In a nutshell: it’s dangerous to care more about community, charisma, etc than what’s actually true.

The tricky part is when charismatic people assert unfalsifiable claims as the truth.
Then it becomes a question of your faith in the dream they’re selling.
And, of course, the other followers are told not to associate with those lacking faith, discouraging you from thinking critically about the group and its doctrines.

Many cults start because their leader believes they have exclusive truth. Some church denominations toe this line too. "We're the most biblical New Testament church." "We're getting back to pure and unadulterated Christianity." "Other denominations try, bless their hearts, but we're the most theologically sound." Many cults have great theological statements but an unhealthy culture when it comes to caring for people as Jesus did.

This verse below really helped me discern between actual scripture and well-meaning people’s “beliefs.” Test the “wisdom” that you are getting against this verse and the rest of scripture and ask yourself if it lines up.
“But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.”

My family left a church that had become cultish. The pastor was very charismatic, replaced staff over time with broken, hurting people who looked to him as their savior. Our family left a couple years ago and the change in our kids is ASTOUNDING!!! We knew something was wrong at that church but could never put a finger on it...and our kids grew up there and we thought things were alright for them (except that only the pastor kids were getting attention from the youth pastor and our youngest hated Sunday school and stopped going). So when we left, their growth has been amazing to see! Like flowers blooming and coming alive. Thank you for making this video! It resonates and is very good information!!

About what you hinted at, 14:00, I’ve noticed that some churches use music to emotionally gaslit people. It’s disturbing. The amount of people I see online who used to go to churches where it’s basically a big concert, eventually left because they found the same feeling when at secular music concerts.
We shouldn’t be using worship music to play with peoples emotions, we’re supposed to be worshiping God. And I’m not saying people can’t feel emotional while worshipping, I’m more so saying that it’s forced on people in a lot of these concert like settings, and that’s wrong.

I grew up in a church that sang the old hymns. By which I mean songs written in the late and early 19th and 20th century. These are not songs that just repeat a touchy feely chorus over and over. Most of the songs had 5-6 long verses that helped explain different aspects of God, purposes of God, the plan of Salvation. And the revealed beauty of God and His salvation moved me deeply with joy. I stopped listening to the Christian radio station in my area because a catchy tune with a strong beat may get my feet tapping as I sing the same few words over and over but it doesn't move me to awe the way the profound verses of the old hymns do.😊

I joined the Mormon church years ago because they have a very clean way of living. No smoking, no alcohol, no gambling etc. I knew that the doctrine was wrong , but a lot of my catholic friends had gone down the path of drunk drugs and divorce and I didn’t want to end up like that. Long story short, I left LDS and am now in the evangelical church. My biblical knowledge has increased significantly and I’m impressed by the biblical knowledge of most church members.

One thing that is hard is many churches act like the only connection that is valid is marriage. If not married, then obviously not God’s will. As someone who was severely abused and neglected, it is pretty disheartening. How does one learn healthy ways to interact with normal relationships, without the pressure of romance? There are a lot of emotional and spiritual orphans out there. (This is not for a lack of trying. Been a Christian for over 30 years trying to find a church to find healthy community with.)

I don’t think many churches understand the difficulty of the situation or how to handle people who are withdrawn or also be introverted. I haven’t seen much support for or fellowship opportunities for single believers. My church is not good at fellowship period, so I went to “the church” other believers from other churches to find fellowship opportunities. Sorry I don’t have a great answer for you.

@BriJenell I have finally found a church I feel welcome and have gotten involved, but relationships are definitely on the shallow side. If we are not to be unequally yoked, how do we find like minded people if not at church, yet churches do nothing to be relevant or welcoming to singles as a whole. I am trying to connect my church to a singles group that has no home. They have been struggling due to lack of stability and accountability. I am trying.

God designed the ultimate model of group fulfillment, the worldwide Church, to meet peoples' needs. It's centered around Christ and His gospel. Following God is the greatest purpose, so people find true fulfillment in serving Him, loving one another, and caring about the world around as Jesus would. Identity is found in Christ, not the world around or a human-appointed leader. Cults (and many other organizations) are sadly Satan's twisted counterfeits of the Church.

The 'heavy shepherding' of the 1970s and 80s was an example.
It's tricky because commitment and accountability are necessary, but these can become distorted into patterns of unhealthy control and dependence.

But it was their hearts that desired a different Christ and waking up to the reality…. Make them walk away. Sad because they don’t want to pursue Christ who is the truth, the way and the life, a glory who is waiting for them.

It's amazing how much i thought i knew about why I'm here, where I'm going, etc... the big questions about life we all have, and how much pride was associated with that "knowledge" when i was LDS... it feels so good to repent for that pride and to be ok trusting God and maybe not having all the "answers". Life's much more of an exciting adventure!! I visit with jws weekly, and i totally see the pride in them that they have the "truth"/"answers". The truth is that what God has in store for His children is much more wonderful than we can even comprehend. And it doesn't require secret handshakes, key words, tokens or any other of a long list of "requirements". His Doctrine is simple: repent, be baptized, and follow Him. That's it! Anything more or less than that cometh of EVIL, as He says Himself. Problem is people don't think that could mean what it does and create a .myriad of checkboxes.

Repeating an answer to a question "What does the LDS church have to do with cults?" asked in a thread.
"For starters, the LDS doctrines depart from orthodox Biblical theology. The LDS also present themselves as the true church with teachings exclusive to the LDS that Christians are missing, which is no surprise since the core of LDS teachings are not Christian.
A good place to start is the teachings centred on Jesus Christ. Hint: Jesus and Lucifer were not brothers, as the LDS teach".
