When my players come back from the covid-break I am braking ou the Melee & Wizard rules and finally going to play this.
TFT is how my brothers, our friends and I started role playing many, many years ago and I thank you for the memories your videos are bringing back. C.R. Brandon has made a vast conversion of many monsters to TFT compatible games called "The Tome of Terrors & Treasures" that is available from Lulu - 400 odd pages of things to fight and different tactics those things might use.
For each character, I sometimes roll a d6 for each one, and add the result to the base 32. An alternative is to roll as many d6 as there are characters, and then the group decides which character gets a specific one of the d6 results. Makes for a nice mix of experience levels within the starting party.
Super interesting stuff. I remember playing this in high school. Such a great game - although I was always more into the Melee than the Wizard and magic aspect.
First rate as always. Looking forward to more mambos...I love the hexagonal bases for the figs. My son and I started playing through a solo adventure this weekend. He really loves TFT.
I am play testing TFT on Roll20 and solo. I am throned between Fantasy Trip, BECMI, and a little bit of 5ed. I love something about every system there. However, as an original wargamer, TFT is quickly becoming my favorite. I love BECMI because it reminds me of my childhood and it is a complete system (Rules Cyclopedia) with many, many things. I appreciate 5ed basically for how detailed the Monster are. They did an awesome work there. I also have DFRPG, which is based on GURPS (never managed to try it out). Anyway, I love your video as it gets the main point. TFT is extremely deadly and it rewards competent tactical combat players, which is something D&D lacks. Also, TFT and GURPS are sort of realistic in their own way (pole weapons ruled in combat) . I love your videos!
I really like the changes from the Old TFT. The biggest improvements (in My Humble Opinion) are: -- Talents and spells no longer use up your memory, you can have as many as you want (buy with XP). -- You can now become Expert or a Master with your weapons. This gives fighters serious ways to improve in the elder game. -- Wishes in the Old TFT were super cool, but VERY hard to get. In the Designers Edition, you can get Lesser Wishes much more easily. Nice video, and glad to see this game getting some love on your channel. Warm regards, Rick.
One of your previous videos talking about putting dungeons on index cards inspired me to start writing down D&D ideas. I initially was going to use actual index cards, but discovered I had some unused memo pads in my supply box that were the same size. That's more convenient (since the spiral keeps it all together). I've been filling those out - two pages at a time - every one to two days since then. It's been a great way to keep myself working these days. I'm just now working on a small dungeon for it. A mock tomb that's really an ancient wizard's secret cache, meant to hold things like magic items, spare spellbooks, and a coffin containing the wizard's Clone (via the spell of the same name). It's meant to be disguised so there's a succession of false endings, hence why it's designed to appear like some wealthy ancient dude's tomb. Anyone raiding it is led to believe they've looted everything already, even the "secret stuff".
when i run TFT, which i’ve run over many, many years like you, each player creates several additional PC character which are handed over to the GM. if the player’s PC is killed, the GM gives the player one of the characters that the player created; and is used as a NPC to begin with, and turns into the player’s PC after several turns. this way there is no time in which the player must wait. the other players need to introduce the NPC to the group.
Thanks for the tips. My copy should be in the mail soon. Very much looking forward to a classic system that's easy to homebrew and let's me imagine the heck out of it. Without being a prisoner to D&D established expectations or the limitations of classic D&D. Not used to 5th edition yet, so on-the-fly encounters are off the menu and I have to rebalance pre-written for smaller number of players using the complex arcane formulae from the DMG - not doing so tends to results in things I thought should be fairly decent medium-difficulty encounters turning into TPKs, so....
I've incorporated the Miracles section of FGU Lands of Adventure for my Priests. It gives them the opportunity for invocation or prayer to receive inspiration or a miracle in the form of gifts, or effects of nature/spirits/transformation. Results are very narrative vice mechanical descriptive.
Watched this video again a few months after obtaining the box set. I'm still playing Melee at this stage with my daughter. We end up playing Giant battles where they bash each other with clubs. Really glad you made TFT videos and would love to see more.
I hope, once this pandemic is over, you hold another open invite game night. I missed it last time (didn't see the video till like the day before) but I am excited to make it to the next one! Hope you are staying safe! Cheers!

I’m writing my own game for more that the last year, in beta playtest. Sorry I have not played much TFT. If your interested you could download at d9-games.Itch.io Its most of what I talk about and spending time with. But TFT is a great game system
I dropped by the Steve Jackson Games online forum for The Fantasy Trip and posted a link to this video. Hopefully, that will give you a little more exposure. There were already a couple positive comments from people who enjoyed the video. :)
I've had the Melee & Wizard re-release black box and the hardcover of In The Labyrinth sitting on my shelf for about half a year now. I need to get cracking on this game. Do you think 45 minutes of play time (JUST for Melee) at lunch will be enough to learn the rules (if done a few days per week) or should we devote an entire play session of about 4 hours to learning Melee & Wizard?
Well Jim, after your videos I looked into The Fantasy Trip and being a Warhammer player the tactical side of the game really appealed to me. By chance I searched on eBay and found a Legacy Edition Kickstarter here in Australia from a seller who wasn't going to play it. I won the auction and it got delivered today! I have read the Melee rules in around 30mins. I am quite impressed with the 3D6 system and how robust it is, the mechanics feel familiar to that of Warhammer, yet different (Strength v Toughness etc). Steve Jackson did an excellent job with this ruleset for the late 70s! Do you know if this was his first published game? So thanks for making me aware of this game. I now have it and look forward to playing it and exploring it with friends.
@@jimmurphy1591 Illuminati probably deserves a mention too. It was a big seller for him in the same time period that Car Wars was at its peak. And of course GURPS, which was essentially his response to Howard Thompson refusing his offer on the rights to TFT after Metagaming folded. It's nice to see Steve getting back to his older designs (and reviving some other folks' - GDW's Triplanetary and Tom Wham's Awful Green Things From Outer Space, for ex) after far too many years of focusing on Munchkin and Chez XXX. Too many great game designs from the 70s and 80s that younger gamers will never get to play without these sorts of updated revivals.
Waited for this video for quite some time. I am hosting a death test on Roll20. By the way, yesterday the SJG game convention occurred on discord, did you manage to show up? Thank you for sharing your knowledge. ITL is a system to be in love with.
I picked up the big boxed set and have had a hard time wrapping my head around the game. I think I understand why now: it's that GURPS chassis. There seems to be just so much fiddling around, spending XP to build characters piece by piece and ability by ability. Class-based systems are more intuitive to me.
I'd always recommend starting with Melee; that's the bones of the system and can be learned quickly. Grab some of the pregen cards from Legacy Edition and set up a few small arena combats. Then, using what you've learned from that, generate your own fighters. Once youve got that, add in a Wizard or two which brings in the third stat, IQ, by that time you will be ready for the full ITL experience by adding in Talents. Doing it this way, you learn the game as it was originally designed and from the ground up, so your understanding will be very solid. If you jump into the big 176 page book straightaway you may find you get a bit lost, as much of that isn't required to start off with. Oh and use the GM screen or a good reference sheet to help you. Good luck.
Huh. Doesn't armor only protect against the Fire spell's (or regular fire) up to its total stopping power (which could take several turns to reach) before it "heats up" and the damage starts going right through? Pretty sure that's how it used to work, although I may be conflating my 80s-era game systems.
