    Thanks Nigel, a lovely video. Can’t wait for the Barn Owl! I was really lucky to see and photograph a pair of Barn Owls and a Shortie hunting in the same field recently in Essex - magical!

      Thanks Steve. Owls can be somewhat addictive and I've had "non-wildlife" friends see a Barn Owl for the first time and are amazed and really get engaged with nature a bit more subsequently. Good luck with your photography and it's a great time of year to be out.

      Hello David..Short Eared Owls are winter migrants that fly over from Northern Europe so October-Feb?march is best time but obviously where they appear is random and they tend not to stay in one place for long. This was actually on the East Kent coast but for example this winter there have been so few sightings I never even went down there (allowing for Covid)..not sure where you are based but keep an eye in the autumn on local bird watching groups on Twitter/Instagram for sightings

    Great shots, for someone like me starting out, can you tell me how you captured focus with the burst, was it back button continuous? Was it tracking focus? Would love to hear, all the best from the Bahamas.

    OK my bad just saw in the description of your video, thanks.

      Hi Peter..no worries ..yes. I use back button focus on all my wildlife photography (nb landscape a different game of course!)...no hard and fast rules, there are alternatives but for me it just works. Equally I often use just single point focus but again depends on the situation/subject but my main rule is, the tougher the conditions (bad light, twitchy subject), the less I try and give the camera to do/struggle with. So bad light on Owls for example is less focus points with AF-C mode (continuous)..I find things like 3-D tracking only work consistently in better conditions..Hope that helps a bit Peter...

      @@nigelmorley8092 Many thanks, I imagine just lots of trial and error, and of course patient's. Heading off to Kenya for 10 day safari, can't afford all those expensive bits of gear. Just a Lumix fx 330 so hope to get some shots, all the best sir.

      @@nigelmorley8092 Me again, I meant the Panasonic Lumix FZ330 I think as a bridge camera it may work, if so will do an upgrade, maybe a mirror less camera who knows. Thanks again

    • @nigelmorley8092
      @nigelmorley8092  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Peter..that Lumix will be great for a safari..fantastic zoom range up to 600mm and it can do burst mode of 6fps as well...to be honest, on a safari, lots of kit is a disadvantage as the action can happen at any moment and easy to miss as you fiddle with lenses or settings..my only big tip would be to practice lots at home on suitable subjects before you go..if you have a pet dog use him, or go to a local park and practice techniques on dogs there..imagine they are cheetahs !! Get to know your camera and have a "go to" setting you're comfortable with so that may be ensuring your shutter speed is at least 1/1000th, as you'll need (or more) that for wildlife most of the time ..there is a great feature on your camera called Auto iso which enables you to set the shutter speed and the aperture and the camera will set ISO to give you the right exposure..it means you can really concentrate on composition and action images without worrying too much about exposure..try it at home but may be a great place to start on the safari...here's a link to a YT video about it...hope that helps... th-cam.com/video/MshusSrCixo/w-d-xo.html . use that and also learn a bit about your focusing options and you'll be well set...

      @@nigelmorley8092 Many thanks, yes will practice for sure, what worries me will be those early morning and evening drives, I think they use a low spot light to find those cats in the trees gulp, as the sun rises I am sure all will be revealed. Appreciate the time and suggestions you have provided. While waiting for the camera to arrive I am using an old Samsung point and shoot, suppressing as it has all the functions so working in aperture mode and learning the triangle of photo love. Will keep you posted.
