This is what I’ve tried to tell my 8 year old granddaughter about. (She takes lessons at a nearby stable and she’s timid to canter). I don’t explain it so she can understand me, plus I can’t SHOW her, since I don’t have a horse. I’m gonna show her you video and see if she doesn’t understand you better.
Josie, you are the first person in the entire riding world to give the most understandable answer to "open your hips." I couldn't visualize what others couldn't adequately explain. Thank you so much!! This instruction will make the world of difference for me 🤗🐎🤗
I find my biggest issue at thr canter is I pinch my knees when I get nervous/unbalanced, which makes me bounce a lot. Your video about following the trot with your pelvis helped me conceptualize "scooping" the canter too -- when I don't pinch my knees, it works beautifully 😅 now I just need to learn to relax! It doesn't help that for my entire childhood of riding I was basically only taught to canter in a half seat (hunters) lol
This is a very good advice. I remember when I started riding years ago, I started with hunter seat and transition to Dressage required correcting my seat first. I had to to learn to sit back. I mean further than I thought I was vertical at first. My perception was that I was vertical and yet watching my video taught me I was still forward of the vertical line. Also you have to open up your thighs and let your legs drop into your stirrups. You have to relax your thighs and contact lightly only with your lower calves. Make sure your stirrup leathers are neither TOO LONG or too short. Most people ride with stirrups way too long to emulate show riders who also ride with too long stirrups. Watch the old a grand masters and they ride stirrups short enough to drop their heels lower than their toes.
Your sitting trot video was like magic for me, I instantly got it during my next lesson after watching your video and applying your tips, you’re an excellent teacher, and you explain everything so clearly! I can’t wait to try canter again and use these tips during my next lesson! ❤ Thank you for your videos! Have a great day
I'm 62, riding again after 10 years away. My seat has degenerated to the point where I have to wear half-chaps to keep any kind of a seat at all. My poor lesson horse! Thanks SO much for this tip! My lesson horse thanks you too.
This is such an amazing tip! I’m just learning the canter, and was struggling with just the sitting trot. But even though I have a really good teacher, she can’t explain it as well as you have. So thank you very much!
I always find her info to WORK!! In the past I never understood OPEN YOUR HIPS and now this makes it so simple. Couple of rounds of practice and I am much improved. Thank you, Josie!
Thank you so much! I’m lucky to ride many horses at my barn (from ponies to massive 17 hand geldings.) I’ve been scared to canter for a long time and always tense up but your videos have been helping so much!
I was literally going to look up a video like this and this popped up in my recommended! Thank you so much for this, I took quite a few years off riding, and then had to take another break cause of covid, and the thing I feel I lost the most was my canter seat. I love cantering so it's not nervousness, it's most likely technique I lost over the time I haven't ridden. I'll give this a go next time I ride!
Great video thank you so much. I’m recently back into riding after having two kids and was struggling to sit the canter properly. I decided to try this in my lesson today and it was an absolute game changer, like night and day difference from the last canter attempt. Such a small change had such a large impact on my horse and connection ❤
This is such a good tip. I definitely tense and crunch up forwards as I transition to canter from trot so will try leaning back in my next lesson. Thanks again! 🙏
I can't wait to focus on this next lesson, I hear sit back ALL the time, mostly at the trot but it carries over into canter, I am horrible about tipping forward, it's so much better than it was, but it's such a a PROCESS, haha!
Thank you very much. I finally understood why I always made bang bang whenever i ride a horse. Tomorrow I'm gonna ride a horse, I will try to do your lessions.
I'm SO glad that Raleigh picked you to "judge". You are a fantastic trainer, instructor and rider and I can't wait to see your channel blow up with viewers now that Raleigh showcased the perfect traimer amd deconstructed your video. I sadly no longer ride due to a medical disability. I was in Pomy Club when I was growing up (an organization that has chapters all over the world and.many Olympic riders went through Pony Club gaining ratings as their skill and knowledge grew. A program I believe in so much and think all kids who are learning to ride will greatly benefit from and will have great success with). My spirit was shattered when I stopped riding. I have regretted it for 25 years, but know it would have been extremely damaging to my body. I am a new subscriber and really enjoy your instruction. When your seat was "flopping" or "slapping" the saddle, the first thing I said was "sit up, shoulders back and heels down". How often did I hear my coach screaming that from the other side of the arena....just often enough becuse I 2as 14 when I was chosen for the US National Eventing Championships to represent Colorado. I was one of just 4 on my team and I was on the horse we.got.from a very abusive barrel racer. With the instruction from my coach, I retrained that horse and she would jump anything. If you're watching this trainer's videos you're in the right place. Now go find the vhapter of Pony Club in your area and become a star!
So helpful as always! I have a bad habit of riding forward on his shoulder which makes us heavy on the forehand. Trying to fix this with the idea "ride the back end". Any other guidance you can give please ms josie 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼❤️😇
Hi Josie, thank you for giving this advice for canter. Is it possible to give some tips how to keep the horse cantering? I have doubt coz I could not feel in advance that my horse is going to fall into trot, or I have no idea how to kick during the canter to keep him cantering...
I actually like to ask my teacher to film me, then I watch the video again and can really see whats wrong. I really learnt like this to go with the horse flow with my hips as I was just crushing on myself before. Also I practice Western from time to time, and I realised I was asking from 0 to 100% for an order, like to back for example (like my reins are down then UP then DOWN then UP) and I had a bit of a heavy hand. Because I don't have a lot of strenght I didnt think so and I actually realised it while whaching the video. I kept this in mind, and the next lesson we did it again, and my hands were so smoooth and light I was really happy seeing myself improving in just one week. Now I try to keep in mind to ask 10%, then 20% if I don't have an answer, then 30, etc... but going more progressive in my aids. Filming myself reallly helped me to correct some things.
Warming up and doing hip opening stretches also helped me when I was a beginner. It helps you to become more likesided and gets rid of some of the stiffness so your horse will probably appreciate it as well.
Brilliant thank you. I prop forward a habit l picked up from riding racehorses but now know how to open my hips which l never really understood before. Thank you so much x
Ha, that figures 👍So far I’ve cantered only a handful of times and thought my hips are very flexible I’ve experienced it versions and had no clue what I did wrong/right. This explains , thank u 😊 🙏

Amelia that is a question the has a very involved answer and not something I can do in a comment on TH-cam I’m sorry but I will tell you this. Do not push your boundaries into fear. Just stretch them a little. If that means today you only walk and you feel the edges of your fear then be happy with that. Tomorrow you can trot if you feel more confident. Hello Josie, thank you for your great videos. I have a young horse, under saddle since October (a month break).
