@Tesla-Effect Not to ruin your hopes, but i highly doubt lego would do it, kids these days know johnny thunder as the guy on that one ride from legoland and nothing else.
Around 5:45, that AT-AT MOC from ‘82 is, in fact, a pretty good representation of how difficult making any sort of walker was with the parts of the time, and you’re not wrong about how much we’d all been wishing for Lego Star Wars by 1999. I had been dreaming of that moment for almost 20 years. Literally: I had an extremely vivid dream sometime in the early ‘80s that Lego Star Wars sets were being released and I’d gotten to see them early (Millennium Falcon, TIE Fighter, X-Wing, AT-AT), and to this day I still can recall snippets of the dream-and I never remember my dreams. But I knew as soon as I woke up that it would never happen. So I was a kid again when the first OT Star Wars sets were revealed, even as crude as they were.
The original blocky 1999 Star Wars sets will always be my favorite iteration. I was 11 when they came out, and it's near impossible to describe how magical it was to see that line come out.
I remember how excited all my friends were when I got the complete Pod Racer box set for Christmas. For a long time I didn't think I got that many Star Wars sets, but looking back I had two thirds of The Phantom Menace catalog and half the Attack of the Clones including the Slave I. For some reason I thought there were way more sets out there. Kind of fell out of Legos by Revenge of the Sith.
I got the 1999 Y-Wing and Darth Vader TIE Advanced, and Luke's landspeeder and I absolutely adored them. I know they're blocky, they don't have the "screen accurate" shapes and colours but I loved them.
That stuff was my first introduction to Star Wars, followed by the demo version of Jedi Outcast and then the actual films. It went back full circle and now I only enjoy the LEGO stuff.
The yellow minifgs all suck, they dont represent racial diveristy or "everyone" like Lego said at all. Theyre all the same color, which teaches the wrong message of "sameness is good" to kids. Plus all of the designs for the their faces/hair usually look white anyways. What black or Indian kid is gonna grab a yellow minifg and go "Oh yeah this represents me!" They wont. Bless the licensed themes for introducing different skin tones, they need to have those in all of the sets, get rid of the dated yellow figs I say!
I always thought Star Wars was one of Lego's most popular themes. When I found out that they weren't a huge hit at first because of there being no movies I was like, "Say what?!?!"
Good god the nostalgia. I have the entire years 1 and 2 lines connected and displayed in my room. So proud of it, it was my childhood dream to have the entire castle.
Favourite star wars set for me was definitely the droid carrier from the late 2000's that gave you roughly 20ish droids and was baso an army builder, never made something that good since tbh
Ya boi crippling depression The MTT from 2007, one of the best LEGO Star Wars sets ever made. 16 regular Battle Droids, 2 pilot droids, 2 security droids, and a destroyer droid. 1191 pieces for originally just 100 bucks. There’s a reason that people love it so much, and that it goes for so much now days.
I honestly do agree with you, having licenses back in the early 2000s was more of a specialty among the creative ideas that Lego itself could come up with. Nowadays I do believe that the design elements make the sets way better than their original counterparts, believe me I grew up with the original Star Wars and Harry Potter sets so I know exactly how that feels. However, licenses nowadays make it feel like turning everything into Lego but forgetting what Lego itself actually is.
I fell in love with Harry Potter back in 2017. I have had on/off again relationship with Star Wars my whole life. I never liked the HP sets as a kid, but as an adult, I love them all. I loved the origional SW sets until around 2003-2005, and I love these new sets since about 2 years ago. HOWEVER, I agree with you on some of the points you make about how as good as some of these themes and sets are, they are destorying LEGO's original ideas and those fun iconic sets of the space exploration, ocean fighting, midevel sets, etc. I couldn't believe how LEGO had aquired the license to Spiderman and Jurassic Park as a kid, but now I can't keep up as an adult that even has a kid who likes LEGO himself on all the new sets. Wish I had all of my old sets from 1998-2003 time frame (mainly). Those are iconic and I appreciate your youtube channel for showing these sets, some of which I have forgotten since then.
Being born in 84 and raised on Lego and as a fan of most of what they have actual licences for now, you had to get creative. Here's an example: I remember my friends and I would use the long translucent antenna pieces as lightsabers. Now kids can just use, well, actual Lego lightsabers. I can really enjoy some of the licensed lines. I own stuff from Lego Batman, Marvel (mostly only comic based), Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, Ghostbusters, and so on...but I too always found myself annoyed when, say, they'd deem LOTR Castle, POTC Pirates, or SW Space for the year or longer. It was always kind of heartbreaking! Like a great example here; I would take Monster Fighters over Scooby Doo ANY DAY!
One of the few times, I actually had most of the Harry Potter sets, and some Star Wars sets, then I’d cross them over with Life on Mars and Spider man and while I long stopped collecting legos seeing all the improvements is a treat for me. I think it’s cause of LEGO that I enjoy random crossovers.
Great review, and definitely a nice nostalgia trip. Fun fact, the TIE Fighters in the original trilogy were actually meant to be blue, but that made them invisible when filming with bluescreen. So in a way, the original LEGO sets weren't too inaccurate. Also, those were my favorite Droideka minifig builds too - they never really got them right afterward, with their most recent redesign looking especially terrible. Incidentally, your voice work in this video seems to be improving - I don't know what it is about it, but you really nailed it in this video!
Those mini Star Wars sets remind me of one of my favorite lego sub-theme of all time: the X-Pods. It's amazing how Lego has made it so easy to bring little sets along to handle at work or something, with the nice casing so that none of the pieces get lost.
It’s criminal how LEGO never bothered to make an actual Sonic The Hedgehog set, especially after the Sonic DLC Pack for LEGO Dimensions. Just imagine building a bunch of classic Badniks bundled with a bulky Robotnik figurine, or a fully-working Animal Capsule filled with Flickies, or even a recreation of the Doomsday Zone fight.
As for the Adventure and Modern Eras, the cinematic moments and Final Bosses would be absolute treats to fully construct; the chases with the Emerald Coast orca and City Escape GUN truck would be amazing, Metal Overlord already literally transformed himself piece by piece in Heroes so it’d work perfectly with LEGO, Dark Gaia and the Gaia Colossus would tower over everything and the Egg Nega Wisp Armour would’ve been pretty rad.
They did continue the mini-trend in the form of the board games, which I personally thought were awesome, especially the fantasy ones. The microfigures were an interesting design and worked well for the games themselves.
I'm genuinely not trying to be mean the fact that you have a a slight lisp makes these in depth analysis of lego sets feel really genuine and charming. Keep it up man these are very fun well thought out videos
I would play with the star wars legos so much that i would forget what they actually looked like in the movie. Once I saw them again I was like: "THAT's what it's supposed to look like??"
If lego rewind ever comes back, please make the April fools episode a review on lego marvel where you basically just say “it looks like marvel” in dozens of different ways. It’d be really funny and help show viewers the issue with a video like that.
8:16 I don’t really blame you. They are small, don’t look too bad, and can roll into a ball pretty well. It’s not overly big like the one in the first MTT set, or as odd looking as the one from that one battle pack.
Back in 2012-2013 they had an awesome SW:The Old Republick sets. They were truly unique compared to all of the X-wings and such. Check 'em out if you hadn't yet.
It was Harry Potter that got me into the LEGO toyline, so kudos to ya for covering it! ...still want that Chamber of Secrets and a new Fawkes the phoenix.
I want a remake of all of the mini or midi stuff, possibly even more mini/midi designs for other lines like Ninjago. I really enjoy mini/midi scale builds, especially as someone who loves Super Sentai and combining robots as a whole, it’s so much easier to make good looking, slick, transforming, combining, and actually pose-able mecha in that scale
It's very subtle but the tie fighters in the movies are actually between blueish grey and sand blue, which is probably why they went with plain blue for the first few years since old grey is so... Brown
I was in a Lego store and the modular bookshop was on display and I heard someone ask “what’s that of?”. Licensed themes are so common nowadays that the average person thinks every Lego set is licensed.
@@NickonPlanetRipple straight up facts. I think Ideas has the best licensed sets because since it’s one shot, they put more effort into it being an ascetically pleasing display set with good design instead of a rushed, put together play set. The Doctor Who and Yellow Submarine sets are some of my favourite sets of all time.
@@scrambled5948 And then they ask "Where are the fortnite sets?" because they seriously think Lego does EVERYTHING. They've been TRAINED by all the big companies merging together and buying up smaller properties to think that it's normal for one company to just have everything they could want. It's also parents asking their kids "Hey, what are you into this week?" the kids say "Markiplier!" so they parent goes looking for Markiplier Legos. The idea is to be able to bring >insert here< home tell their kid, "See? I know what you like. I LISTEN to you. I'm not insecure! I'm attentive!" Bah. Garbage.
I love how in the star wars section, you summed up literally every prequel fans wants from LEGO, a new Jango's Slave 1, and a Blue MTT, that's all I and many others ask for. LEGO just doesn't deliver..
That last quote “licensed sets need to be balanced out with LEGOs themes it needs to be 50/50” is very accurate The main reason why legos themes fail is because they don’t market them and if they have a show or something based around them it usually isn’t well developed. But when they do promote their own themes and give them proper story’s they do extremely well (ninjago, bionicle) Personally I’d love a new original CCBS theme
Fun fact: the Basilisk isn't actually green! The animatronic/puppet they used for filming actually had black skin, but the Chamber of Secrets was filled with a green light/glow that altered its appearance. That said, I'm pretty sure the canonical color outside of movie-magic is supposed to be dark green, so the video game version is the closest we've gotten and even that's not quite right.
Another fun evolution of Minifigures thanks to Star Wars and Harry Potter is the start of double sided faces. This only started because Professor quirrell from the first Harry Potter movie actually did have a face on the back of his head, representing an element of Voldemort. It's very cool that since then we've had many expressions for popular characters
Holy crap. I can't believe I missed that. It's so obvious, too! I need to mention that in the penultimate episode (the season 3 recap before the finale).
For me my favourite licensed themes as a kid was the original LEGO Batman. That toy-line actually introduced me to the Batman universe and defined for me what all the characters and vehicles look like. They were also great sets with a fantastic Batmobile, Batwing and Batcave. Sadly I think Batman has run his course when it comes to LEGO, a lot of the sets just make worse versions of the vehicles and if there’s ever a cool exclusive minifig like Killer Moth or Batwoman I’d rather buy them separately online for cheap instead of putting a ton of money into buying another Batmobile.
I wish we could get a new and improved General Grievous minifig. The original one had very little movement and detail, but it succeeded in the from 2 to 4 arms transformation a lot better than the current one. The new one on the other hand is way too short to get the scale right.
The Harry Potter sets have always been rising in quality. The Star Wars sets, meanwhile, flip back and forth in quality as much as the movies. Those are getting way too expense. I think the last reasonably priced wave was Summer 2017/Fall 2017, and that’s sorta where my interest in LEGO Star Wars kicked the bucket.
I remember having a Star Wars ship, that me with my brother didn't put together. Our parents gave away all to charity. Some orphan might be playing with that set to this day.
Although my favorite line is "Creator" especially after they started focusing on "big boy" sets like the modular buildings, I think we owe a lot to the movie tie in sets. It forces LEGO sets to imitate realism (as realistic as spaceships and wizards get) a bit more to fit in with the movie's style. I really enjoy seeing how they implement muted colors and builds they come up with to imitate elements from the films. Since LEGO is in a much better place now then it was before, the builds are generally very interesting as opposed to relying on a lot of pre-formed large pieces that early licensed sets did. That all said, I think the best LEGO sets to come out has always been from LEGO's own movie's. The LEGO movie sets, The Ninjago movie sets and the LEGO Batman movie sets are my personal favorites as I think they blend detailed design and toy elements perfectly. Not that I buy them specifically, they tend to be on the expensive side, but the builds are very inspiring. I tend to buy smaller creator sets and use it's pieces to build things in the LEGO films' sets style.
When I was a kid in 1999 I didn't think I had that many Lego Star Wars sets, but looking back at the catalogues I had more than 2/3 of the initial Phantom Menace lineup. I even had had the three Pod Racer set.
I want more Original LEGO themes. Sure, the licensed themes are neat, but now everything is ending//being rebooted, and I wasn't actually part of that first wave of releases (I was born in 2000, so right in the middle of both releases lol) Once Star Wars or Harry Potter, or whatever finally dies out... what's next?
It was the introduction of the LEGO Star Wars license in 1999 and the LEGO Harry Potter license in 2001 that opened up the Pandora's Box for more LEGO licenses in the years to come, including Disney/Mickey Mouse, LEGO Sports NBA Basketball/Gravity Games, Spiderman, Batman, SpongeBob SqurePants, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Indiana Jones and many, many more...
In LEGO's defense, the First Order AT-ST set reflects the scene in The Last Jedi where BB-8 Hijacks a walker and almost the whole head gets ripped off as it breaks loose of its docking port. They could have at the very least included the parts necessary for a head, with an easy break-off feature, instead of a stupid elevator build. What pissed me off more was that Heavy Scout Walker which didn't show up anywhere and was just pure concept art.
I'm familiar with the scene, I know what they were doing. It just sucks that they left out the head. Now people may never get to buy a complete, proper First Order AT-ST.
@@NickonPlanetRipple on the bright side, the set sold poorly and LEGO will probably make up for it in the Star Wars wave after Episode IX releases. I doubt The Last Jedi will be the last time we see a First Order AT-ST, much like in ROTJ, where we see AT-ATs parked on Endor's forest moon. I have a hunch Episode IX will be a pseudo-apology for Rian Johnson "subverting our expectations".
My brother had the Mos Espa podrace set, by the time I got it, all the pieces were mixed in a big crate of assorted bricks. It felt so satisfying to follow the instructions and slowly dig through the box to get all the pieces. Slow and methodical in just the right way, if a little frustrating sometimes.
Such a shame about JKR being a massive bigot, just completely colours all the Harry Potter stuff I look back on, even though once upon a time I would have loved Harry Potter Lego.
While at a antique store earlier this year, found a bag ziplock bag full of minifigs of 90's an maybe early 2000's characters. Harry Potter an a bank looking Goblin and a Star Wars X - Wing pilot, The Star Wars buildable figures could see a type of vehicle build done up for them, besides the one for the Biker Trooper that was cool looking an could see more done there for that. Wonder what would happen if Star Wars and Harry Potter was combined in a crossover of some kind? Other then that where you see Boba Fett and Darth Maul walk in asking about a ship, to the one seen with A2-D2 showing a recording for someone to make more ships, could see something like that be brought back and added on to in some way maybe?
I only knew Star Wars through Lego back then and I was surprised at how grey and not blocky everything was when I saw the real thing. Also I feel like those weird planet container balls from 2013 could've used a mention. They were such unique parts and I've seen some cool uses for them in mocs.
I just..... couldn't think of anything interesting to say about them. I could've also talked about pricing more or flick-fire missiles, but it just would've made it even more of a Star Wars episode with a little bit of Harry Potter in it.

13:22 Bold of you to assume that Disney will let that happen within the next hundred years.
Brown
Supposedly, they were going to be an even richer shade of blue in the movies but that made them blend into the background too much.
I was in a Lego store and the modular bookshop was on display and I heard someone ask “what’s that of?”. Licensed themes are so common nowadays that the average person thinks every Lego set is licensed.
EXACTLY! And when you tell them it's something original lego made, they just scowl like, "Why would I wanna buy that? That's not in any movie I like."
I'm attentive!"
Bah. Garbage.
I love how in the star wars section, you summed up literally every prequel fans wants from LEGO, a new Jango's Slave 1, and a Blue MTT, that's all I and many others ask for. LEGO just doesn't deliver..
And that was 3 years ago.
Sad pirates fan: well the clone wars had space pirates and body hunters are kind of like pirates right...(a single tear sheds from there eye)
Now THIS is the Lego Rewind I've been waiting for. If I wasn't collecting Bionicles, I was most likely collecting Star Wars kits.
That last quote “licensed sets need to be balanced out with LEGOs themes it needs to be 50/50” is very accurate
The main reason why legos themes fail is because they don’t market them and if they have a show or something based around them it usually isn’t well developed.
But when they do promote their own themes and give them proper story’s they do extremely well (ninjago, bionicle)
Personally I’d love a new original CCBS theme
I can't agree more.
8:15 they’re called Droidekas, gawddamnit!
Lego HP is probably my favorite licensed lego theme
What a combo!! This was back when Licensed themes didn’t bother me at all.
Mann 2005 - 2011, what a time
I think "Smooth Elegant designs attempted with 2001 era legos" is still a cool aesthetic
This was the first Rewind ep I watched. It is great!
The lego clone wars/2010 harry potter sets are some of my favorite lego sets of all time. So much nostalgia!
I remember having a Star Wars ship, that me with my brother didn't put together. Our parents gave away all to charity.
Some orphan might be playing with that set to this day.
Came back to this series after I forgot about it existing for 8 months, binge watched 10 episodes, had a blast!
And there are another 9 episodes to go!
At the beginning when I was little, I started to hear more about LEGO Star Wars after the release of the LEGO Star Wars The Videogame.
I totally agree, a balance of license and originality!
"Perfectly balanced, as all things should be."
Yeah, way back then, those sets looked plain and blocky, but now they are more detailed. Progress at it's finest.
Nostalgic is crushing me when i watch your Videos
When I was a kid in 1999 I didn't think I had that many Lego Star Wars sets, but looking back at the catalogues I had more than 2/3 of the initial Phantom Menace lineup. I even had had the three Pod Racer set.
Man, I always loved these lines.
The castle was so cool!
I want more Original LEGO themes.
Sure, the licensed themes are neat, but now everything is ending//being rebooted, and I wasn't actually part of that first wave of releases (I was born in 2000, so right in the middle of both releases lol)
Once Star Wars or Harry Potter, or whatever finally dies out... what's next?
It was the introduction of the LEGO Star Wars license in 1999 and the LEGO Harry Potter license in 2001 that opened up the Pandora's Box for more LEGO licenses in the years to come, including Disney/Mickey Mouse, LEGO Sports NBA Basketball/Gravity Games, Spiderman, Batman, SpongeBob SqurePants, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Indiana Jones and many, many more...
Very underrated channel
Love this
0:35 I'm sure people actually said that.
were on the fringe
Sonic Heroes ost in the background? I see you're a man of culture as well! You've earned a new sub
I was so fed up with the modern at-st that didn't have a head, but featured BB-8 on it,that I made a bootleg custom head armor for it.
I remember making my own Pod racer since the one you get in stores was three pack, which made it WAY too expensive for us
I loved it when lego did sets for old republic stuff
That big vulture droid was my first star wars set
Man I loved the mini sets
My first lego sets ever were Harry Potter and Star Wars. Say what you want about licensed themes, but to me, these two never get old. :D
Yup. If I knew about all that stuff at the time, I wouldn't have spent as much of the episode talking about HP. I've since sworn off buying any sets.
I honestly think these deserve separate episodes even if they are so similar
I only knew Star Wars through Lego back then and I was surprised at how grey and not blocky everything was when I saw the real thing. Also I feel like those weird planet container balls from 2013 could've used a mention. They were such unique parts and I've seen some cool uses for them in mocs.
I just..... couldn't think of anything interesting to say about them. I could've also talked about pricing more or flick-fire missiles, but it just would've made it even more of a Star Wars episode with a little bit of Harry Potter in it.
Don’t think I didn’t notice the Star Fox assault ost throughout the Star Wars segment. Nice touch.
11:02 i’m not gonna defend the price for that set but it is meant to be missing the head
They could've easily given it a full head that detaches to recreate the scene fully.
That’s fair
snape glows because he's CIA and CIA glow in the dark
I actually like the Clone Wars faces. I grew up with them.
