    There is no way of doing meditation without being mindful which is one of the main goals of a meditation practice. From a Yoga teacher with 12 years of practice. Namaste!

    I think ive dabbled with both forms, not knowing what i was doing. I was guided through talking to my angels to look for someone to learn from and i found you. Cant wait to learn more from you on the difference.

    This is wonderful. I was skeptical about what this video would contain at first but grinned so huge when you said "that's not meditation." Thank you for the bluntness and honesty. :D

    I studied Satyananda Yoga for 3 years and practice it since around 10 years. In my opinion, what you describe as mindfulness is a type of mediation. Just looking at any beginners mediation, it often starts with watching the breath. While what you describe as mediation, sounds a bit like Yoga Nidra, state of pratyahara. ? I personally feel that the word mindfulness has been more or less introduced by western society to put their own stamp on something that has been existing since thousands of years. As it so often happens now, with so many yogic practices. However, whatever works for each individual, in order to support personal growth. Bring it on, I say. Aum and prem ;o)

      Yeah, I agree. Her description of meditation is becoming aware of Turiya, the state beyond waking, dreaming, and deep sleep. I have gotten glimpses of it with Yoga Nidra (mainly the Satyananda and Amrit styles, but also the Rama version, and to a significantly lesser degree with iRest) and Antar Mouna stages 1 and 5, but I am trying to see if I can get there with mantra meditation, which seems to be the basis of her method. I wonder if it's accessible through Ajapa Japa, which I am going to experiment with soon. 🤔

    We need more research and test to get down to what she is saying. If you were to monitor the body and brain, I believe we would understand more of the principles and actions to the vast differences. I know this is taking place.
    We are getting closer to understanding the real benefits of expanding our consciousness as we learn more about what is consciousness with actual results for living, outside of the spiritual context or verbiage that can cloud the science.
    This will help remove the woo woo and bring people to a different understanding.

      Use what works for you. Each mind and person is different and there is no one-size-fits-all model of meditation. Start with observing the breath.

    You can be mindful without doing meditation. All mindfulness is redirecting your thoughts back to the present moment.

    When ever white folks discuss meditation and/or mindfulness, they should always acknowledge its origins (e.g., India). And, should stop commodifying this beautiful art.

    But isn't focusing on a mantra the same as focusing on breath? a flame? breathing?

    • @jackallen6261
      @jackallen6261 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No I don't think so. Focusing on breath or whatever is different because it is a finite thing. Using a mantra frees the mind to focus on nothing. Focus is just that...focus using a mantra frees the mind to focus on nothing.

    • @orangejjay

      @@jackallen6261 except a mantra is a finite thing. It literally begins and ends with the syllables being used.

      What matters is that you use what works best for you. With meditation, you want to direct the mind to a particular object and observe it with the best of your ability and when the mind gets shaken, don't react ... when the mind wanders, just bring it back to the object. For some, the breath is easy, for others a mantra is easy. Just do what works for you.

      I've used my breath, mantras, and a candle flame (Trataka). I enjoy candle-gazing Trataka, and it's great to develop focus. Since I started watching Emily's videos in the last couple of days, I have been experimenting with purely self-directed (unguided) mantra-based meditations, and there is something there, but I am curious if I can get the same effect from an extended Brahmari pranayama session. I find focusing on the breath to be the most challenging if I am not already relaxed. It helps to do body awareness meditation before full-on breath awareness, and it is also easier to periodically shift your breath awareness. In other words, every other minute notice your breath going in and out from a different section of your body. Start at any of the following and move around: your abdomen, your chest, back of your throat, your sinus cavities, your nostrils, and the sensations on your upper lip. Adding mental counters going backwards as you inhale and exhale also helps.
      In any case, experiment with all three individually. Do them in combination as well. Trataka while focusing on the eyebrow center and mentally repeating the mantra AUM with Ujjayi pranayama is neat for developing one-pointedness of mind. 😁
