Nice job Andy - cresting arrows is a great winter hobby when the weathers bad - great feeling to be able to make your own and turn out something that is usually better than whats on offer in the shops - I looked at various cresting machines but ended up making my own with a dremel style multi tool and a V block in a sliding track which I found works brilliantly - the moveable block allows support right next to the bit that your painting which I found keeps the shaft perfectly steady and level - also you can crest right up to the nock like Hans wants to do - great looking arrows and great fun to make - cheers - Dale
There are better options for the paint brush. I use professional Pin Stripping brushes that lay a much fine line and allow for a slight wobble of the shaft without causing a broad spot in the band. Instead of expensive cresting paints I simply use Testors model enamels which are available in a wide array of colors.
Great video. Thank you for making it! What is the name of this cresting machine? And is it possible to crest arrows with fletchings on it? What if you want to crest at the very end of the arrow just where the noch should be applied? Looks like there is no space for it. All in all would you recommend this machine? I am looking forward to buy one. Keep it going! Thanks a lot! derHans :)
Hi Hans, the machine is a Bohning cresting system, not cheap though have a look at the link here www.merlinarchery.co.uk/bohning-arrow-cresting-kit.html or have a look on ebay for one. Yes you can paint right up to the nock but not really with the fletchings on , but on saying that I have never tried! The idea is to get the brush as steady as possible and resting a close to the arrow shaft, give it a go a post what the result is.
@@archeryandy422 Can you coat the arrow with Danish oil first if you don't have lacquer? And is there a way to hand rub the lacquer on without it getting sticky too fast?

Hi Leonard, is the brush like a rigger brush?

Are you cresting on bare wood or has the shaft been coated with lacquer?
Hi Charles, the shaft has had one coat on to make sure that the paint didn't bleed through the grain.
