0083 is the top Gundam, imo, because Kou Uraki is an interesting main character who doesn't suffer from the plot armor and Mary Sue a number of protagonists suffer from. His sheer dislike and hatred of Anavel Gato, The Nightmare of Solomon, is tangible - you can FEEL it coming from the character. The sheer rage and inept anger when Nina stops him aboard the colony to save Anavel whom she can't let go of (and who is using her) is...like, you can taste it. The series is charged with emotion and is just excellent. The excellent design of the mobile suits and the Albion just adds to all this. I've loved 0083 since the first time I watched it.

With this song I completely feel like a Mobile Suit pilot, with my GM Command or Ground Type, and I feel how I would like to feel, besides it helps me avoid all the social environment that surrounds me, just by getting into my mind and watching myself pilot the GM as if it were his own anime, where the protagonist does not touch any gundam, not even an MS in a gundam costume, because someone is going to come and tell me "but there is MSth08", but that does not count either because it is also a Gundam with its improvements, I want a series where the protagonist uses a GM mass product in the one-year war and this great song plays, without touching any gundam, they only appear in the background as if they were GMs, that is, the Ground Type
The new Gundam film requiem for vengeance kind of fits your description, except it's Zaku pilots and not GMs. The trailer mentions little of the actual Gundam, and even portrays as it a devil as seen by the Zeon pilots.

A straight translation may not have fit with the music. He was likely faced with either butchering the song or rewriting the whole thing and decided the rewrite would make a better product. We may never know, but still, its not like the end product is bad.

0083 is nothing like Top Gun in the least apart from the main characters being pilots. The characters, the dynamics, the plot, absolutely nothing is even remotely similar, and people that think otherwise probably like to eat paste for dinner.
Kotzen did his own version. Why do a direct copy of the original? It's not that the lyrics aren't good enough. Being different is what makes musicians unique.
