I just noticed that Auguste's piece of gold is the biggest therefore the heaviest so it's like he carries around the heaviest guilt of all the children. Probably making it the hardest for him to keep carrying it
Another nice detail is that Auguste was the only one to not pick his own piece. This with your observation could imply that the other kids decided to blame Auguste for the death.
@@guilhermegigeck5946 also, Auguste is the only one who doesn't help the man carry the corpse. Maybe it's partly bc he's the youngest one, he might be, maybe he's not that strong but still an interesting detail. Him being the youngest might also imply that he's the purest of them all, and his gut feeling/ his conscience simply didn't leave him alone
I noticed that too! Although the cut off ending might seem to be up for interpretation, I feel like the straight cut to black is an indication to a complete loss of innocence- meaning Auguste was shot at that moment
I love how “How could they?” could be Auguste wondering about how the other children could betray him like this and is also the kids trying to alleviate their guilt by convincing themselves there was nothing they could do to stop the hunter
They actually changed the translation, the actual translation would be the word 'impossible'. I don't know if they did it on purpose (they probably did), but both versions are ambiguous and could be any of the children saying it (so I still agree with you!)
@@tonotbenamed6565 oh cool!! I’m always worried I’m going 2 miss something in foreign videos because the translation might not be totally accurate so thank you!
Yeah « impossible » in French is more than just how it’s used in English! It does mean « not possible » but also shows incredulity, shock, and disbelief. So translating it into « how could they » is really quite fitting in meaning if not in literal translation.
The soft style combined with the harsh horrors faced by the children is really amazing. It tells such a fantastic story, but I hope the little boy is okay. The other children are scared of being killed by the hunter, but they shouldn’t kill their friend. The narrator is also very good, they have a great voice, good pacing, and emphasize in the right places.
The fate of little Auguste is left to the imagination. But the context forces you to objectively ask yourself: "Why do you imagine the other children will kill him?" Can fear and greed kill a child's love and innocence?
I took it as greed not sacredness as they played reenactments of the murder. They hugged their gold tight and they called Auguste a traitor. I didn't see fear.
@@RadioForYahweh All the other children also have bright yellow/white eyes like the hunter while Auguste's are brown. They really stuck out to me as a really little cue that they could go to the same lengths
That open ending is what sells this. You will never know whether or not they shot Auguste, or if the horsemen arrived in time. That sudden cut could imply anything, and we'll never know. And that alone is extremely terrifying.
@ɮօʊռċɛ օʄʄ The french text actually leaves an open end. It actually says "They decide to get rid of him" instead of the definitive " the rest of the children get rid of him", so Idk if its a small translation error.
Spoiler It wasn’t until rewatching that I figured out the parallel between the pomegranate, the dead man, and their connection to the bird. Pomegranates are often symbolic of life, and well, the latter is self-explanatory. Just another way to show the children’s descent into malice. Bravo, Gobelins.
Love this one. The soft lineless style really lends itself to a storybook feel. How it depicts the cycle of violence and abuse. How the abused becomes the abuser when they refuse to address trauma. So sad how badly they felt they needed to hide their guilt when they were innocent until the moment they decided to inflict violence on one of their own. The open ending is really great too. I doubt there was still a bullet in the chamber, but if he was killed the horsemen would find them red-handed. 10/10 very beautiful
the gold had no value for the children. would've been rocks to them any other day.. the first and only time they saw it, gold came out of a corpse slaughtered in cold blood. part in a murder, a death, betrayal, greed, violence through rocks is what was shared. to each a token of guilt, pain, fear but mostly guilt not to buy their silence - their truth - but to invoke in them a lie. not his but their own. because the deed was now theirs too. they held the bounty in their hands. to some that would have sufficed but innocence is formidable. it is life itself. so they traded the equals, their innocence for the man's gift of life. in this sense, the gold was also life?? my baby auguste was the smallest, the bravest.
i think gold was a striking metaphor because just like people want to keep their gold, they are often as jealous of their trauma, and don't want to "give it away" which is an interesting phenomenon
I've watched this short film multiple times now and I'm stunned by the story and the visuals every time. I noticed how Auguste never actually helped with the hiding of the man's body (the other kids drag the body but he lingers behind), but by staying silent, he's complicit in the murder. I'm convinced that the hunter wasn't going to come back and kill them, but their fear resulted in the gun being fired, implying the truth would be exposed anyway, even if they had to kill one of their own to protect themselves. In trying to protect themselves and ignore the weight of their actions, they exposed themselves and the crime they committed...
I absolutely love storytelling like this. Things start off so whimsical but as things get bleaker the audience, in all their cynical glory, begins to recognize the usual defects of human nature and the fairy tale world starts to crumble at the edges.
The story telling of this is on a whole new level. I could sit here and analyse every colour shift and all the symbolism but I’m just going to watch it again.
An interesting touch is the hunters eyes. They are a very distinct color and at the end, when the other children are pointing the rifle at Auguste, they show an image of one taking aim and his eyes are the same color as the hunters. Edit: at 1:27 there is a shot of all of their eyes and it's not just the one who points the rifle at the end. All of the other children have light eyes like the hunter's, except for Auguste with his brown ones.
The thing I love most about this are the small details which contribute to the overall message, like how Auguste has different coloured eyes or how at 2:26 he sits slightly away from all the other kids or how the game of hide and seek could represent the kids reactions to the murder. I also love how the song-like script, simple (but incredible) music and animation style all contribute to the story book feel but it contrasts with the dark themes or compliance and trauma. In short: I really, really love this.
think about how true this is in the world. from sexual assault to discovery of plunder or corruption. how have we become too easily silenced by abusers? do we value our life more than the truth?
i love that they cut it in the end. "Was Auguste saved?" "Were the horsemen on time?" or...? it's great that they just leaved it up to imagination and as a topic of conversation, that itself makes it art. Amazing as always for giving us great content Gobelins!
I feel that the hunter really came to devour them after all. But more in figurative way: they killed August and were taken by horsemen for murder. Btw, I love parallel between pomegranate and man with gold pieces in his stomach.
I expected the hunters to kill the dear, therefore symbolizing innocence being literally killed in front of the kids, in the end he didn't kill the animal, but innocence died anyway. Man, these animations are amazing, it's been more than an hour and I can't stop watching them.
This is some of the cleanest animation I've seen in a hot minute. The style it's in made me think it wouldn't be, and yet it's so crisp and beautiful. Honestly, this is a new favorite for me.
For anyone wondering if they shot Auguste, it is very unlikely that they would have been able to, since the rifles from that era could only fire one shot at a time. That means that the hunter would have had to left ammunition for the gun with the children, which he did not. On top of that, they likely would not know how to load the gun properly either, making it either backfire, or not go off at all.
Wow. Beautiful. Especially the ending scene parallel. At the start: 1: The hunters are chasing an animal 2: The Hunter shot the other hunter 3: He grabs the gold out of his chest 1: The Hunter grabbing the gold 2: The kids grabbing the gun 3: The kids trying to shoot Auguste.

Confess to a crime I've never committed... to save another that will never have admitted... I take my lashes, and strike them out... to save another without a doubt
Why are these 7 kids kept away in the beginning? Is this a symbol of anything? I like the tone and the way it talks about the obedience coming from fear. The 6 don't even try to think about the justice and confine the truth and their conscience behind the bars of the gate. Their obedience is an evil action against the goodness. We don't know anything about their growth and their connection with the outside world. Chances are that the short talks about a narrow-minded governmental/institutional group that always make the decisions under the circumstances of being controlled and threatened by the powerful ruler.
what style of art would you call this? I see it in picture books sometimes, it’s beautiful. I’d also like to see more from this animator. Does anybody know what their name is?

👍
Magnifique !
I love the ending tbh bcthe horsemen will arrive seeing the others had killed the youngest & thus they reaceve the worst punishment
Nah
when the children reenacted the crime and the others laughed, i knew they were long gone.
😣😔
I love this animation style's texture!! OMG it's gorgeous!
Even if they didn't get their on time I'm sure they would have found out what they'd done. I'd liked to think they made it buuuut idk and want ever know. Gorgeous style. I really love this
To me, they arrived as soon as the trigger were pulled
Exquisite, the artstyle and atmosphere are really inspiring.
Every time I rewatch this I feel evermore uneasy
Makes me think of all the crimes to which I’m guilty
But it’s too late to confess
Confess; I should ....
but I digress
Confess to a crime I've never committed... to save another that will never have admitted... I take my lashes, and strike them out... to save another without a doubt
I need it! 😍
Ahhhhhh I love this short animation I've been waiting to be uploaded on TH-cam!!!!!!!!!!!!
I wonder if Auguste's clothes, the only ones that had more than one color, was a bit of foreshadowing as well.
Super travail Antoine et Mathilde !!
omg style of this animation..... i want to draw like this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! those textures and cold eyes
aaaaa
Graphisme magnifique et quelle poésie !
The sound design is incredible. Wow.
This feels like a fucked up childhood memory.
A cautionary tale about keeping dangerous secrets
Nothing short of brilliant.
what style of art would you call this? I see it in picture books sometimes, it’s beautiful. I’d also like to see more from this animator. Does anybody know what their name is?
Mathilde Loubes, Antoine Bonnet
I think it was reference to pointalistic paintings.
the SOUND EFFECTS
Thank you for English subtitles!

I just can say... amzing work guys!
my heart kept racing throughout it all
this is freaking wonderful
I'm speechless
