- We've been covering Slayers for quite awhile now and since we've finally finished off the TV show for the time being, it is now time to take the next logical step into the prequel movie series. How exactly does this movie compare to the the TV anime and, more importantly, what exactly is Naga's deal?

For anyone that might care, Naga is meant to be a over-the-top parody of D&D player and tropes. Along with being a DD in bikini armor, her name is fake and meant to be laughably edgelord (Naga means "serpent", so she calls herself "Serpent the Serpent" or "Snake the Snake")
It's also hinted at that she's to be Princess Amelia's older sister.
Kanzaka officially confirmed that she’s Amelia’s sister. Her full name is Gracia Ul Naga Saillune.
Tbf most, if not all of, Slayers is a parody of DnD. The most fitting description i've heard is that Slayers is "A bunch of drunk, hungry idiots bringing their Prestige characters to mess with the DM".

@[ Shana Reviews ] Honestly it does feel Very accurate though. Joy rock doesn't see humanity as laudable or even as humans. They are just toys for his amusement and food. The fact that he acts like a Warners cartoon character kind of adds to that. There are being a power beyond human comprehension for the most part. So they play that up to the nines. At least until they encountered somebody who's more than easily able to put them in their place such as Lina. At that point all of the freakin masks dropped to the floor and he is completely terrified of just what he is fighting.
The voice of that old man explaining to Lena about the hot spring is Mike Judge. Creator of Bevess and Butthead, and King of the Hill, he voiced all three by the way.

@@ininja32 It's true, ADV Films shared a recording studio with King of the Hill and they were able to rope Judge in for the bit part. It's not the first time that a Slayers dub got a surprisingly big name for a supporting role, Mark Hamill played the Golden Dragon Elder in TRY.
Naga is my favorite anime character. It's that damn laugh that pushes her from being a great character to the best.
Frog: "I'm Joyrock, Michigan J"
That's a reference to that Looney Toons episode about that singing frog.
It's also fair to mention that Naga is Amelia's sister and the "missing Princess" they keep mentioning.
Naga the Serpent is perhaps my fav Slayers character.
She only appears in the Movies and the OVAs, the best one is the OVA/Movie where she and Leina are involved in making Golems for the father and son who are rivals against each other.
well technically her soul is in the tv series but theres also 11 other nagas unless the homuclus duplicates died but reverse naga and reverse lina should be around somewhere

The reverse Leina was so scared of hurting others, while reverse Naga was too embarrassed because of her outfit.
That was another highlight of the Slayers series outside the main series.
ah yes Naga ! I seen the movie before the serie and 13 years old me was dissapointed she wasn't in the serie.
This was my into into the Slayers and it will always hold a special place to me. I loved it so much that I even memorized this version of the Dragon Slave which I can still recite from memory today. "The drama!" Is one of my all time favorite lines. I'll always have a fondness for this voice for Lina to.
first saw slayers in the international channel, then seen the slayers movie on block buster, didn't get to hear the new york va's till they released the dvd set. cynthia martinez to me will always be my og lina voice
Thank you for loving this anime as much as I do. I appreciate your videos so much they are a blast from the past for me for sure. Slayers is not only my absolute favourite series, but one of the first anime series I ever got to lay my eyes upon. I even own cards I found for sale when I went to high school in Japan back in 2001. Man I feel old.
I wish a blu-ray release would occur.
If anyone knows of the 90s H OVA called Sexy Demon Queen, this is the version of Slayers with Leina and Naga that the H OVA parodied in order to make Sexy Demon Queen.
Lina Inverse is the one reason Gourry was born in the first place.

Ah yea! Dragon Half! I loved the manga, then I got excited when I heard it got an anime adaptation... all 3 or 4 episodes of one :(
I wonder if Karen from 'Street Fighter Alpha 3' was inspired by Naga.
Naga appeared around with Kodachi Kuno from Ranma 1/2 as the crazed laughing noblewoman and both series were HUGE in Japan so probably.
Every year, these Slayers episodes are a treat! I'm always looking forward to them!
i actually prefer the movies and ovas over the tv series,mostly because of naga

thanks for letting me know that the movies were 2 years prior to meeting gary. i always figure it was an alternate universe thing when i watch it original. Now i got a better idea when it all take place between in the anime universe.
Adv since went bankrupt, reformed as Sentai Filmworks with same staff.
I've got some dread in me for when we get to Revolution since I know some people who seem to absolutely despise that series... But I absolutely love it! Lmao
As a huge Slayers fan, I don't have any particularly strong feelings against Revolution, I enjoy it, but I did feel that a few aspects were a let-down for me personally. But never enough for me to outright hate them. And plus, they reunited about 98% of the iconic and beloved (by me at least) English voice cast for it, so if nothing else, it will have my eternal respect, even if for that alone. But as for the much ballyhooed Series 4 and 5 of Slayers that combine to form Revolution as a whole? I found it at least a fun little trip down memory lane and a generally enjoyable adventure.
I'd like to recommend the Devil Hunter Yohko OVA series for a future video!
I recent bought the dvds for the ovas and movies and now doing a rewatch of the tv show. Im so mad it took me so many years to watch the movies and ovas there so funny. Im dying on all of them and it makes me sad Naga isnt really in the show and is now one of my fav Slayer char now.
Like I said in a previous video this can't be a prequel to the series is because Lina did not recognize the Sword of Light and it looks like that Lina is wearing the magic boosters.
For some reason I never got into Slayers back in the day, but this looks awesome!

I watched this movie last night and I must say that I much prefer Naga and Lina's adventures compared to the ones in the show. Not saying I don't like the series, but, these two just have such a great comedic chemistry and of course the animation quality just destroys the series hands down.
The OAVs/Movies saga are also kinds weird in the timeline. While the movies are prequels to the series, the two OAV's collections (Excellent and Book of Spells) are in return prequels of the movies. Excellent in particual have the earliest chronological adventures in the entire animated saga (including the moment in which Naga and Lina met), despite being the second to last in the release order of the OAVs/Movies (1998).
I suppose the tricky timeline is one of the reason the OAV/Movies arent well know even within part the fandom (as well as the fact they are kinda rare to find, especially in non-english countries)
The motion picture was the first time I ever seen slayers and was a fan ever since. Definitely one of my favorite anime and anime movies as well.

idk if it's because I started with the movie first before the show, but i've always loved Lina and Naga's chemistry because it just worked so much better for me.
Another thing that might get me some ire is that....I....kinda prefer Cynthia as Lina
I love the idea of Slayers, but I couldn't get into the series. I watched the first season and couldn't be bothered to watch the other seasons. Does it just start slow?
Kind of, yes. Slayers Next (the second season) is much better in terms of characterization, story and comedy. I'd recommend giving it a shot.

Yessss, I love this movie and have been waiting for your review of it. I think it's my favorite piece of animated Slayers media outside of Next. Just a really enjoyable movie. While the plot is fairly meandering with low stakes compared to the series, I still dig it a lot. The humor is excellent (the 'strongest man on this island' bit is my favorite) and I do like how this movie does at least try to maintain some balance between comedy and drama, even if it leans heavily towards comedy. Joyrock is just a delight too, he's my second favorite Slayers villain. Also, it has Midnight Blue, which is absolutely favorite Slayers song.
I wish the tv series dub cast were in the movies and ova.
Movie budget in the 90's meant better overall animation but the story is definitely lacking. Simple to a fault.
A shame this series never got any video games outside of a couple of Japan only TTRPG's on the Saturn and PS1.

The Motion Picture is probably my second least favourite of the movies. I much prefer the story of Return or Gorgeous which are more focused while still being comedic. Also the latter has the plot twist of the Princess having rebelled and stolen all of her kingdoms lesser dragons because her dad won't raise her allowance. Also the running gag of the villain doing villain laughter and Naga scaring the shit out of him by coming out of nowhere to join in the laughter.
Never notices until just now in regards to Naga. for someone who's daily clothing is more revealing than her swimsuit. is fun two that she has two capes. gotta love that detail

Unpopular opinion: I always preferred Cynthia Martinez to Lisa Ortiz. Cynthia gave Lina this gruffer, more firey portrayal, a Lina who is always one misstep from losing her shit over anything. Lisa was just too high-pitched and sounded sorta childish, more like a kid having a temper tantrum than a woman having a freakout. OverallI prefer my Lina Inverse to be a bitch, not a brat.

This was my first experience with the Slayers from a trailer from a Tekken anime DVD (the trailers were honestly the best part of that package to be honest) and I didn't watch it until after watching the series (the first 3 at the time of release), Premium & the Excellent OVAs, then I finally watched the movie.

I have been wanting to watch this movie for a while getting into the TV series. I was a bit hesitant since I learned that the voice for Lina was not the same as the show. It can be difficult when you are used to a certain voice and then you hear another voice, but seeing the history of it and your description put me at ease about it. I really like the 90's fantasy adventure fun that Slayers gives off and I really like the videos you make about this series and shows around this time.
easy solution: watch the sub, Megumi Hayashibara is one of the greatest Voice actresses of all time, in any language. She gets regularly compared t Mel Blanc, June Foray, and Frank Welker

Maybe i'm very biased as I LOVE the TV series dub and the absolutely iconic voice cast, particularly Lisa Ortiz as Lina, who, in my opinion, I enjoy even over Megami Hayashibara.... but I absolutely LOATHE the ADV Slayers dubs for the most part. In particular I cannot stand Cynthia Martinez's take on the character in particular. I hate the ADV dubs for the feature films and movies SO much to the point where, even though I am a gigantic Slayers fan, I can barely watch them. I rarely watch subs of anything unless there is no other alternative, but I have such a deep seeded hatred of the ADV Slayers specials and movie dubs, that i'll watch it subtitled rather than dubbed, something i'm known for being vehement against, normally.
Thus when it comes to the movies and the animated specials, I always watch them with somewhat of a grimace, while trying to at least imagine as best I can what these movies and specials would have and could have sounded like with the cast I know and love.
P.S My dislike of Martinez isn't just because of her potrayal of Lina, either. I found her similarly insufferable in another one of my favorite guilty pleasure OVA's, Galaxy Fraulein Yuna as the title character, who reduces her down to a shrill, squealing, glass-shattering bimbo who reads 60% of her lines in a way that renders much of what she's saying incomprehensible, not the least helped by her atrocious singing. I almost always am the first to sing the praises of English anime VA's, but i've always had a bit of a grudge against Cynthia Martinez for taking two of my favorite female characters in anime and ruining both of them. Also for shouting and screeching her lines in a way that's almost always distracting and inappropriately grating. She's one of my least favorite voice actresses of all time.

While the animation in this film is great, I feel like this is the weakest out of the 90s Slayers films. I felt the other films flowed a little better with their pacing, with their set pieces having more impact and more memorable moments as well. Particularly, the giant mecha fight between Lina and Naga was a big highlight from the third film.
Or Lina & Naga fleeing from a Golem that is immune to magic and accidentally luring it into a town.
I'm starting to believe that the English dub main issues on every anime even right now is the fact that they keep using American voices instead of multiple English dialects to match the character.
