- Hello friends!!! Welcome or welcome back to my channel. In this video I have a (let's call it interesting) plant unboxing for you. This unboxing absolutely did NOT go as planned LOL. You don't want to miss this one LOL.
I ordered some terrarium Begonias and some Hoyas and let's just say one of the shipments did great and one did not.

Hi Gena! Happy Mother's Day! I live about 2 hours from Gabriella Plants and hubby took me to their open house at their greenhouses for Mother's Day. Unfortunately, they were closing earlier than usual due to the heat, but fortunately, they stayed another 30 minutes and let me shop! That was so nice of them! I got a load of starter plants, including Philo squamiferum, staghorn fern superbum, Calathea musaica, Rhapidophora tetrasperma, and several others. The people there were so nice, the owner came out and we chatted a bit, I will definitely be going back. The one young woman was so cute she kept saying the staghorn was Super Bum😅. I didn't have the heart to tell her it's Latin and pronounced superb-um. I only know this because when I was in horticultural college they made a big deal about proper pronunciation and spelling, we had spelling tests for plant names! For anybody that has not heard of Gabriella Plants, they are a plant seller in Florida, and their stuff is really nice and their prices are so so reasonable. And the people are AWESOME! I have seen other content creators unbox them before, but I'm not sure if you ever have.
Hi Sue!!!! How fun!!!! Haha so funny about the Superbum. I only know the proper pronunciation for that one because I’ve heard it pronounced before. Clearly she doesn’t watch plant TH-cam lol. I have purchased from Gabriella Plants a couple of times but that was before my TH-cam days. I would definitely do an unboxing of their plants in the future. I am subscribed to their mailing list but haven’t checked their website recently. I’ll have to take a look!

Oh no, that begonias really got cooked by the heat pack. Begonias are sensetive and I hope you get a replacement. The hoyas look great 👌😍

Cute little new Hoya you added to your collection….and happy your planter over wintered some plants! I love that! Happy to hear your butterfly garden is coming up too! It will be so pretty this year! I ordered a grow tent because my landlord is telling me I need to have 6 plants per room! I have never had 30 plants since I lived here for the past 10 years….I can put all my baby plants in the tent but am really stressed out right now! ESP when people don’t know about plants and making recommendations of what they think they know! Big long hugs……..you will have to let me know what grid system worked for you on Amazon….when you get time….hopefully we can move but that is not as easy with the market right now but staying hopeful! Oh my gosh that sounds so incredibly stressful. I’m so sorry you are having to go through this. Ugh!!!! Big hugs back at you. I guess this is a great excuse to have a tent!!! Happy Mother’s Day, Gena! Sorry about your begonias but glad they are replacing them. I wonder if the box got too warm. I’ve had plants arrive in bad condition a couple of times and the sellers replaced or refunded. Your Hoyas are very cute..What interesting flowers on the polypus!

Happy Mother's Day Gena. Unfortunately, the carriers (some) are careless in handling packages. Maybe the sellers can take the matter up with USPS and provide pics. So very sorry for the damaged plants.

Hi Gina🖐! What a mess! Begonias are sensitive to ship. It seems too much moisture in the cups for the water retaining stems & thin leaves and the addition of the heat pack, bad combination! Hopefully the seller will do the right thing and replace them. I ordered a Hoya Benchaii Red from an Etsy seller and I received what looked like a small leaf pulled off a bush! Seller replaced with a not so nice Benchaii which is struggling. That was not a hoya and not cheap. I don't trust to order from them again. I have received hoyas that were dying from the moment I took out of the box and each seller not only sent replacement but extra cuttings of hoyas! I like the nummeriloides, they're so cute. Hi, Dee! I'm also thinking it was too much water just by how the plant reacted to whatever the heck happened! Oh wow...sounds like a terrible experience for you. Most plant sellers I feel know to do the right thing, either replace or refund.
Yes, mine responded and hopefully sends replacements. I'm sure they will...I've had nothing but a good experience up until this shipment. And he responded right away. I'll let you guys know how the replacements do. Maybe I'll even film the unboxing :). Thank you!!!

I would have voted African Violet. I have grown my share in my 69 years. Have always loved them. I quit growing them because I would get frustrated by them losing bottom leaves and ending up with a tall bare stem. Probably user error. lol
Apparently when that happens you just repot them and cover the bare stem with new soil. I’ve done it before and it works. I love that “ user error” 😂.
I missed your last video 😢 I will have to go back and watch it. Sorry I missed the vote this time, I would have been completely torn as I love both Begonia and African Violets. Your Begonia delivery was so disappointing 😔 I hope the seller can sort something for you. Love the Polypus, I purchased one recently as I was captivated by those blooms too. 😍😊

15:56 And that is why I refuse to use USPS to ship my plants to me! FedEx is my go to shipper when I want to order plants.
I have always had pretty good luck with usps but maybe I’ll look into FedEx. Do they have a service similar to priority mail? Like 3-4 days transit time? The usps let me down big time last week!
Hi Gena, Happy mother's day! I am sorry your begonia plants being DOA. Definitely reach out to the seller. To me it looks like what ever happened was during shipping. So weird tho'. Maybe the particular plants you bought are also extremely fragile? I guess I missed your episode where you did the violet vs begonia survey. I would have picked the African violet... because flowers. The other had no flowers. I am all about the flowers. I have bought from TQHoyas, they often have some of the more rare Hoyas. Great place to get them if you don't mind one or two leaf cuttings.
Hi Cate! Thank you!!! They are definitely a more fragile plant being terrarium Begonias. But I've ordered this type of plant from this seller before with absolutely no problems. That's what makes me think it was rough handling. Pretty crazy. The box looked fine but it totally seemed like someone shook the heck out of that box LOL. Oh it was the video before this one. Every two weeks I do a little "contest" like this where I'll show two plants and if you want you can let me know which plant you prefer or which is your favorite. Just a fun interaction thing we can do together and I get to learn what plants you guys like :). Oh yes...the flowers!!!! I'm all about the flowers too. With African Violets and Hoyas...and even begonias can have some super cute flowers.
A lot of my plants have started out as just one or two leaf cuttings. I kind of prefer it that way...the smaller the better when adding to my huge collection LOL. It's fun to watch them grow too :).

Looks like the begonias boiled? I think the polypus, is pronounced Poe-lip-Us? The begonia cabinet is beautiful.
I know!!!! That’s why I thought maybe it was the heat pack. The only other thing I could think of is maybe overwatered before shipping and then super rough handling. It’s pretty bizarre. Hi Tina! Every single plant I sent out last week was delayed by the post office for some reason. They all delivered either on Friday or Saturday….and still one not delivered yet. Hello Gina, happy Mother's Day, what a disappointment and how sad to receive plants like this, with the experience that I have buying and selling plants, the worst mistake that I saw there is that the substrate is super wet and the heat of the hot bag cooked them.
Hello!!! Thank you so much!!! So disappointing for sure. The plant had to have had a LOT of moisture in it to have gotten that red coloring all over everything when it "melted". I also was thinking overwatered but combined with rough handling.

Thank you Duncan!!!! Happy Sunday to you!!! We’re having off and on showers with sun in between, beautiful fluffy clouds, it’s just gorgeous out there. We might even do some outdoor planting today which would be an ideal day for me 💚💚💚.
I'va had this happen with hoya's being shipped .... I see it happen when the soil is very wet and the heat pack basicly steams them in the cardboard box .... BUT I would think begonias would do better with that since most of them like high humidity .... with that said I think it's possibly more on the seller ..... they seemed like they might have been too moist and the heat back cooked them .... usually rough shipping has broken leaves and tossed / lost soil.
The two that were packed together definitely had broken leaves and tossed soil. The "melted" one didn't (although maybe it did have broken leaves but it was so disfigured I couldn't tell). I was leaning toward too much water on the melted one since the packaging around it was all red. But had to be a combination of that and rough handling since one of the plants was knocked loose from the little pot/cup. It's pretty crazy how they arrived considering the outer box looked perfect. No dents or anything.
@ThePinkTrellis They handle packages so bad .... considering how much shipping cost etc. I've had boxes with fragile all over them come in smashed and crushed.

Hi Gena. I wasn’t going to add more negativity to online ordering because I’ve had a lot of fabulous plants from great nurseries but one sticks in my mind and will forever. Not only did the maranta come with spider mite and infect my beautiful Alocasia Poly, the rest of the plants looked like someone had played football with the box. I received a 50% refund but that was not enough considering that only one out of about 6 plants could be salvaged. It turned me off online plant shopping for a long time.😢
Hi, Renate! Oh gosh.....I see why you wouldn't want to order online after that. I wish I could remember who my very first online order was from. I want to say Planterina! Maybe a Hoya linearis! Up until then, it was all just local shops.
The contents of my box looked like they played football with the box but the outside was perfectly fine. So strange!
I have swirn off steves leaves, they used to have pretty decent quality plants and customer service but last few times i had issues with the quality and they denied there was a problem despite the pictures i sent. So i bought that same plant from another seller, and it looks a million times better. Not to mention they seem pretty overpriced on most of their hoyas. No more steves leaves for me
Really? That’s interesting. Did you just order Hoyas from them? I’ve never bought anything from them other than Begonias and haven’t had any problems.
@ThePinkTrellis yes, it was just hoyas. I've bought from them quite a few times over the years, but lately, their quality and customer service have gone downhill. I went back and forth with them over my last order for a month until I just decided it wasn't worth the headache dealing with them anymore.
I wish I could post pics here, but it was a hoya icensis with three leaves for $42.50 (normally costs $49.00, but there was a sale) and every leaf had black spots with yellowing around the black spots. And I'm not talking just a few spots, they were covered with these indented black spots which were also surrounded in yellow. But they claim that it's just old damage from propagation. 🙄

I do believe their prices on hoya are high, but the quality has always been good so I thought it was worth it. I usually buy begonia from them and have never had any problems. I guess, I will start crossing my fingers.

Totally too much heat on the begonias. A heat pack should have never been used, with May temps. The seller will hopefully send new ones or refund!
I was surprised to see the heat pack since I knew I didn't need one. He's supposed to ship replacements. I'll keep you guys updated on if it happens :).
The worst damage during shipping I have seen. Kinda your worst nightmare. Wish their was an explanation. Maybe I will stick with Steves Leaves for my begonia.

@@ThePinkTrellis am going to have to re-home my Selloum ASAP. It is just too big now, again, for me to deal with. It is such a pretty plant. I have a Little Hope I think it was called that is a lot like the selloum only way smaller. Different growth. I can move to that spot. Or maybe put my Xanadu in Selloum's place. I even put 6 hooks in the sun porch ceiling for some hanging plants.
