Smart Switch Won't Connect To Wifi: 3 WAYS TO FIX

Are you having trouble getting your smart switch to connect to wifi? We have 3 easy fixes that can get your smart switch connected to the internet.
Most smart wifi switches connect to wifi networks in a similar manner, and there are a few simple solutions to most causes of smart light switches failing to connect to the internet or switches that won't connect to wifi.
    3 WIFI LIGHT SWITCH FIXES:
    1. Connect to 2.4GHz Network
    2. Check Wifi Network and Password
    3. Wifi Network Range/ Wifi Network Age
One of the most common causes of smart switches not connecting to wifi is that many smart switches will connect only to 2.4GHZ networks even though most newer routers have both 2.4GHZ and 5GHZ wifi networks. What will commonly happen is that unless you disable the 5GHZ network temporarily the smart light switch will get stuck trying to connect to the 5GHZ wifi network and will not connect.

Man you are a life saver. Why don't they make 5ghz compatible low-end wifi products.?

Thanks for watching! Not entirely sure but 2.4ghz travels further and through walls better than 5ghz. 5ghz has a higher bandwith but for smart devices like light switches they don't much bandwidth. So manufacturers seem to choose 2.4ghz because it can provide more range for a wifi product.

    Thanks for making this!
    I had a use case that seemed pretty normal;
The outlet where my entertainment center is at is controlled by 2 switches (1 at each entrance) in my living room. Unfortunately, the 2 outlets we use for lamps are just constant power.
SO I wanted to remove those switches and wire them permanently on so they don't get flipped (PlayStation HATES having the power cut, even in "rest mode").
I was hoping to find a switch that would control a separately located outlet because there is NO way I am rewiring the living room!
I happened to find the "Cync by GE" switches and plugs. They have a wire-free switch that can control plugs. I originally thought the wire-free switches can only be stuck to the wall (peel and stick) or screwed to it with it's bracket. However... I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that they mount bracket actually has standard wall box screw pattern so it can be installed IN an outlet box! The plugs are just plug in style ones, rather then complete replacement outlets.
Everything worked pretty well... The app isn't very intuitive and I had issues getting the switches to drive the plugs because you would think they need to be in "groups" (an in app option) but they don't. They will control anything in the same "room" (custom room names can be set).
Unfortunately I can only get ONE of the switches to work, none worked in the beginning though.
Originally your video clued me in to the first issue.... My wifi router had "simple setup" turned on. It makes the 5ghz and 2.4ghz share the same name. So I fixed this (giving each it's respective name) then after it didn't work I shut off 5ghz. Unfortunately I only got the 1 plug to work. I assumed it was just the "meh" brand of router I had since it came off the Amazon treasure truck (TP-Link Ax1800) and my "good" router is still at my old house (we are currently moving). Although when I finally tried the 2nd switch just for shits-n-giggles it WORKED! The "connecting" screen took FOREVER but it worked.
I am still having issues with the first plug though. It will not connect... I even moved it to the same room as the router but still no go... Full signal, same password, just not working. It DOES show up as connected in the "clients" section of my router but 🤷‍♂️
No idea. If anyone has any experience with the Cync by GE stuff OR had a better product for my use case I'd LOVE to know about it!!
Thanks though, the video totally got the 1 to work. Haha

You are a lifesaver sir, thank you so much! My Wiz smart bulbs were connecting just fine but plugs were not. I tried separating 2.4 and 5 on different SSID and that didn't work. But doing like you said and temporarily turning off 5Ghz worked perfectly. Thanks again!

For a Wemo switch there are a couple of tricks to getting it to register on your router. Never select the option to save the password for later use, it won't work on subsequent Wemo's. When adding have several wifi AP's in range with the same password, select the one with weakest signal, enter password and it will start with that AP and then move to others until it connects.

Thank you, you helped me solve me problem, not with a smart switch but with an Amazon Blink camera module. After an update to my Asus router, I had selected to allow the Asus RT-AX86u to smart switch between 2.4 & 5 GHz, and I had to re-establish connections with all my devices. But the Blink would not recognize the wifi password. Thanks to you, I now know that I had to eliminate the smart switch option and go with separate 2.4 and 5 options. All my devices now use the 5 GHz except Blink which successfully connected to the 2.4 option. Hope that helps someone else.

For a Sonof CH4 device, I had to use my old android phone to pair the device and then switch back over to my iPhone for use. Many more users for the control app in the android community so maybe more support for the devices.

I figured out my #Geenie TAP smart switches (one has a dimmer), my spouse's phone would not allow them to connect. I wasted two hours with iphone 11 (pro plus max extra XX BS) trying to get them to "talk". My iphone 6 added them in 4 seconds each. I did the quick flashing to connect. If you have #xfinity, disable the 5ghz for a few minutes by using the myxfi app or site. FYI: Save the setting to disable 5ghz twice, it's so fun! My set up is Geenie + Google Hub & Home mini. You have to set up geenie first, then add them to google app. The google app is very intuitive, you won't have any problems there. It doesn't seem to matter which google hardware you pick as the primary, they talk to each other instantly.

Comcast Gateway update, ( S Florida) some end user controls are missing, You have to call cust support to have the gateway divided up into two different Wi-Fi systems. 2.4 & 5 . Then you have control of your wifi... Gateway > Connection > Wi-Fi > 5 GHz > EDIT > toggle from Green Enabled to Red Disabled > scroll to the bottom to save settings. Remember to repeat to "Enable" and save settings....May 2021

I found that the problem was in the router itself. Somehow the router got an error setting for the IP address of one of my 11 Kasa plugs. Tried everything in this video but the only thing that worked was to install a backup of my Asus router firmware. It then worked. If you have no backup resetting the router to factory might fix your problem if nothing else works.

Just after you put in your WIFI password AND before you hit enter you need to go to your router and press the "WPS" button. This will open the router to accept your new WIFI device. The time the router is open depends on the brand of router. Usually 5 minutes and the flashing light showing it is open will go out.
At this time the router goes back to block anyone from getting in.

I had a similar problem with the Meross MSS510 Single Pole switches. The configuration routine would seem to work until the very last step, when it would say 'Almost Done'. Sometimes the configuraiton rotine would finish, but the switches would work erratically afterward. It turned out that my Wi-Fi was set to 2 GHz Channel 11. After some troubleshooting, I discovered that the Meross Single Pole switches will only work if you set your Wi-Fi router to use 2 GHz Channel 6. You can go into your router and set it to use only Wi-Fi channel 6. I also tested the other popular 2 GHz Wi-Fi channel - Channel 1. The Meross Single Pole switch would not work on that channel either. Interestingly enough, it does not seem to be a problem with the Meross 3-way switches.
