  • Black Jack: The Movie is an underrated 90s gem brought to life with the power of two Osamus. One to create it. The other to adapt it. Resulting in a stylish and jazzy medical drama about why transhumanism cannot be put in the hands of heartless corporations.

    Osamu Dezaki’s take on Black Jack, through the movie and the entire run of OVAs, is possibly my favourite incarnation of the franchise/universe as a whole. I adore the very specific and clever blending of comedic tones and seriously dark stakes (Osamu Tezuka ain’t given enough credit for having a HELL of a dark streak, imho) the manga pulls off and I honestly enjoyed the lighter tone of the TV anime on its own merits (though I appreciated the more serious and focused arc the sequel series took), but there’s something very grand, gothic, moody and just gorgeous about Dezaki and his team’s take on the world that is so striking and impactful that it blows my mind that the movie and OVAs aren’t talked about more. All that needs to be said about the specific tone Dezaki & Co. were aiming for is that every time the scene shifts to Black Jack’s cliffside abode in any of the OVAs or the film, the sky is black and grey, rain is coming down heavily, and thunder and lightning crash down to earth with aplomb, and I am HERE for the sheer MELODRAMA of it all.
    (it helps that incredibly clever shot composition, gorgeous artwork, and actually engaging stories are mixed in with The Melodrama™️ of course, but that goes without saying)

    Wow, this is like the complete opposite of Bennett's opinion.

    • @DreamedLint
      @DreamedLint 5 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Bennett's review of this was terrible. Even if one doesn't like the film, Kyoto does it justice by examining the importance and legacy of its creators. Sage honestly has weird expectations/standards for stories.

      @@Rj_2099 Yeah, I can definitely see that. I still watch them because it's cool to see anime that doesn't typically get covered be talked about, and he's got good production quality. But then Kyoto Video came along and dominated that shit.

    WOW! Amazing analysis on the film I loved every second of this video. Btw THANK YOU for mentioning Osomu Dezaki! I learned about him recently and have been blown away by his work. I finished watching Ashita No Joe and I would love it if you made a video on it!

      And yes, I do feel like Dezaki doesn't get much credit for how much he really influenced direction in anime.

    It's been years since I've seen the movie but I never noticed the cameos that you can see around the 8:16 mark in this video. Bottom right is Don Dracula and the top middle looks like Marukubi Boon translated into Dezaki's style!

    The joke with Pinoko calling herself Black Jack's wife is due to her actually being over 30.

    With Black Jack I am going OG. I choose to read the mango, knowing full well Tezuka was not that great at animation, and the still drawings will PROBABLY be better at telling the story always meant for that medium.
    TL;DR Tezuka is called God of Manga for a reasons.

    I heard somewhere that Tezuka made Black Jack because he didn't like the fact that people can sue doctors for malpractice, and that Black Jack himself is a capitalist and class traitor. But I couldn't find the source for that so I'm probably way off base!
