I found this album at a Goodwill for 89 cents in phenomenal condition and it will forever be one of the best finds I think I could pull off at a friggin' Goodwill. Boggy Home is the best Pixies song that Captain Beefheart never wrote.

This is totally out of left field and on a very old comment, but I think Iggy Pop's New Values LP from 1979 has some great Pixies-esque songs too. The opening track, between the abrasive guitar and the throbbing melodic clean Kim Deal bass. Reminds me so much of Surfer Rosa/Doolittle, but a decade before obviously. Mick's vocals seem to have a little Iggy influence in them. And of course I can't forget to mention the similarities between Stump and Primus several years after, which I think is the most readily apparent.

@@johnm9213 Sitting here now in my COVID-19 quarantine, I just pulled this album up for some quick listening while my wife was napping and now I see this comment. I'll have to dig into that Iggy LP again because when I first listened, I definitely don't think I caught this, but I was probably just busy being disappointed it wasn't Fun House. I think one thing I love that keeps me coming back to Stump is how they, in their own, completely idiosyncratic way, kinda predicted the post rock boom of the 90s? The more I listen to this album, the more I can hear Tortoise and bands like them. Fascinating.

That's pretty much the same story with me. I think I still have that disk packed away somewhere 30-odd years later.
Buffalo and Charleton Heston are my favorites.
My guess, is that someone played it for about 7 seconds and returned it.

This album is the most perfect example of something being shockingly grotesque and shockingly beautiful at the same time. I'm really happy to have discovered this. The band should really be proud of this album, even if they never got the respect or attention they deserved. Rest in Peace Mick.

Masters of rhythm, I once heard John Peel say about them.
This is up there in my top ten greatest albums. Such playfulness in the lyrics, from Mick Lynch, combined with Kev Hopper’s insane fretless bass, Chris Salmon’s harmonic guitar and Rob McKahey’s chaotic drum style.
I became a fan from the moment I beheld ‘how much is the fish’ on The Tube, while convalescing on the sofa as a sick teenager. Their music sounded like how I felt at the time. I’m still sad about Mick’s death, but grateful that they were a part of my life at the time.

Yup, had a copy of Quirk Out in 92, after hearing “Charlton Heston” in 89. Liked it, but only about six Months ago did I appreciate the total f*#£ing Genius of their Music. I too feel sad about Mick’s Death. Feels like He should have known that there are a lot of people that realised His Talent. Imagine a Reunion Tour? My Young Daughter just LOVES Buffalo. Vindication of Genius.

Stump's music is full of contradictions - daft yet poignant, avant-garde yet toe-tappingly catchy, lyrically dense but always direct in its meaning. It shouldn't work and yet it absolutely does. Every time I return to this album it amazes me all over again.

My understanding is that Stump's fanbase thought this was too polished and mainstream? Or is this a historical simplification? This album is truly out there in the best way possible. Hard to see why anyone would be disappointed by this.

Kim, the backlash came from their tune Charlton Heston getting play on MTV. I will never understand why fans feel like they "own" a band and to hell with them for 'selling out'. That is just stupid. CAKE has a tune about this problem called Rock and Roll Lifestyle. Cheers and happy new year!

I used to get soooo baked in the early 90s, pop this album in, and float away. And then... I forgot all about it for 30 years.
But tonight, literally cleaning out my closet, I rediscovered that ancient cassette album, brought to you in Dolby Audio by Chrysalis Records, and so much came rushing back. Well it did after finding this post on YT, of course, since I no longer have a method to play cassette audio.
Of course the music, but also everything attached to it... Feelings of hormone-induced sadness and longing, the peacefulness of zoning out to music unlike anything else, the revelation of being and feeling weird and being OK with it.
This is fantastic. It's the best night of my year so far, by far. I'm so happy.

I have only found out Mick has passed. Really sad news, as I always loved the band. Most singers you see perform and produce a carbon copy of there songs with or without band accompanying them, but in terms of delivery they are static with no dynamics. Mick is there with the charismatic performers that give or gave so much more, emotion, tension, humour, a physical energy as they prowl and own the stage. He is with Leonard Cohen, Damien Rice, Nick Cave, Iggy Pop a truly great artist. I feel honoured to have seen him perform, thanks for your music Mick.

A wonderful album. The tune Bone is an indictment on violence; it takes us through creation, re-enacts the ape murder scene from 2001 - A Space Odyssey, and ends with nuclear destruction. Pretty intense stuff from a group of players that many dismiss as merely a joke band. And this is just scratching the surface.

When I bought this rare pearl vinyl, many years ago, in a weekly market in my home town (Plasencia/Extremadura/Spain), I did'nt know Stump yet. I bought it for several reasons, first of all, its original and beautifull front cover. After listening it, I was excited and amazed about this music (the rare combination of atonal music with folk music in some songs). The song "Alcohol" was incredible in my first listening, with that rhythmic cadence of bass and electric guitar and sound effects!!!. Summing up, a rare vinyl treasure which I already keep in my music collection of vinyls, CDs and cassettes...¡¡Greetings to all of you an sorry for my English!! ;)

Stump has been in my life for close to a decade now, but I’m back on this video because I’ve been reading Flann O’Brien’s The Third Policeman and a character keeps describing situations and events as “a _____ pancake.” It made my brain do a triple take and whaddya know-the album is dedicated to Flann O’Brien and named after the phrase the character says!

Just what the Dr ordered...! Nice moniker by the way...!(is that some twisted connection to Les Claypool's bass sound I wonder..?)

I do not own a physical copy of any Stump albums, unfortunately. In my time of searching, I have been able to find UK copies on places like eBay, though. Get them whenever you can. Buffalo does not belong on this album, and I'm not sure why they would exclude Eager Bereaver.

This is the only audio of "Eager Bereaver" I have been able to find on the web. Many thanks!
Any chance I could get a copy of that song off you? It wasn't included in the US release of the LP.

I love all of you who knew stump in their time. I didn't, got recommended the album by a fantastic cartoonist. Maybe it's wrong but I don't care about Mick or any of the other guy's other projects, I just love this album specifically. Don't know what else to say. Love that we all love this beautiful stuff.

Well,....no. This has nothing to do with Beefheart. Indeed the Band themselves didn't like to be compared to the Captain, because his avantgarde Madness is based on American Blues. Stump's music isn't.

    • @PrimusSucksOnThis
      @PrimusSucksOnThis  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

The reason is most likely because you have the US version, which for some reason excluded that track and replaced it with Buffalo, an older track from a previous release
