I've paid $1200 for a Neil Patel marketing course (Which didn't pay off) yet doing a udemy a $50 course on NodeJS or ReactJS or product management has paid infinitely off more for me in the end. That said, I've also paid 6k for a AI / Data Science Bootcamp. Everything has a cost / benefit to it and you just have to weigh things carefully.
Prior to the data science bootcamp I had not paid anything close to that much for anything but 1) I was already a developer and entrepreneur at that point (So I could get a job fairly easily compared to others who would've just taken the course by itself) 2) It was and is a burgeoning industry 3) It would have and did immediately increase my capacity to earn more money in the short term and finally 4) I had chosen my next startup to be AI related. And a year later here I am with a VC backed AI startup.

I have a brother that is trapped inside this kind of cults. I've tried several times helping him out but most of the times i felt powerless. The most disturbing thing about this is not the money wasted buying those courses, but the mental scar that those toxic comunities leave and the psychological consequences. Now my brother has no friends, he is 24/7 in his room following those courses and he lost touch with everyone, family included, he spent lots of money chasing the "6 figures skill" . I moved to another city and he completely deleted me, in more than 3 years i have no communication with him because those cults promote isolation in order to better control and brainwash you, and if you disagree with those cults' principles you are a negative person that has to be isolated, the same happened to my brother: he isolated me because i was a negative person that was trying to block his path towards success. And the saddest thing is that is not his fault, but is how the game was meant to be. They took advantage of a good, intelligent, determined and pure person like him. Those cults are no different from Jonestown, but instead of god there is money and the lead principle is chasing cash and luxury.

Regardless of how Garrett is as a partner, "it's just one bad decision" is a bad justification. Domestic violence can also be just one bad decision, but you can bet ur @ss I'd be telling Garrett to run if his wife hit him 'just once', especially since I believe close to half of people who are victims of domestic violence end up dead within one year due to a murder or murder-suicide by their partner or former partner (fun fact, 72% of murder-suicides are of partners or former partners in domestic violence situations). Safety, whether it be emotional safety or physical safety, isn't something to mess around with. I agree that she should have left him, 30k behind her back is a huge deal and he broke her trust in a huge way, even if he meant well. If they're able to build back up that trust slowly then I could see them eventually getting back together, but it takes a lot and a long time to trust someone who broke your trust in such a huge way, and that's assuming she'd want to get back together with him and not just cut her losses. I'd say the same if she went behind his back and spent 30k.

At some point you said “shame on me”. But there’s no shame in getting scammed: it’s the only thing these guys are actually expert at. It’s kinda like feeling shame that your accountant did your taxes correctly or something. You don’t need to feel shame because someone else is really good at their job. It’s just unfortunate that his job was scamming you. No shame, only lessons. You won’t make this mistake again and you’ve steered a lot of people away from the same one. I think pride is more appropriate than shame here.

    Steps to become a Guru:
    1. Scrap together multiple catchy motivational phrases about working hard and avoiding procrastination (similar to what your father used to tell you as a kid and you ignored). -> 2. Add some basic tips on whatever it is you are promoting (and which you can probably find on the internet or a book for free). -> 3. Add a 2k price tag to it. -> 4. Get 100 people to quit their jobs and commit fully to it -> 5. 95 fail, 5 succeed (a rate anyone could have without being a guru). -> 6. Convince the 95 that failed that it was their fault and the 5 that succeeded that it was your doing (Actually done before the success/failure step) -> 7. Get the testimonials of the 5 that succeeded so that you can convince another 100 to get in the game -> 8. Repeat steps 5-8.
This shit is typical MLM stuff...Copy pasted the speeches and gatherings of companies like herbalife into their own context..

I requested a refund. And said goodbye! I still feel ashamed of myself in believing that some like Dan would help me improve my life. But well you learn when you try sometimes

whenever i see a dude selling courses, i know its a scam. if he had real, valuable knowledge, he wouldn't need or bother making these courses. courses have one goal in mind, enriching the one that made them, so ofc. he needs puppets to buy them, humanity needs to stop being so naive....

I work in direct sales in the automotive industry now, before that I sold hearing aids. It took me 5 years to get from 30 to 60k a year and another 3-4 years to get over 6 figures in the profession. Because honing these skills takes time and you have to build a customer base of repeat and referral business.

Damn, dude, quit selling yourself short. You’re a teacher. Granted, in the States it’s a rather maligned career, but still easily respectable by most thinking human beings. You won’t make millions, but you’ll be shaping future generations. Lok can’t say that; he actually is easily replaceable.

I was in season 5 as well, July 2018. I was so excited to make this work at the time and I really believed in it. All my group members who I was in touch with back then were just as enthusiastic, but unfortunately they are in the same situation right now. And ofcourse no one really talks about it because they are ashamed to admit it.
I remember in one of the lessons of HTC Dan mentioned something along the lines of "If someone pays a ton of money for a high ticket product, they have a lot of emotions attached to it and they themselves will try to defend or justify it regardless of the value that the product brings in." Which is why there are so many people out there who are not making money after joining HTC, but still try to justify it by saying that it changed their mindset and what not when they know good and well that they indeed did get scammed.
Thank you so much for doing this interview and being so open about it. And thank you Coffeezilla!
