    Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

    Some rockhounding TH-camrs will find a rock and say, "Oh! That will be good cutter one day!" And then they won't include it in a cutting video until like two months later. I love that you've been immediately including snippets of a cutting segment. Immediate gratification! Awesome.

    Thank you for taking out with your family on an excursion. It feels like we get to know each member, as if the TH-cam community who follows you are extended hounding family. • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I see rockhounding pictures from people who hunt in deserts and it always looks so foreign to me. I almost always hunt in water and have the sound of waves as background music. It's also nice to have the water right there to quickly wet a rock if I happen to pick one up off the dry beach. Although that's what I'm used to, I'd love to try some other types of rock hunting.

      Thimble berries are really delicious. They look a lot like a raspberry, but they're very soft and easy to squish when you pick them. They have a really good sweet, but a little sour too. It's hard for me to describe taste. Let's just say that they're delicious. They seem to be everywhere in that area. Looked like a beautiful evening to be out there, not many people either from the looks of it.
    David is both right and wrong about the bedrock. Right, because it is sandy/coarse grained siltstone and very nicely bedded or laminated, but wrong because it's not Freda Sandstone; it's instead one of the few accessible exposures of Nonesuch Shale north of the Portage Canal. His analysis of the rock though was spot on, it's just an odd shale that doesn't fit the typical profile even though it has areas of organic carbon within it. Think about that, Precambrian petroleum!
    The rock at 5:20 we had a great discussion about this at the Show when someone brought in half a bucket full of these and came to the conclusion it is radial thomsonite. Apparently, it is quite common on Isle Royale, but rare on the Peninsula. Polished, they are very pretty.

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the clarification about the shale. David did think it was close to being a shale rather than a sandstone, but came down on the wrong side of that decision, I guess.
      As for the thomsonite, I was out with another geologist in the Keweenaw after I met up with you. Apparently there's yet another geologist who thinks it's not thomsonite or prehnite, but rather mesolite or a mix natrolite and mesolite. I don't have any idea what those mineral are, so I have no idea at this point.
