To be honest many untouchables themselves practice untouchability among their fellow caste.

@Sahilrao-123 You are the lier here.Balmikis and pasis are in constant war in each other.Madiga and mala caste fight each other.Pallars being dalit practice untouchability against Parayas .Kheteek being dalit see dholi and bhaga as unclean.
You are dalit that is why you are hiding this to play victim card.
If you want equality why are you taking reservations which is based on inequality.

@Sahilrao-123 Dalits themselves do caste discrimination among themselves.
If casteism cannot be eliminated among Dalits itself it is the problem of Dalits, the dalit groups itself.

Ground reality of casteim is not just gm, obc vs Dalits it is even dalits vs Dalits which has been hidden from the majority of people by Dalit people like you to play victim card.

I’ve had Indian friends growing up tell their parents hate me because of their ways back home also on the TTC a lot of East Asians have the odd idea to invade my space and even tell me a black Canadian man that although I’m already sitting down on the train, I need to immediately get up and give my seat over to them ( usually Indian people that seem to be newcomers). One fellow man even tried to berate me because I should know to give up my seat. I told him “ this is Canada, don’t bring that caste system bs over here, assuming because I’m black I’m supposed to make way for you is comedy at best buddy”.
If I was born with my brown skin in India I would be considered untouchable, would have no rights snd would permanently be stuck under everyone else in perpetuity.

Not sure it's the caste system that you experienced on your train journey so much as self entitlement of India's modern urban population which apart from the rote education they learn in schools are not really taught basic social skills, respect for others and personal space as well as grooming. I'm an Indian American who experienced similar though not exactly the same issues as you did with a roommate who grew up in India.

This was a brilliant interview, show casing something that is often considered taboo to even talk about. My Family lived in the Middle East for a long time, and when I was in high school, returned to South India where my parents were from. The first day of school, a lady from the office came and called out my name. She was holding a register, and asked what caste I was, as my parents didn't fill it in the form. I said, 'I don't know my caste'. Almost 35 years later, I can still hear the loud gasp that came from my classmates....in shock that I didn't know what my caste was. Till then, it didn't matter and my parents didn't feel the need to tell me about that. The lady holding the register looked at me in shock. She said, 'You don't know what caste you are? Go home and ask your Father!' LOL now....but at the time, I was made to feel so bad. When it comes time for marriage, is when the caste system is mentioned the most. I also have to add, that we are Christians. So it doesn't matter what religion you are in India, the original caste that your ancestors were, carries on with you generations later. So happy to see this segment.

And who is responsible for it carrying through even in Christanity or Islam in India. It's a societal issue and not religional. Secondly no scripture ot ancient text ever said birth based caste system. Society just fell off over time and now Hinduism is made to carry the burden of this crap.

It is the people for sure. Even the quota for seats for medical admissions etc is wrong. It should be based on education and help the poor to get educated in the schooling system to be on par for the exams. On another point, people can be educated, but still go back to these practices when facing society for issues like marriage. Will be great when all of this is behind us. Newspapers and Matrimonial sites should also ban the practice of asking people what caste they are. Schools should not ask either.

In 2-3 northern states, even Sc/St group people can have caucasian Gene' mix. But yes majority of Indians are brown skin. I dont know why Canadian media is making it such a big issue?. Because in India people from any caste or religion are given equal rights and access to education. Even general category people in Urban areas do not mind inter-caste or religion marriage by personal consent on both the sides, and this is a thing since 90's...in India. Also, what about reservations given to people from Sc, St, Obc caste groups in India, even when they become rich? I'm not justifying casteism abroad. No matter where I found myself in life, I never looked down my nose on anyone. It hurt me as she referred to her family as an "untouchable.." Castes/unequal power relations are made to keep a certain order in society and to benefit those who create the system and ensure their future generations that same privilege. Humans are terrible to each other. Castes, classism, colorism, racism, nationalism, etc. All moral issues that start in the hearts of man.

Dalit's are also ethnically the same as Indians, unlike African Americans relative to European Americans. Dalits also make up 166 M people. Many are highly educated because of Indian Affirmative action policy.

There are Dalits among doctors, administrative service officers, military officers, government service officials in India. This is largely due to generous reservations in colleges, in administrative services, and in government job postings. So its a lie that Dalit is an inescapable class.
But caste discrimination does still exist in marriages, and in social acceptance, that's a fact.
Also, not sure why or how she faced caste based discrimination in Canada. I have lived in Canada, and later on in USA for 25 years, raised 2 daughters, sent them through high school and college, and the elder one is about to get married to an Indian origin man. Never have we, or our daughters, faced any caste based discrimination from the Indian society, or even any caste related questions. And we are dark skinned Dravidians from south India, where caste is still a big social issue. My point is, the caste system is very much a part of Indian social structure, but when educated Indians move abroad, they leave the caste system behind. So In our experience, caste system is not present in the fabric of the Indian society in north America.

There is a stereotype in India that Brahmins are intelligent and kshatriyas are very good looking. The brahmin people look at me like as if I am a glitch in the system, like how the hell did a low caste guy become better than us? I love seeing that look on their face, plus i have a natural talent in understanding politics, business, economics (things kshatriyas are known for) meanwhile I know a kshatriya guy who is dumb bozo and fat and short. The caste system prevails in non-Hindu communities in India as well. The idea that people do not have the same worth (for whatever reason) was the norm for most of the world for most of history. It's what justified, kingship by birth, lordships, feudal societies and even the very British concept of "knowing one's station". Even when the US Declaration of Independence said that "all men are created equal", that was not the case for black slaves. The bottom line, people are very capable of being very inhumane with other people. Nobody has a monopoly on that form of cruelty. This is why people like Meera are needed - not only to remind us that THIS STILL goes on, but that it's happening in our midst. This country is a work in progress, but it must be understood, work is required for the progress to continue. In the mean time, those of us who never grew up in the caste system, or exposed to it, should keep an eye out for our friends who may have been exposed and labelled by it, and insure they get treated fairly. We cannot build a better country, if its citizens cannot be given a fair shot on what it has to offer, or a chance to contribute more as the heart desires.

I notice this kind of discrimination by some of the poor new comer Indian security people all around the city in pharmacies and all kinds of places. They don’t get enough equity and anti black racism training. They definitely have been known to profile and this is sad because they’re at the bottom of the barrel here. I believe many of these companies like rexall and shoppers drug mart need to give more anti racism and equity trainings to these indo Canadian new comer security guards.

It's better if you fire them, I have heard this before one of my friends had an Indian man as manager and he didn't promote my colleague who is super intelligent, I used to wonder why. Upon knowing him more he told he's from lower caste and manager is Brahman(which is the highest caste according to Hinduism), I complained the HR and explained everything and they fired the manager and prompted my colleague.

In rural societies of Indian, there is no need of any kind of menial work. Even still today. So why there be any untouchable caste ?
Neither ‘caste’ word is Indian nor ‘Zaat/Jaat’ . Zaat is Arabic word having sense of status. None of ancient Indian person have surname to identify caste. It’s Europian tradition. They have surname like Smith, Goldsmith, Gardner, shoemaker etc etc, indicating their ancestor’s work.
Every religion in South Asia have caste system, which was imposed on them by outsiders invaders.

It steals it in everyway possible , while at the same time, taking your skill, imposing backbreaking labor, along with your resources of the land being swiped, along with all your crap, while simultaneously degrading you in every way possibly imagine. I would more be interested in a person who is at the bottom of someones cast figuring a way out from under it. I don’t buy that a person just tries hard & they make it. When you have people doing what they can to make sure that cast system stays in place. Learn basics:
There is no caste system in Hinduism.
    We have VARNA
    Varna means occupation people doing-
-Soldiers of any caste called Kshatriya
-Teacher of any caste called brahmin
    - Business man of any caste called Vaishya
    -Other worker called Shudras
    Just read bhagwat geeta
BG 18.41: The duties of the Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and Shudras-are distributed according to their qualities, in accordance with their guṇas (and not by birth).

For example just because you were born in a Doctors family does not make you a doctor, Krishna have clearly said this? I heard that in Hindu culture there are fours way in finding the truth so that's why Hindu parents DONT force as everyone is seen as a seeker.
    The Four Way are :
🌹Karma Yoga (Doing action around the world like helping poor people)
🌹Bhakti Yoga (Through devotion to any divine you love)
🌹Jnana Yoga(Thought intelligent like the Atheist)
    🌹Kriya yoga(Through Energy by doing Mediation, Yoga(unity))
Clearly showing the freedom you get when you are born in a Hindu culture.

VARNA SYSTEM. This matter of CASTE SYSTEM is used by everyone who wants to harm Sanatan Dharma(famously known as Hinduism), Sanatanis(famously known as Hindus) and Bharat(famously known as India)... who don't want to see the culture spread and that civilization grow... as it got answers to all the flaws out there... and also the growth and strengthening of Bharat.
