- The arrow experts at 3Rivers Archery show you how to use cresting paint and the Bohning pro-crester to paint cresting lines on your arrows. (Scene from Crafting Traditional Wood Arrows DVD available from 3RiversArchery.com)
You apply the paint first, then the sealant. Please also note that the sealant isn't required, it simply helps with durability.
@yaho0o123 Yes. Acrylic paint is very versatile. However, we recommend testing first. It isn't always compatible with all lacquers and finishes.
Thanks for the GREAT VID!!!!!!!!
new subcriber!!
We are using the Pro-Crester. You can find one on our web site... 3RiversArchery dot com.
Beautiful Job! To fancy for me.LOL

Typically you simply do them to your preference. You can create your own pattern or follow an existing pattern you may have seen elsewhere.
If the oil based stain has been sealed with some type of sealer you should not have any problems with acrylic paints.
@stigmata77 Yes.
those look very good! Do you get cresting patterns from somewhere or do you just go ahead and do them?
I was wondering if it is possible to paint over a oil based stain with acrylic paints?
hey i do it .. for like when im bored..i use oil paints tho ..
Do you apply the paint before or after you have dipped the arrow into a sealant or whatever
hi all, is it possible to crest carbon or aluminium shafts?
cresting is meant more for longbow and recurve bows...i dont see too many people cresting their aluminum or carbon arrows.
I love this video but I just had a quick question. I want to get into cresting my own arrows but once a vane or feather falls off or is knocked off do you have to strip all the paint off and start over again before you refletch your arrows? Also if I for whatever reason wanted to change colors, how do you go about stripping the colors off once they are painted on? I am most likely going to use Testors model paints for my cresting. Thanks!
It depends on what the fletching takes with it when it falls off. If the paint chips, then you may need to take the rest of the paint off (carbon/aluminum only) to keep it looking nice. You are not required to though. To strip colors (carbon/aluminum arrows only), use a feather stripper or dull knife edge to gently pull the paint from the shaft. Best of luck and have fun cresting your arrows!
will it affect the arrow's performance
Cresting is so lightweight that it will not have an impact on an arrow's performance.
thanks
whats the product used to spin the arrow
and what paint is suitable for painting a fiber glass shaft
It is a cresting machine, called a crester. An example of one is here: www.3riversarchery.com/spinrite-arrow-crester.html
What type of brush it that your using? Also can parts for this machine be bought?
+Bruce Grieve It is a sableline brush, but they do not offer this exact brush. You can find the ones we do carry here: www.3riversarchery.com/sableline-round-cresting-brushes.html For the crester, that was discontinued by Bohning a while ago. I am not sure where you could find any parts.
i'v always wanted to paint some petroglyphs on my cedar shafts, lol
no...really.
