Alternators with bad diodes can also sound like a noisy power steering pump. A deep whirring noise. Just mentioned since you noted a P/S whine after start up.😊
Working on semi trucks with big batteries, i had to cut the clamps off and crimp on terminals, the clamps would never conduct enough current to pass. But bolted down with a cable lug they do. Takes longer but more reliable test.
Common problem with cars, too, I can't count the number of times jumping a car with high-quality jumper cables where the jaws just wouldn't make good enough contact without multiple twists and reseating.

wow i have not seen one of those indicators on a battery in forever i had one of sorts on an old deep cycle boat battery would make it a lot easier to see if you are out of water in battery
Good stuff, Faye. Nice to see that even a Crown has the typical build plate, just with rivet covers. Very cool! Have you ever seen a comprehensive listing anywhere of Trim and Plant? There's a Wikipedia page that lists Toyotas factories, but it doesn't include the numbers like are used on the build plates. Thought this is something you might know?
I used to do continuity test on fuses but I found that in special cases, that can give you a false passed the test. It can be broken but barely touching, giving it enough to pass the continuity test but when put on a load, it will expand and lose that contact. For this reason I use a meter or digital test light to see volts. Continuity usually is good enough, but it's rare that a fuse will break in the way I mentioned. Just giving my 2 cents with my experience
You might want to mention, if you have one in your city, local Auto electric rebuilders. They are usually cheaper than a new alternator and you have the comfort of someone being thorough with your rebuilt alternator, rather than an assembly line from gawd knows where. They strip, clean, test and replace only the failed components. In my experience, its usually only bearings and voltage regs that fail. Just a sug
Hi Faye! You mentioned in the video that you were also going to test for voltage drop, but I didn't see where you actually did that. Also, is there a particular reason why you pulled the alternator before you did any voltage drop testing. And, as always, thanks for taking the time to share with us!
For the newer vehicles the old battery load tester may cause sum weird results due to the a BMS thinking their is a sudden heavy load. I purchased a newer type that checks without a heavy load. It will work for a battery out of circuit though
Related question... why do you like that charger vs others? Like- what made you pick that one? Recently I ended up buying a DeWalt charger that has a starting function but also a desulfating program / reconditioning program. TIA!
The fancy tools may make it easier, and if you are selling tools thats probably important, but if you are just diagnosing a charging problem, you can easily do this with just a voltage meter. Where I live, we have shop that will rebuild/repair alternators, it wont often save you much money, but they can often get you back up and running quickly without spending a lot of time looking for parts. My guess is that has an internal voltage regulator, that maybe lost a diode, and is only charging at half capacity.
Great video Faye. I believe in testing the Alternator if you just had a multimeter you could perform it the same way? Checking the DC volts and then adding a load like light and such?
Great question! It did actually state the area of the fault! It had a bad ripple current test, which could indicate a faulty rectifier or stator. Very interesting!!
When I was a young guy back in the 1980s, the quick-and-dirty test everyone used for suspicious alternators was to disconnect the positive battery cable while the engine was running. If the engine died out, you knew the alternator wasn't charging; otherwise, you'd assume it was okay. I wonder if that still works on modern cars? Or will it damage the alternator? Anyway, good video!
Oooooh I learned specifically not to do that in today's modern cars in one of my Toyota training classes! Something about voltage spikes and damaging modules but I can't remember exactly why to be honest. That sounds like a great trick for my 80s rides though!! Super quick and dirty!!!!😆
@@FayeHadley Never a good idea, the battery smoothes out the spikes in voltage. Batteries develop a higher internal resistance as they fail, many "glitches" in seemingly unrelated systems (engine, controls, etc.) are fixed by replacing a seemingly good, but older, battery,

Hi Faye, hope you read the comments. Quick Question for you based on your opinion and experience. I have a 2005 Toyota Tacoma extra cab that just got a wandering fuel gage needle. Filled up yesterday and watched it pogo on the way home from full tank to empty with the reserve light on. Is this a sign of the fuel pump unit failure, or just the float sensor going bad? Tried to message you on Tiktok but got a bust signal.
Actually you can tell easily from the test at O'Reilly's! I got a printout that I had a directly to the customer as well, but it honestly doesn't matter because this type of alternator has a built-in regulator! So regardless of what went wrong, you are still replacing the same component. Don't worry about it, watch that flat rate time and send it!

For years I hated working on Toyotas in the north because of their propensity to rot so fast.
