Story 3 broke my heart... man, how can anyone hear a person say "i've been struggling to get back the custody of my kids and i'm disabled" and think "oh, she can be in my downline", i hope that that rep is aware of how unfair she was :(
My heart broke for Moth (the 15-year-old). Another piece of advice is to make sure, if you can, that your dad can't access any money you have (e.g., college fund, trust fund, savings account). It's hard because you're not an adult yet, but hopefully you can talk with your mom or another family member you trust (e.g., sometimes grandparents are the ones who've set up college funds or trust funds and might be able to control them). Some people in MLMs take money that was set aside for their child's future and invest it in the MLM in the hope that they'll make a profit. It's so sad to think about, and I really hope your father wouldn't be one of those people, but like Hannah always says, MLMs can make someone do things they wouldn't otherwise do.
Literally when we went wfh they were like ‘oh please say good morning on teams’ literally replied with ‘bitch, I don’t say good morning in the office. Why the fuck would I over teams’ in case you can’t tell no longer work there but just yeah that was a huge no from me. We aren’t kids talking a roll call 🙄🙄
The woman who stole from the nonprofit underscores a point I've seen over and over. Being in an MLM can be exactly like a gambling addiction. Money is wasted, and more is stolen, over and over, always with the justification that this time, it will pay off. This time, I'll make it big--and then it will all be okay, I'll pay it all back and have more left over. And in both cases, it never pans out. The hole just gets deeper.
I feel so sad for the 15 year old - don’t feel responsible for getting your dad out of an mlm, make sure your mom knows about your concerns and go from there.
idk if moth will see this, but if you do, I'm also a teen (16) who watches anti mlm content and it made me happy that other teens are as well. your situation is really heartbreaking, and I hope you can get the help you need from your Mom. Im slightly older than you, and starting to deal with college and stuff, so I'm gonna suggest to you, if you can, make sure any college money/trust fund money is in a bank account that your dad can't access, mlms often unfortunately take advantage of that, talk to your mom about that. other than that, unfortunately you might have to just wait. please remember, none of this is your fault or your responsibility, but I totally understand you worrying about it, he's your dad. most people do leave mlms however, and it sounds like he's alright questioning the scam of it. you are so smart to be learning about these so young, and I'm sure you'll do good in life.
yes! I'm also a teen, and i love how she treated it, not invalidating them at all because of their age, and explaining that even though it's hard to deal with, nothing that happens in your family when you are a child is really your fault.
It's so wild that even in the CHATS there's no negativity - in the group chats I'm in with actual small business friends (freelance artists/illustrators with small merch and print lines) we're always yelling about something or other business related including but not limited to algorithms, frustrating clients, manufacturing costs, exhaustion from going to events/fairs.. etc The toxic positivity of these MLMS are so awful for REAL growth and discussing/solving actual issues people deal with. Or even just having a place to vent and feel less alone!

When she asked 'who has to spend money to work at your job?' I automatically went, TEACHERS! 🤣 I don't even want to know how much of my own money I spent on my classroom when I was a teacher.
This especially art teachers. I remember hearing from HS to college my art teachers saying they had to pay for supplies for their students, and in college where everyone had their own style, it gets costly fast!
My SIL was a teacher in a wealthy district and still had to buy her own stuff. Come Christmas she gets a bunch of super fancy gift baskets. Any two of these baskets would’ve paid for the supplies. She’d say as much at the beginning of the year and again before the holiday break. She’s been retired for 15 years and still has bubble bath and candles, in spite of being the bath with candles type. One time, I bought a package of dry erase markers as a thank you for a professional favor. She cried. Maybe the parents think kids just learn better when it’s causing the teacher financial strain?

I would imagine a lot of the dad's anger also comes from the fact that he's not able to provide for his family. He's desperate. It's clear that Moth has a really good heart, evidenced by their eagerness to get out and get a job at 15. Since they don't watch movies during the week because of school, that means they're willing to give up their weekends just to work to make money for the family. As an ex-high school teacher, this absolutely breaks my heart to tiny pieces.

To Moth, as a stubborn and defensive guy myself, I think I know where your dad is at. I haven't ever been in an MLM but I've made my share of bad choices and ultimately I had to find my own way out of them. You've made it known to him that you think it's a bad decision and anything more will probably just push him into more of a corner. When you attack the "business" he's just going to perceive it as a personal attack that he's dumb or doesn't know how to take care of his family, and likely part of why he's so defensive is because he already knows he might have screwed up. My advice is to neither support nor denigrate it moving forward. A situation like the movie night, just make it known you're sad you didn't get to spend the time with him without attacking his "business". He'll figure it out on his own, especially now that he's got it nagging at the back of his head that it's probably a stupid thing he's doing. I agree though it wouldn't hurt to talk to your mom about it, you don't want him to burn through the family money in the process. But ultimately that's not your responsibility, you're obviously mature for your age, but you shouldn't own any responsibility in any of this.
My experience was similar - after 10 years in Mary Kay (I’m embarrassed to even say that) - I quit and anyone my level or above (I was a director) dropped me the minute I quit - supposed friends for 10 years! It broke my heart. I actually thought some of them were friends. I still feel like an idiot 15 years later. So sad to continue to see this cycle over and over.
10 years is quite a while, what tipped you over the line.. to start considering leaving if I may ask?... is it very similar to other ex-huns? it might help people to see what helped you to break throught the manipulation?
@@Acinnn it took me almost 10 years to reach director status, then I was part of the ‘big girls club’ and I saw that other directors were lying left and right about soooooo many things! It was truly eye opening to be at that top level and see things how they really are. I tried to continue, I’d invested so much of my life into it, but I just couldn’t. Here is a lie I love - director has a gorgeous large house built, claims MK paid for it. I find out that this directors mother left her a strip mall that was making pretty decent rental income, so that’s what was paying for the big house. Another lie: my adopted director and her daughter and I think even one other director all worked basically full-time for her husband at his doctors office. His business was supporting 3 directors!

Lemme put it this way. I work for a GOVERNMENT CONTRACTOR. We have team calls. We are RARELY required to have our cameras on. And even when we are, we are allowed to use the blur feature so they can tell we are there but we don't have to be on camera. So. If your upline is forcing you to be on camera at all times when you have good reason not to be.. take that into consideration
I think it's super telling that they use words like 'industry' and 'competition' to refer to other MLMs selling completely different products, rather than the hair industry or the supplement industry, etc. It really shows that they're in a world of their own and not legitimate competition in the consumer market

Oh my goodness the first story got me when the writer wanted to make her husband a priority and her up line was upset and complained that she wasn’t making her MLM a priority. So sad. Family should always come first. This hits so close to home. My MLM destroyed my marriage and family. What’s even more sick about it all, they rope you in with the whole “do it for your family” ploy. A lot peoples “why” is their family, yet it’s all being ripped away.

Wow the story from the 15 year old hit me right in the gut. I watched MLMs ruin my parents' 40 year marriage over about a 15 year span starting at that age. It's so sad! I wish I could give that young person a hug.
The felony story reminds me of gambling addiction. Digging yourself into a hole, stealing money while telling yourself you’ll make it all back and replace the money before anyone notices.
Regarding the 4th story: my parents were involved with Amway when my brothers were teens (I was just a kid) and they always mentioned to my parents to be careful because that was a pyramid scheme. Yes, they said pyramid scheme. At first, my parents tried to defend it, but later on they left Amway and when I asked my mom about her upline - because I thought they were friends -, my mom got mad and told me to never mention that evil woman again 😂
Story 4 just breaks my heart, especially as a parent who was in an mlm. Mlm’s unfortunately have a way to pull people in with the illusion that you can put your family first, then once you’re in, you’re told that you have to work more, work harder now so that eventually you can spend more time with family. I spent many nights “with my family” while on my phone sending texts and scheduling appts. My kids were much younger, so they didn’t share outright that I wasn’t spending enough time with them, but they clearly saw that I was not as attentive as I should have been. I’m sure he truly believes that he’s trying hard to build his business in order to better support his family, so he may think that his child and wife just don’t understand what he’s sacrificing for them, and may be feeling resentful. And the mlm will do what they can to separate their people from anyone who does not support them. If his wife can possibly get through to him by gently pointing out how lucky that he is that his 15 year old still wants to spend time with him, and ultimately help him see for himself how this is damaging his relationship with his family. Sorry this was so long!!!
I really feel for him honestly, many men specially feel that it's their job to support the family (or at least they want to be able to give their family something), so it must really hurt to not have a job and be a stay at home dad and here he has finally find a way to give something to his family if he's succesful. I really hope the wife can talk to him and maybe they could together look at other (real) jobs that he could do, if that's what he wants instead of wanting tine and money on this which just ruins families instead of bringing them together.

I can relate to the 15 yr old. When I was a teenager I understand their worries when it comes to the finances. Growing up I had to go without meals and sometimes a place to sleep bc my mom couldn’t afford it. Once I was old enough I got a job so I can buy food for myself and have enough money for school clothes and supplies and to be able to afford having a phone and a decently reliable car so my mom wouldn’t have to worry about my transportation or my physical well being. To the 15 yr old and anyone else living in a situation anywhere similar things do get better. I’m now 20, with an apartment, a decent paying job and going to start school in June. My mom is finally starting to get help for her mental and physical health. No matter what you’re going through any step forward to bettering yourself is progress. Hoping the best for everyone who reads this comment.
My mom has almost fallen for the vague "job opportunity" ads when she was desperate for work. Luckily she asked me what I thought about them and I always said "NO, ITS A SCAM!!"
The poor teenager broke my heart! From one MLM kid to another: it’s not your fault. Your dad is so stressed and if he takes it out on you, remember it’s not your fault. It can get so hard some days watching your parent struggle, but take it day by day and you’ll get through it ❤️
To the person concerned about their dad, I agree that he is projecting his anger and frustration on you, but also note that this is not your fault and you do not deserve to be treated this way. Just because you are "child" and he is "parent" doesn't put you in a place where you deserve to be treated this way. You are totally okay in saying, "I can see you are frustrated about this subject, but please do not take your anger out on me."
I would recommend that the 15 year old speak to their mom. The mom obviously is open to the conversation and maybe the two of you can come up with a plan.

I seem to recall a comment about what hiring managers see when an MLM is listed on a resume - something like "this person does not have good critical thinking skills or make good financial decisions", not so much that the person "fell for a scam"

Man i worked in a law firm and the way you described the info filtering about not saying negative stuff.. Was just like that place. They made employees feel like the problem and singled them out if they werent perfect or said anything slightly negative. They asked for feedback bur took none of it. Had a horrible harrassing micromanaging drama starting female 'manager' that they knew was an issue but keep her there cause she lies and says its the employee who's the problem. Ugh

In case Moth is watching, I’m really sorry you’ve had this happening to you, because I understand how bad it feels to be put aside because of a job (and in this case worse because it’s an MLM) but keep being amazing, I can tell you’re really smart and kind because you’re concerned about your family and while yes, you’re the child and you shouldn’t worry, children still do; I think that just showing your concern in the best way possible to someone as you did here (doesn’t have to be your dad because he may be rude to you) is doing a lot, because at least you can vent and see a different point of view. Went to a wedding show yesterday and I have a game where I count how many MLMs I can spot. I got 4 this time!! Pure Romance, Lipsense, Color Street, and I'm blanking on the 4th. I literally went to every booth signing up for their prizes but specifically avoided those ones cause I didn't wanna win a free party or some shit 🤣🤣
The one where they refused to record the zoom calls - my theory: they want to make sure you’re engaged and active (and busy on the call) whereas if you do it on your own, at a slower pace, your critical thinking might kick in and you might start to google stuff and get the harsh truth

That sounds like American income Life. It IS an MLM. I tried it. For like a few years I recruited people to come in for an “interview”, which was an MLM pitch. I got my insurance license, only to have it revoked because I had past criminal charge. It was a designated misdemeanor but the sheriff originally tried to make it a felony. I was told that if I’d been convicted of a felony, I couldn’t, but since I’d never been convicted of the felony, I SPENT THE MONEY, studied, and worked my tail off learning about life insurance! Wasted. The fine print said that if you’ve ever been charged (convicted or not) of a felony. You go into it thinking it’s an “interview”.
I know a bunch of MONAT huns from my hometown that went to Q sciences and taking their teams with them. It’s sad that they left because their teams struggled just to jump into another non-sustainable MLM. It’s like they almost get it…and then nope.
Cringe confession time: after I got out of beachBody I still didn’t know what an MLM was and had it on my resume for a minimum of two years because it was relevant to what I was studying in school (exercise). I will never live that down. 😂
from what i see, beachbody makes a big effort to make themselves appear as a normal fitness program and stuff. maybe not as much as pampered chef (i had no idea that was an mlm for years even after i found anti mlm) but probably more so than arbonne and monat for instance. at least thats how it feels to me. most of the mlm ads i see on youtube are for beach body
I find it so interesting that the main pitch is “flexible hours” and “do it on your free time”. However, you are required to be at a live call and you are constantly told you are just not putting in the time. smh.
I recently checked the LinkedIn profile of a job applicant for a senior position, under my management. In flowery language he described the numerous jobs he's had over 9 years, averaging about 11 months in each. Then came the creme de la creme - He took a 3 year break to "co-parent his children, and work from home as The Marketing Partner for a major health supplements supplier" - his exact description. His "duties" screamed MLM. I'd never heard of the Company, but found it online and, sure enough, I was right. He said he was ready to go back to full-time in-house employment, so I guess he was scammed by the MLM. Naturally, I Emailed to say I had a more experienced applicant etc. It's sad that so many people don't smell a rat when they are sucked into these MLM's. It takes enormous confidence, drive and ruthlessness to succeed in that field.
I remember the job recruiter note on MLMs on resumes! I recall the recruiter also said that being in an MLM /AND/ including it in a resume hints at an inability to look at statistics/finances objectively and an inability to manage finances/budgets. I would also argue that unlike actual jobs, there are very very few if any actual transferrable skills from an MLM to the "dreaded" 9-5.
I had never heard of 31 bags sooo I went to the website and sure enough, you can become a consultant or an inside buyer. Thanks for showing us how to understand MLM's.
Moth’s story reminds me of an MLM my cousins recently got involved in, I think it’s called World Financial Group (WFG for short)? It’s an insurance service MLM that the reps claims to be “financial educators” - so misleading!! And go figure that all the reps, or “CEOs” as their profiles say, don’t have the company name listed ANYWHERE. A deep dive on these “financial services” MLMs would be amazing, it’s pretty slim pickings out there for info on them
This is eerily similar to what happens in toxic churches. "Hide anything bad, don't ask forbidden questions, pretend everything is perfect to draw in more people to suffer...SMILE!" 😵💫👀
I’d love to hear your take on time share people. Their tactics are so close to MLMs it’s crazy. Always claiming you “won” a trip to get you to come listen to their pitch. Being your family, the pitch is only 2 hours, no big deal, etc. It’s so frustrating and sneaky.
The second story is so yikes, imagine going to jail for your mlm "business opportunity".... She would've been better off selling drugs or something, at least that would've put the $3000 in her own pockets before sending her to jail 😅
Hi Hannah. Wanted to give you a little tidbit. My daughter's school had a carnival at her school this past weekend. Guess who was there...an Arbonne Rep. She didn't try to sell to me, thank goodness...but she had some edible cookie dough. It was HORRIBLE. There was another booth next to her that looked like it was an MLM as well, but unfortunately I have forgotten the name. I didn't recognize it from the current list of MLMs, so it might have not been, but it gave me MLM vibes.

Your kitties remind me of one of my coworkers - our team has a weekly meeting and some of the other odd-hour workers have to tune in from home. One's kitty had a LOT to say and it's become an in-joke that we need his opinion to finalize anything.
The hypocrisy of MLM’s touting “be your own boss” and “make your own schedule” and “do as little or as much as you want too”, and then hound you non-stop to be in chat groups and to join zoom calls at all hours of the day. Sounds like you are still not “Your own boss”.
So much heartbreak here. For that lovely 15 year old, I suggest you just let him know you love him. Love like that can plant a special seed that is only possible through love. On the story with the Mom who had the brain injury, the heartlessness the MLM rep displayed, there will never be enough scorn to heap out. Derailing her at a critical juncture might qualify as evil. Lastly, my company records all of our call where they share information or training so we can rewatch later or if work made us miss it, we can catch up.
Story 5. I did not know that LinkedIn prohibits prospecting for MLM. I’m going to go double check this. I have been approached by several MLM rep/consumers on LinkedIn

The person in the first story wanting the recording was a perfect analogy for disability accommodations. No one wants to help people be able to do their best. Maybe they would have stayed if the upline had recorded the call!
the camera-on zoom calls aren't just an mlm thing, ive seen it before, esp with bad teachers and bosses during the pandemic. i think it's a control thing. they need to be able to see you watching them, and any complaints is a questioning of their authority. it's come up enough that there have been multiple people outside of mlm circles experiencing this and then finding ways to embarrass or annoy the person hosting the call. one person had a zoom meeting during their chemotherapy and were forced to be on camera, so they made themselves look especially sick and had their nurse turn up the audio on the monitors so the beeping would keep bringing them up on screen. another person was forced to join a call while pumping breast milk (which went as well as it sounded) and a kid in high school added a glitch effect filter that kept distracting the teacher and other students, especially when they began sneaking in memes through the filter.
You know what’s really sad? For the amount of money people spend on these MLMs, they could start their own actual small business and have a good chance at making a real profit all for themselves.
If I see an MLM on someone’s resume I literally throw it in the trash. Also have seen lots of doctors selling mlm products in their offices and when I do I immediately cancel my appointment.

The woman who stole from the nonprofit underscores a point I've seen over and over. Being in an MLM can be exactly like a gambling addiction. Money is wasted, and more is stolen, over and over, always with the justification that this time, it will pay off. This time, I'll make it big--and then it will all be okay, I'll pay it all back and have more left over. And in both cases, it never pans out. The hole just gets deeper.

Im slightly older than you, and starting to deal with college and stuff, so I'm gonna suggest to you, if you can, make sure any college money/trust fund money is in a bank account that your dad can't access, mlms often unfortunately take advantage of that, talk to your mom about that. other than that, unfortunately you might have to just wait. please remember, none of this is your fault or your responsibility, but I totally understand you worrying about it, he's your dad. most people do leave mlms however, and it sounds like he's alright questioning the scam of it. you are so smart to be learning about these so young, and I'm sure you'll do good in life.

My SIL was a teacher in a wealthy district and still had to buy her own stuff. Come Christmas she gets a bunch of super fancy gift baskets. Any two of these baskets would’ve paid for the supplies. She’d say as much at the beginning of the year and again before the holiday break. She’s been retired for 15 years and still has bubble bath and candles, in spite of being the bath with candles type. One time, I bought a package of dry erase markers as a thank you for a professional favor. She cried.

I would imagine a lot of the dad's anger also comes from the fact that he's not able to provide for his family. He's desperate. It's clear that Moth has a really good heart, evidenced by their eagerness to get out and get a job at 15. Since they don't watch movies during the week because of school, that means they're willing to give up their weekends just to work to make money for the family. As an ex-high school teacher, this absolutely breaks my heart to tiny pieces.

To Moth, as a stubborn and defensive guy myself, I think I know where your dad is at. I haven't ever been in an MLM but I've made my share of bad choices and ultimately I had to find my own way out of them. You've made it known to him that you think it's a bad decision and anything more will probably just push him into more of a corner. When you attack the "business" he's just going to perceive it as a personal attack that he's dumb or doesn't know how to take care of his family, and likely part of why he's so defensive is because he already knows he might have screwed up. My advice is to neither support nor denigrate it moving forward. A situation like the movie night, just make it known you're sad you didn't get to spend the time with him without attacking his "business". He'll figure it out on his own, especially now that he's got it nagging at the back of his head that it's probably a stupid thing he's doing. I agree though it wouldn't hurt to talk to your mom about it, you don't want him to burn through the family money in the process. But ultimately that's not your responsibility, you're obviously mature for your age, but you shouldn't own any responsibility in any of this.
My experience was similar - after 10 years in Mary Kay (I’m embarrassed to even say that) - I quit and anyone my level or above (I was a director) dropped me the minute I quit - supposed friends for 10 years! It broke my heart. I actually thought some of them were friends. I still feel like an idiot 15 years later. So sad to continue to see this cycle over and over.
I tried Avon for a time, but 4 months in, the only sales I was making was enough to keep my website open and paid off the starter kit. I gave up.

@@Acinnn it took me almost 10 years to reach director status, then I was part of the ‘big girls club’ and I saw that other directors were lying left and right about soooooo many things! It was truly eye opening to be at that top level and see things how they really are. I tried to continue, I’d invested so much of my life into it, but I just couldn’t. Here is a lie I love - director has a gorgeous large house built, claims MK paid for it. I find out that this directors mother left her a strip mall that was making pretty decent rental income, so that’s what was paying for the big house. Another lie: my adopted director and her daughter and I think even one other director all worked basically full-time for her husband at his doctors office. His business was supporting 3 directors!

Lemme put it this way.
I work for a GOVERNMENT CONTRACTOR. We have team calls. We are RARELY required to have our cameras on. And even when we are, we are allowed to use the blur feature so they can tell we are there but we don't have to be on camera.
So. If your upline is forcing you to be on camera at all times when you have good reason not to be.. take that into consideration
I think it's super telling that they use words like 'industry' and 'competition' to refer to other MLMs selling completely different products, rather than the hair industry or the supplement industry, etc. It really shows that they're in a world of their own and not legitimate competition in the consumer market

Oh my goodness the first story got me when the writer wanted to make her husband a priority and her up line was upset and complained that she wasn’t making her MLM a priority. So sad. Family should always come first. This hits so close to home. My MLM destroyed my marriage and family. What’s even more sick about it all, they rope you in with the whole “do it for your family” ploy. A lot peoples “why” is their family, yet it’s all being ripped away.

Wow the story from the 15 year old hit me right in the gut. I watched MLMs ruin my parents' 40 year marriage over about a 15 year span starting at that age. It's so sad! I wish I could give that young person a hug.
The felony story reminds me of gambling addiction. Digging yourself into a hole, stealing money while telling yourself you’ll make it all back and replace the money before anyone notices.
Regarding the 4th story: my parents were involved with Amway when my brothers were teens (I was just a kid) and they always mentioned to my parents to be careful because that was a pyramid scheme. Yes, they said pyramid scheme. At first, my parents tried to defend it, but later on they left Amway and when I asked my mom about her upline - because I thought they were friends -, my mom got mad and told me to never mention that evil woman again 😂
Story 4 just breaks my heart, especially as a parent who was in an mlm. Mlm’s unfortunately have a way to pull people in with the illusion that you can put your family first, then once you’re in, you’re told that you have to work more, work harder now so that eventually you can spend more time with family. I spent many nights “with my family” while on my phone sending texts and scheduling appts. My kids were much younger, so they didn’t share outright that I wasn’t spending enough time with them, but they clearly saw that I was not as attentive as I should have been. I’m sure he truly believes that he’s trying hard to build his business in order to better support his family, so he may think that his child and wife just don’t understand what he’s sacrificing for them, and may be feeling resentful. And the mlm will do what they can to separate their people from anyone who does not support them. If his wife can possibly get through to him by gently pointing out how lucky that he is that his 15 year old still wants to spend time with him, and ultimately help him see for himself how this is damaging his relationship with his family. Sorry this was so long!!!
I really feel for him honestly, many men specially feel that it's their job to support the family (or at least they want to be able to give their family something), so it must really hurt to not have a job and be a stay at home dad and here he has finally find a way to give something to his family if he's succesful. I really hope the wife can talk to him and maybe they could together look at other (real) jobs that he could do, if that's what he wants instead of wanting tine and money on this which just ruins families instead of bringing them together.

I can relate to the 15 yr old. When I was a teenager I understand their worries when it comes to the finances. Growing up I had to go without meals and sometimes a place to sleep bc my mom couldn’t afford it. Once I was old enough I got a job so I can buy food for myself and have enough money for school clothes and supplies and to be able to afford having a phone and a decently reliable car so my mom wouldn’t have to worry about my transportation or my physical well being. To the 15 yr old and anyone else living in a situation anywhere similar things do get better. I’m now 20, with an apartment, a decent paying job and going to start school in June. My mom is finally starting to get help for her mental and physical health. No matter what you’re going through any step forward to bettering yourself is progress. Hoping the best for everyone who reads this comment.
My mom has almost fallen for the vague "job opportunity" ads when she was desperate for work. Luckily she asked me what I thought about them and I always said "NO, ITS A SCAM!!"

To the person concerned about their dad, I agree that he is projecting his anger and frustration on you, but also note that this is not your fault and you do not deserve to be treated this way. Just because you are "child" and he is "parent" doesn't put you in a place where you deserve to be treated this way. You are totally okay in saying, "I can see you are frustrated about this subject, but please do not take your anger out on me."
I would recommend that the 15 year old speak to their mom. The mom obviously is open to the conversation and maybe the two of you can come up with a plan.

Man i worked in a law firm and the way you described the info filtering about not saying negative stuff.. Was just like that place. They made employees feel like the problem and singled them out if they werent perfect or said anything slightly negative. They asked for feedback bur took none of it. Had a horrible harrassing micromanaging drama starting female 'manager' that they knew was an issue but keep her there cause she lies and says its the employee who's the problem. Ugh

In case Moth is watching, I’m really sorry you’ve had this happening to you, because I understand how bad it feels to be put aside because of a job (and in this case worse because it’s an MLM) but keep being amazing, I can tell you’re really smart and kind because you’re concerned about your family and while yes, you’re the child and you shouldn’t worry, children still do; I think that just showing your concern in the best way possible to someone as you did here (doesn’t have to be your dad because he may be rude to you) is doing a lot, because at least you can vent and see a different point of view. That sounds like American income Life. It IS an MLM. I tried it. For like a few years I recruited people to come in for an “interview”, which was an MLM pitch. I got my insurance license, only to have it revoked because I had past criminal charge. It was a designated misdemeanor but the sheriff originally tried to make it a felony. I was told that if I’d been convicted of a felony, I couldn’t, but since I’d never been convicted of the felony, I SPENT THE MONEY, studied, and worked my tail off learning about life insurance! Wasted. The fine print said that if you’ve ever been charged (convicted or not) of a felony. You go into it thinking it’s an “interview”.
I know a bunch of MONAT huns from my hometown that went to Q sciences and taking their teams with them. It’s sad that they left because their teams struggled just to jump into another non-sustainable MLM. It’s like they almost get it…and then nope.
Cringe confession time: after I got out of beachBody I still didn’t know what an MLM was and had it on my resume for a minimum of two years because it was relevant to what I was studying in school (exercise).

from what i see, beachbody makes a big effort to make themselves appear as a normal fitness program and stuff. maybe not as much as pampered chef (i had no idea that was an mlm for years even after i found anti mlm) but probably more so than arbonne and monat for instance. at least thats how it feels to me. most of the mlm ads i see on youtube are for beach body
I find it so interesting that the main pitch is “flexible hours” and “do it on your free time”. However, you are required to be at a live call and you are constantly told you are just not putting in the time. smh.

I recently checked the LinkedIn profile of a job applicant for a senior position, under my management. In flowery language he described the numerous jobs he's had over 9 years, averaging about 11 months in each. Then came the creme de la creme - He took a 3 year break to "co-parent his children, and work from home as The Marketing Partner for a major health supplements supplier" - his exact description. His "duties" screamed MLM. I'd never heard of the Company, but found it online and, sure enough, I was right. He said he was ready to go back to full-time in-house employment, so I guess he was scammed by the MLM.
Naturally, I Emailed to say I had a more experienced applicant etc.
It's sad that so many people don't smell a rat when they are sucked into these MLM's. It takes enormous confidence, drive and ruthlessness to succeed in that field.
I remember the job recruiter note on MLMs on resumes! I recall the recruiter also said that being in an MLM /AND/ including it in a resume hints at an inability to look at statistics/finances objectively and an inability to manage finances/budgets. I would also argue that unlike actual jobs, there are very very few if any actual transferrable skills from an MLM to the "dreaded" 9-5.
I had never heard of 31 bags sooo I went to the website and sure enough, you can become a consultant or an inside buyer. Thanks for showing us how to understand MLM's.

Moth’s story reminds me of an MLM my cousins recently got involved in, I think it’s called World Financial Group (WFG for short)? It’s an insurance service MLM that the reps claims to be “financial educators” - so misleading!! And go figure that all the reps, or “CEOs” as their profiles say, don’t have the company name listed ANYWHERE.
A deep dive on these “financial services” MLMs would be amazing, it’s pretty slim pickings out there for info on them

She didn't try to sell to me, thank goodness...but she had some edible cookie dough. It was HORRIBLE.
There was another booth next to her that looked like it was an MLM as well, but unfortunately I have forgotten the name. I didn't recognize it from the current list of MLMs, so it might have not been, but it gave me MLM vibes.

Your kitties remind me of one of my coworkers - our team has a weekly meeting and some of the other odd-hour workers have to tune in from home. One's kitty had a LOT to say and it's become an in-joke that we need his opinion to finalize anything.
The hypocrisy of MLM’s touting “be your own boss” and “make your own schedule” and “do as little or as much as you want too”, and then hound you non-stop to be in chat groups and to join zoom calls at all hours of the day. Sounds like you are still not “Your own boss”.
So much heartbreak here. For that lovely 15 year old, I suggest you just let him know you love him. Love like that can plant a special seed that is only possible through love. On the story with the Mom who had the brain injury, the heartlessness the MLM rep displayed, there will never be enough scorn to heap out. Derailing her at a critical juncture might qualify as evil. Lastly, my company records all of our call where they share information or training so we can rewatch later or if work made us miss it, we can catch up.
Story 5. I did not know that LinkedIn prohibits prospecting for MLM. I’m going to go double check this. I have been approached by several MLM rep/consumers on LinkedIn

You’re so well thought out and you validated her feelings and are so sweet yet you are professional/mature enough to if by chance, her parents saw this, they couldn’t even be upset with you. You hit the nail on the head, his anger is most likely derived from his own irritation at the company.

The person in the first story wanting the recording was a perfect analogy for disability accommodations. No one wants to help people be able to do their best. Maybe they would have stayed if the upline had recorded the call!
the camera-on zoom calls aren't just an mlm thing, ive seen it before, esp with bad teachers and bosses during the pandemic. i think it's a control thing. they need to be able to see you watching them, and any complaints is a questioning of their authority. it's come up enough that there have been multiple people outside of mlm circles experiencing this and then finding ways to embarrass or annoy the person hosting the call. one person had a zoom meeting during their chemotherapy and were forced to be on camera, so they made themselves look especially sick and had their nurse turn up the audio on the monitors so the beeping would keep bringing them up on screen. another person was forced to join a call while pumping breast milk (which went as well as it sounded) and a kid in high school added a glitch effect filter that kept distracting the teacher and other students, especially when they began sneaking in memes through the filter.
You know what’s really sad? For the amount of money people spend on these MLMs, they could start their own actual small business and have a good chance at making a real profit all for themselves.
I don’t know why employers and even coworkers think that being mean to someone or setting them up to fail is how they keep employees.
If I see an MLM on someone’s resume I literally throw it in the trash.
Also have seen lots of doctors selling mlm products in their offices and when I do I immediately cancel my appointment.
The more I watch these the more parallels I draw between MLM huns and drug addicts. They become truely addicted to thier MLM
