Unfortunately Mormons are notoriously not taught a lot about consent. They're also targets for MLMs because they're already pre-disposed to brain-washing.

@@Alyse_bell "oxygen rich" usually means that there's a high degree of O2 dissolved in the water (that's what fish breathe), but could technically mean that the water is acidic (higher presence of OH- molecules) or that the water molecules themselves contain oxygen. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Doterra girl in story 2 has a mom who did exactly that to her while growing up - giving her EOs to stop or change behaviors that she didn’t like.
I’ve noticed this is a common thing that EO moms do, and in particular I’ve seen many “autism moms” do this with their autistic kid.
If the girl was so bold to just apply EOs to someone else, she must have been raised to think that this is the way to do things.

    • @kerryconklin9828
      @kerryconklin9828 2 ปีที่แล้ว +32

Ohhh! That makes so much sense! And not to diagnose her or anything, but her maybe being on the spectrum could explain why she has some of those behaviors! She may really not understand that how she's acting is wrong. Sooo much sense now!

@@kerryconklin9828 Yes, if it's not a diagnosable condition then it's just entitlement or poor nurturing. I’m late diagnosed autistic and grew up in a religious cult, in a large family who were avid DoTerra oil users. I’m in my 30’s now, and have been in therapy for several years, but the DoTerra girl absolutely made me think of my early adult self (18-22). I was so disregulated, burnt out from years of performative masking in social settings, and trying to get through life by parroting unhealthy interactions I’d experienced in my very isolated/sheltered home life. I was having what I now know were autistic meltdowns/shutdowns (also panic attacks from PTSD) that would look on the outside as very erratic behavior for a young adult. My heart breaks for both people in the story, and I hope that the girl in the 2nd story, whether she has underlying issues, enmeshment with her family, or just is very emotionally dysregulated, gets some support and help to stop violating people’s boundaries.

    • @lsmmoore1
      @lsmmoore1 ปีที่แล้ว +22

@@kerryconklin9828 And ironically, the sort of training that can make an autistic person not understand this stuff is wrong is the stuff that is supposed to be teaching them the appropriate way to socialize with people. But often such training for autistic kids includes a lot of BS. One example of such I heard of, which has nothing to do with essential oils, is a "game" in which a person says to another person "can you make a happy face" and then physically moves that person's mouth into a smile. And by physically I mean physically, as in pushing the corners of the other person's mouth into a smile with one's fingers.
I heard of this from a post by the babysitter of a kid who was taught that "game" by his therapists in the name of teaching appropriate life skills. The babysitter explained to the kid that what he was doing was a no-no, thankfully. But I'm betting a lot more of this BS "social skills" training doesn't get noticed until the kid grows up and gets in trouble because they wrongly assume that such behavior can constitute a normal and appropriate social interaction among adults. And often the adults who issue such training have no idea that the kid is just going to take that game and assume it to be a normal social interaction. Because the adults themselves were sold a lot of BS about how autistic learning works. They often don't get that the kid will most likely, in Vulcan-like fashion, mentally jot down the exact BS things that were done to them and be like "okay, this is clearly the recommended expert and ideal way to interact with people, I'll file this away for later"

Fun fact: the arm-tugging “test” is an old faith healing/snake oil salesman trick. The trick is where exactly they grab your arm. First they grab your wrists and can easily pull you off-balance. Then after you use whatever magical product they’re trying to shill, they do it again but grab your arms just fractionally higher above your wrist, making it harder to pull you off balance as now you’re using your arm rather than wrist muscles to resist. I had it done to me once by an ASEA rep (and yes, I’ve submitted that story lol) and recognized it from some show I’d seen years ago. I use it as a fun party trick from time to time now. It proves nothing other than that they are fully aware of the scam they’re pulling because someone had to show them exactly how to do it for it to work.

Wow, they sure are stuck in the 1900s. But I guess most people can be easily impressed/convinced. I was shocked at how many people had suddenly become scientics during 2021-2022. Usually it's the confidence that is very manipulative. Actual virologists or immunologist could never claim anything 100%, because most conversations require a dialogue or discussions, not a monologue. That's why we have peer reviewing process for any claim.

Reminds me of "healers" visiting churches who get you to sit in a chair and put your legs out in front and pull one leg harder than the other and say one legs longer than the other. Then they pray for healing and do it again and both legs are suddenly even. "Hallelujah!" I had it done to me once. So sickeningly manipulative.

The story from the "Amway kid" was super fascinating to me because my mom's cousin and her husband have been in very deep into Amway since the early 90s. They never pitched "the business" to us thankfully, but my parents always eluded to me that their work was somewhat scammy. They were fairly successful, having bought progressively larger homes while Amway was their only source of income. There were pictures in his office of them wearing the finest mid 90s fashion while rubbing elbows with politicians and celebrities.
I don't know any details because it was kept very hush-hush in my family, but about 6 years ago, things must have gone south fast with their business. While we were at the Amway Palace (as we called it) for Christmas Eve one year, they announced that they were moving to be closer to their daughter, and because they just didn't need that big of a house anymore. I found out after some online sleuthing that their house was foreclosed on. They moved into a rental house that is much smaller and he has since started selling something for another company. I am pretty close with their daughter, and while I have never asked about their financial situation, she has hinted to the fact that they don't have any savings. I am going to guess that they were probably encouraged to spend excessively to further the image that Amway can make your financial dreams come true. This video was so interesting to me because it gives me a window into what was likely going on in their (and my cousin being the kid) lives. We also live in the Midwest, in fact in the state where Amway was founded, so they may have even been part of the same team.
Very scary and interesting at the same time!!

My flip of this is that I also feel it's alright if a woman wants to be a stay at home mom, but just make sure it's truly what you want. Don't do it because that's all you've ever known and been told, that's not really making your own decision. I try to be mindful of this, because I've heard of women who've wanted to be stay at home moms or who already are and are ostricized by working women and seen as "setting us back". So that's why I say so long as it's truly what the person wants and they've been informed of other paths and being at home is still their desire, more power to them.
Sadly, ensuring the person has indeed been given those alternate options is the harder part, especially as MLM's were practically birthed in reglious communities, like Mormonism.

I need adult conversations and at least a little intellectual stimulation each day, plus I need lots of quiet time to be able to functional at all. Like others have said, if a woman really wants to dedicate her life to being a SAHM, more power to her. If I could have birthed fully-grown adult children I might have been interested in motherhood, LOL. Now that all my nieces and nephews are grown, I enjoy them in ways I sure didn't when they were little. Oh gosh, your contributor was spot on with the Amway story. I've been there and done that. Including Dream Builders. A huge eye opener for us was when we figured out the way people earned more than the income cap. Which I believe was only $110, 000 a year at that time, (early 2000's), after achieving the highest level. The actual wealth at the top was made up from the profit off of all the tapes and books. But even worse was the horrible religious pressure. This was in San Diego, and there was one of those Mega Six Flags Over Jesus churches we were pretty much forced to join. And I'm an atheist, haha. Our upline was huge on the pressure to attend all the services and classes at that church throughout the week. And to embrace the Christian nationalism this church spouted. Our upline also tried to keep us separated from our non Amway friends. The were lots of Amway social events we felt we had to attend, which left no time for an outside life. And we were told the usual mlm garbage that if family and friend's weren't in it with us, they were a negative in our lives. I knew this was a scam, but my gullible partner had a father that was super rich from being involved from the beginning for a number of MLM'S. Anyway, I can easily believe the parents in this story staying in for thirty years. It can easily become your whole life and all you know. Pure cult crap. Thank you for all this great work, Hannah. I'll write out my many, many idiot MLM stories dating back to the early 1970's for you when I have the time.

Fill your legs and they fill theirs?
      Never heard of that.
There is no limit on how many legs you can have or how deep the legs can be. If you sponsored 6 people and they sponsored six, all you have is a bunch of sponsored people. The company doesn’t pay for sponsoring people, they pay for products sold every month to you and your group.
If you help one of you personal sponsored attain platinum sales, you get a 6% bonus on their volume. If help 3 get to platinum, you earn 3 6% checks plus the Emerald bonus, 6 you earn all that plus the diamond bonus, at 12 you qualify as double diamond, 18 triple diamond, 20 crown, then crown ambassador.
If a diamond earns about $250,000/year, what does a crown earn?
There is no limit on income because there is no limit on how big an organization you can build.
Yes, there is money made on books and tapes, but that doesn’t replace their AmWay income, who ever told you had was not truthful.
Books and tapes are education, your annual cost about $800. Success people people teach you how to build a business based in person experience. How much does a college degree in Business cost you, how about an MBA? Tens of thousands, and most of the college professors has ever started or run a successful multi-million dollar business, they can only teach the theory of business, and you don’t make any money until you graduate and borrow tens of thousands and invest your own money into starting a business that has no guarantee of success.

Savanah just had a live last night for YL That Oil Show. In that show, one woman (that sells this) tricked her husband saying her oil was a special lube for bedroom time for him to get this specific oil on his body parts. 😮 Apparently it was an oil to help liver function. AND she filmed this story WHILE she was driving with no seat belt on while the seat belt alarm dinged the whole time in the video. Crazy!!!

The roommate story happened when they were mormon missionaries, if you know anything about mormon missions, they aren't allowed to be out of sight of their partner EVER. They are also encouraged to make sure they're both being faithful enough and following all the rules. All of that on the surface is extremely ridgid, I cant imagine having to deal with constantly being in her BO. Mormanism is also known for crossing personal boundaries most people have, which is probably why her roommate felt she could violate her like that.

That Amway story is pretty consistent with what my friends have experienced. I have several different friends that got into the World Wide branch and it literally ruined all of their finances, tore up marriages and ripped up part my church as a result. It seems that the World Wide branch is closely connected with religion in a sketchy way. One friend said that the conferences were "like going to church" the speaker would give a "sermon" and people would cry and then dedicate their lives to Christ while they're being told this is what God wants for them. Then they were also told that they had to put the "business first" because not only is it what God wants for them but if they didn't they weren't working hard enough to get the results that God wanted to "bless them with". This meant that they started using all their time and relationships at our (real) church to pitch the products and the business. It ruined a couple of different ministries and got to the point that the youth pastor left the church because he was told he couldn't pitch the business during church events anymore because his business is not what church is supposed to be about. It left a giant hole in the kids that he had built a relationship with and the ones that stuck around afterwards still have trust issues. The whole thing was difficult and heart breaking. Before the fallout the biggest red flag to me was that my friends who got roped into it, were putting this business before everything else in their life and it essentially became their religion, which is ironically the exact opposite of what we believe God wants for us. They couldn't even see it until the major fallout. I had other friends from a separate social group that got involved and after, again being told that they're doing what God wants and putting the business before all else, ruined their finances and almost got a divorce over it. Two of my other friends almost didn't get married because she was concerned about her future husband spending $400 a month on these products that they couldn't afford all for some future "financial gain" and "time freedom" that she knew would never come. My best friend got roped into it too and she was told by her upline that she had to come to this conference in another city across the state. Her request for time off was decline and she had no sick time left but she was told that if she were really motivated to succeed in this "business" then she would do whatever it took to make it to this conference, including calling in sick even if that time was unpaid because the conference was an "investment" she couldn't afford to miss. She was expected to call in and listen to the motivational messages everyday at ridiculous hours in order to "succeed", she was told to read all those books that were listed out and used all the phrases that were listed out in the story here. I had another friend try to pitch me the business and when I asked her what the business was, all she could tell me was that it was "a business opportunity that would give you the time freedom and ability to retire early that we all want" but got mad when I pressed her for business logistics like, how to make money. When I figured out it was actually Amway and asked why it's called World Wide and not Amway, I was told vehemently that it's not Amway because Amway was a scam and things have changed since Amway but that it's definitely not Amway. Sorry for the long comment, I guess this turned into a mini horror story. I didn't realize how deeply this particular scam affected me and the people around me until I wrote this out. I've had other friends and co-workers pitch me for Younique, do-terra, it works, beach body, AdvoCare, LuLaRoe and probably others that I can't remember aside from my own experience in Mary Kay. At this point I can't even trust the friend requests and messages that come my way anymore because of how many "hey Hun" type messages I get. It is heart breaking and actually causes me anxiety when someone wants to "reconnect" anymore. Thank you for doing what you do and having the courage to speak out. I wish I had your content a long time ago, perhaps it could have saved some heart break.

I didn't understand what was so special about it then and I definitely think it's a bunch of woo now. While I liked some of the products others I didn't. My ex and I spent a lot of money we didn't have trying to make the business work. I always felt kinda scummy trying to sell people on the products and the dream. We only stayed in for about 3-4 years and only because the men had a positive impact on my husband and I enjoyed several of the personal enrichment books that I read, one of which really changed my look on things. I met some great people, however, I'm only in contact with two of them anymore.

OMG The amway story hit home so hard. I remember many of my family members falling into that and so many other schemes. They were all struggling financially, and it’s just so predatory. I remember the “work for yourself” “run your own business” line being presented as THE DREAM we were all supposed to have. The vilification of corporate jobs was pretty icky especially since most of the people selling that narrative were actually funding their MLM “work” through their spouse’s full time corporate job.

It absolutely astounds me how many people tell me I should have a child because "I'd make a great mom," and then are shocked when I'm like, "Nah, I'm good. I have other goals in life."

Small detail, but crystal deodorant isn't like an actual rock. It's crystallized salts. You rub it on with water and the minerals transfer. There is a learning curve because you have to start with washed arm pits and the skin has to fully dry after application. There's a lot of user error, but it is a legitimate alternative to traditional deodorant. It lasts for about 24 hours to prevent odor. It's not for everyone, but the option is there.

About Amway: I was also an Amway kid all through the 90's. I was heavily into it emotionally, and had Amway plans of my own for when I became an adult. While I can see now that it is a pyramid scheme, there is so much good that came to our family specifically from being in it. The number one of those things being meeting my now brother in law, who we never would have met otherwise. He's such an incredible person, and we are lucky to have him. Along with this came the drive to push forward and hope for a better life. And there is some go getter attitude that most of our family adopted as a result of years of being heavily involved, and that attitude has extended into other areas of life. Yes, we lost money. No, I would never encourage anyone to join now. None of my family is still affiliated with Amway, and I wouldn't want them to be. But there are some things I miss. Emotionally, as well as some products. Gum, toothpaste, and mouthwash, for instance. Not much besides that.

I read the materials that came with them, read them again, and decided there was no way in heck I could make money doing this. I used the oils for medicinal stuff for awhile, but it gradually dawned on me that they don't really do anything unless it's a zit or a bug bite, or to smell nice.

I thought the same thing. I don't know if you're old enough to remember this. Back in the day when you'd walk through a department store, the ladies at the make-up counter would spray you with perfume. The make-up area was in the middle of the store; It was hard to go into the mall without going through that area. Certain smells give me severe headaches. Others can exacerbate my asthma.

When I was in college I had someone try to recruit me to I think amway but they never said the company name. The way she explained it was all I had to do was change the way I buy things and I’m like how am I making money if I’m spending money and there’s no outside source of money? Anyway she got mad and I left.

My husband tried Amway once and I was skeptical of the opportunity when he first brought it up but I hadn't heard of Amway and I wanted to be supportive. After a few meetings I was like hmmm so I looked it up and was like what the heck is this 🤣 my husband didn't last too long after that! His ultimate decision to stop was after they tried to get us to only use their products, my husband offered it to his mom and she was like this stuff is crap 😭😭 we still joke about it til this day!

I find the Monat stories so fascinating; because the idea of a "hair diet" or beauty regime its so alien to me (aside from having an actual healthy diet, and choosing products that are right for your hair type). I kinda feel these "hair regimes" are a weird offshoot of celebrity hairdresser brand cult back in the 90's; same as weight-loss MLMs are still surfing the extreme thiness media culture of that era.

The test mentioned in Story 3 of pulling on someone's arm and then having them drink the product and showing how much "stronger" they are sounds like it's actually a form of applied kinesiology. More than just being more prepared to resist the second time (though that's part of it) Applied Kinesiology (not the same as the college major/area of study with a similar name) often uses physics to make it appear that something has made you stronger. In the most popular tests they push you or pull you at one angle that is very hard to resist with your center of balance, and then after giving the product or service they're touting they do it again pushing from a slightly different angle that is significantly easier to resist. Applied kinesiology "tests" are used to "prove" all sorts of scammy alternative medicine claims from supplements to refllexology to crystal healing. Notably, it is almost impossible to do applied kinesiology (or at least do it in a way that works) without knowing what you are doing, and it can be a useful way to tell if a practicioner or salesperson or whathaveyou knows that they're scamming you.
If I remember correctly, Oh No Ross and Carrie (great podcast, they investigate fringe science spirituality and claims of the paranormal so you don't have to and as such have covered some MLMs before since a lot of them are psuedosciency in nature) had a great explanation of how applied kinesiology works in their episode on Reflexology, googling the podcast name+reflexology should get you there with the first result. Alternately the wikipedia article gives a little background as well. In general tests like this are a great red flag especially for anything making health claims.

It's especially interesting to me that in Story 3 (20:47) the reps *had* to attend Amway meetings multiple nights a week. I have a friend who got out of a religious cult relatively recently and, aside from being encouraged to sleep very few hours every night, most of his evenings were taken up doing mandatory "Bible" study.
By reducing his mental functioning through a lack of proper rest and impeding his ability to make friends outside of the cult, they were trying their very best to prevent him from realising the truth.
    Thanks for your work, Hannah!

I have a comment and a question. My sister gave me Crystal deodorant years ago. It's like a huge block of salt that did nothing. Your story talked about putting crystals on the armpit. I think it was a brand name though. Question: Is 31...gifts or bags... a mlm? It has personalized bags and items of all sizes. It's kinda funny seeing so many companies we grew up with, Amway, Tupperware, Avon, Kirby vacuums, we all knew someone who sold them.

If his companion rubbed him with oils, I would be furious! I would have made it 4 days as her companion. Jesus made poison ivy, too. I am NOT going to rub it on me either!

I had to look up The Goads after hearing that they are literally an Amway music group and listened to some of "I'm Going Diamond" and I literally am dead xDDD ngl the song is kind of a banger, but it is so comical that they literally had what sounds like a 70s/80s band make music about the company and opportunity. I have never, and I mean NEVER heard of that regarding an MLM before in my life and I am literally dying of laughter over it.

I was part of an MLM and was in the weekly meetings we needed to attend when I witnessed something I thought was questionable. There was a woman who was invited to get a makeover. This makeover was done in front of the consultant's downline supposedly for educational purposes. The consultant then did her business pitch. The woman who got the makeover was hesitant and said her husband wasn't on board with it. The consultant kept pressuring her to join right in front of us. The woman ended up joining because of the pressure. I knew then that I had to get out. I thought that was a jerk move. I was at another location and saw another consultant pressure another person to join even though the person was uncomfortable and clearly didn't want to join. I'm so glad I'm out and in a job I mostly enjoy!
