  • In Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital Day Surgery Unit, bed 33 is being prepped for its first patient of the day. Seventy-year-old Christine has come in for an operation on her finger. She developed complications when a splinter went septic, causing permanent damage and pain to her finger. Christine is hoping that she won't need her fingertip amputated.
Over at Leeds Children's Hospital, paediatric bed three is looking after six-year-old Olivia, who has come in with her mum to have a biopsy on her bowel. Olivia is one of around 100,000 children in the UK who suffer from constipation, but hers is chronic. Surgeons will be testing for any serious underlying issues that would require invasive surgery.
At Barnsley Hospital's A&E department, resus bed two is with 27-year-old Jordan, who has been rushed in with a potentially life-threatening collapsed lung.
Back in Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital Day Surgery Unit, bed 40 is about to meet its second patient of the day. Thirty-nine-year-old Helen has a suspected heart condition which doctors are struggling to diagnose.
Back at Barnsley Hospital's A&E Department, bed 12 is with 83-year-old Lewis, who has been brought in by ambulance after collapsing at home. He's with his wife of twenty years Julie, who is concerned that Lewis has severe pain in his back.
Secret Life of a Hospital Bed is a unique 20-part series where across the 60-minute episodes, fixed-rig cameras tell the story of patients who enter four different hospitals across the UK. The hospitals are The Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, The Queen's Hospital in Romford, The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham and The Great Northern Childrens Hospital in Newcastle. The circumstances, the ailment, the treatment, the length of stay - everything is personal to the individual involved. But the one constant throughout is the bed.
An unprecedented look inside Britain's hospitals.
With over 150,000 currently in use across the NHS, hospital beds witness the most important moments of our lives. Filmed over five weeks, the series features four hospitals and one of the beds in their units including: A&E, Maternity, Day Surgery and Paediatrics.
Every patient who enters hospital has a different story to tell of how and why they are there. The unique nature of the access means that viewers see the ways in which patients and staff interact, shining a spotlight onto the vital work carried out by the hospitals dedicated staff members, and giving an intimate and heart-warming portrayal of life, death, and everything in-between inside Britain's hospitals.

Oh boy. It's up to us as parents to do what is best for our children, whether they want to or not. The best interest for Olivia would have been to get the sedation in her. I understand she was scared and there are ways to talk to her to help relieve some of her fears. The mom saying "oh I know I know" wasn't helping. Olivia has too much control.

Ain’t no way at 6 she would’ve been calling the shots the way she was.. unfortunately in that situation the mom was a push over and I don’t think she handled that properly.. also if the kid does end up having serious issues and more hospital visits the mom needs to do better..

I waited over 9 hours with my son at the pediatric hospital in south Texas, waiting to even see a medical, professional. As soon as they examined him, they rushed him into the operating room for emergency surgery. I kept telling them he needed to be seen and they ignored me. Kids with colds were seen first because they had health insurance and we didn’t. He could have been paralyzed because of their negligence.
