awesome video. I've watched this about 10 times now. so inspirational and brilliant. the work you have done for these owls is incredible and must be very special for you. you are fantastic Nigel and I can't wait to see more owls!
Hi Mark..thanks for watching...the hide is a circular dome one I bought about 10 years ago from Wildlife Watching Supplies in Devon..they do a range of various sizes (at a squeeze mine will take two people) ..they aren't cheapest but they do last and run by Kevin who is really helpful. My recommendation for one if just for one person for occasional use is get one of those cheap ones with a built in chair that you can find for about £75-80..they won't withstand a Force 9 gale but are very mobile and do the job. My dome one has been outside for 3-4 months at a time in winter and survived everything thrown at it
Great to see someone who's prepared to put back into habitat management etc. Although I'm not a photographer, I too have personally put time and effort into Barn owl conservation, with great results! Keep up the good work.
Wonderful stuff, Nigel, looking forward to checking out part two tomorrow! Primarily landscapes myself, I found it extremely challenging when I was given the opportunity last summer to spend some time on private land attempting to photograph the Barnies there!
Thanks Martin....thats a great opportunity with the Barnies...hopefully you'll get more chances (offering the landowner a nice image often helps!).. actually you can carry a lot of your landscape skills into wildlife especially with using composition creatively etc...I'm in the process of doing a video on camera settings for wildlife (concentrating on focusing and exposure) so hope that gives a few extra tips...
Thanks for watching and commenting Jeff....I'm glad you enjoyed it. Whilst the frustration is a regular experience, it's never a bad day for me if I can be out in the countryside on a morning as stunning as that one !. I'm just in the process of editing Part Two which was on the next day where I go through a similar experience ! To be honest I've waited hundreds of hours for Barn Owls over the years and it never feels like time wasted for those moments of magic.
Sitting up in bed, with a cup of tea and a biscuit (or two!), rewatching this excellent video. Life just doesn’t get any better! I applaud your conservation work, Nigel, well done! Now, Part Two calls and maybe another cuppa?
Another fab video and shots to go with it. Had the privilege of watching my first Barny on Merseyside earlier this year. I will be going back from more.
Excellent video, once again inspiring me to get out and have another try at capturing birds in flight. Looking forward to your tips and behind the scenes in part 2. I am not sure I would have the confidence to set up a hide, too many curious passers by :)
Thanks Rob. Practice really helps as always re birds in flight. Yes this is on private land and away from dodgy types or more importantly where it might attract attention that disturbs the wildlife
Beautiful Video. Very Much Appreciate, your skills and determination to get excellent photographs, an inspiring and informative film of the barn owl. Many Thanks
Thanks Paul. Appreciate your comments on both videos. Glad you liked them. Barn Owls are my favourite bird so it was nice to get some nice images and be able to vlog about the days as well. Very rarely comes together like that !!
Having already commented on your video, a quick update .I've been lucky enough to have a pair of Barn owls nest within 200 metres of the house, with the 3 youngsters now fully fledged. Fabulous views every evening. The hard work put in to building and erecting nest boxes certainly pays off! Regards Dan
Really enjoyed this - followed the link from your IG account - I am definitely more of a landscape photographer, but I love the way you explain what you are up to, and the images are superb. I am looking forward to Part 2!
Excellent shots! I've never been able to get quite that close, but you've obviously put the effort in with the work on the land etc, so well deserved & great job! Lovely looking owl.
Hi Nigel. Im new to this Chanel and I simply love The fakt that your vlogging teknic isent perfekt. That fact makes youre chanel more genuin. Ceep them coming. Grateings from Åland Finland.
Hello Conny, thanks for watching. With wildlife if it almost always impossible to preplan so the vlogging always has to be reactive so you get few choices on positioning or timing etc which as you say makes it quite "real"..my other videos on things like landscapes or bluebells are easier to control with nice B-roll etc . But it's nice to do both. Thanks for commenting
Superb video, Nigel. I love the way you cover all the frustrations involved, as well as the moments of pure joy; that for me is what it’s all about! Thanks for the tip about under-exposing to darken the background. What exposure setting do you use, spot, partial, evaluative or centre-weighted?
Thanks Steve. I'm glad the frustration came over ok !!! Re metering I'll cover it in Part Two but usually, not always I'm on evaluative (average) metering with compensation used as it's needed but occasionally it's full manual
Ive found with the D850 birds need faster Shutter speed. So why didn’t you just up the SS to offset blown out white feathers vs -EV? Really excellent vlog work btw. I’d love to see you doing more of them but like you say you need a theme (inspiration).
Willnot Betracked I was lucky one day to gave an owl sit on my post box for over an hour. The unlucky think was my camera was in my car which would have meant scarring it way.
Can't wait for part 2 - Awesome pics Nigel...love the details of the owl! Do you take some kind of podscast/book for the waits? :) Thanks for sharing the vid! :)
Thanks Senor. Headphones and AC/DC's Thunderstruck usually works !! Actually I don't as there's a real danger you'll miss something but I do take my binoculars and there's usually something to watch if you're in a hide. Also often things like crows calls give away an owl etc so I try and stay alert !! Food n water essential though
Nigel,...........EXCELLENT...............thank you
Dedication, Skill, Commitment, and an excellent photographer, what more can I say
Thanks for your kind words Steven
blinding Nick ,thank you ,really enjoyed that video ,and well done ! allot of effort paid off . just gorgeous shots , you're the man !

Great, thanks for the feedback Keith
Magical to say the least!!!
Many thanks Henry
So nice to see a video about photography and a cause. Well done.
Cheers Steven. For me the conservation aspect it what drives the photography and I'd be out there even if I'd left the camera at home !!
Absolutely breathtaking photography and amazing video. 👏👏👏Thank you Nigel.

Thoroughly enjoyed watching this video and how it conveys the frustration and exhilaration of trying to capture wildlife images. Brilliant!

What's in the right hand side corner at 18:31? A second owl? Top video btw!!
Think it was a Magpie..def not an Owl sadly
Hi Nigel,.... Missing your excellent videos, worried that it's been a year now... Hope you and yours are well.. Best wishes..
Sadly life has got in the way somewhat Steve..but thanks for asking and watching the videos
Lovely stuff buddy 😊😉👍
Many thanks
When you say you are underexposing by 2 stops, what are you metering on and in what mode? - Is it the hedge in the backgound?
Amazing. You gotta get the D500. Try baiting him to land on post with a feeding mouse from the pet store.
I've never even seen an owl in the wild, of any type, let alone photographed one - still, at 63, still plenty of time I hope!🤔😀😂
Willnot Betracked I was lucky one day to gave an owl sit on my post box for over an hour. The unlucky think was my camera was in my car which would have meant scarring it way.

Thanks Jason. It is indeed.

Brilliant! Thank you. Always expect the unexpected!!! I looked out my window and saw a long eared owl looking at me! (Instagram martinmckiernan4)
