    TLP's bad rep is undeserved. It's incredible for what it achieved technically, and gameplay detractors have to consider the context from when it was made - what people wanted to play at the time was different. Simply making a custom chapter was an achievement. It's only more recently, as tech has made hacking way easier, that gameplay has come to be such a key focus and preferences/appetites changed. Even if elements haven't aged well, it's still a fully custom hack w/ a lot of effort that most hacks don't even attempt to achieve even with better tools and support. TLP is iconic and I always recommend it for anyone interested in romhacks and their history.

      I think people opinion on TLP have changed. Even today with easier tools, most of the hacks en dup unfinished, and the finished ones are 95% of the time shorter and less complete (support/endgame) than TLP. It's still an incredible tour de force, and it ooze SOUL for every pore

      It has his flaws but that's what you could expect from a 15 yeard old guy writing something dumb, so it can't be blamed a lot

    It's impossible to ignore the jankiness and edgy dialogue but I can't deny how much charm a project like this oozes.
    "This divine lightning shall pierce the skies!" is genuinely a really cool line, let alone a spoken one.

    For a really long time, TLP was the only finished romhack that wasn't a reskin. People would often say that other romhacks, like Dream of Five, were better, but then none of them were ever completed. Even if now there are arguable better romhacks, TLP was the first to be finished, and it deserves praise for it.

    I played “The last promise” and It was a absolute masterpiece for the time as the tools needed to make it were not really that advanced so seeing this rom hack basically push those simple tools to limits was amazing for the time.

    This game still to this day is my favorite fe game.
    I know it's a rom hack but it has the heart and soul of a real fe game and I remember playing this game over and over years ago.
    From the music to the characters I love this game.
    I even did fan art for it when I was younger.
    Blazer is truly a treasure and I'm happy to have played this game!

    I don't think I'll ever get over us (mostly Blazer) making TLP in our teens. I had just learned how to make maps that could actually be inserted into ROMs, and no one else signed up to work on the maps after a handful, so I asked Blazer to just keep sending me map prompts, and I just kep churning them out. I felt so bad for Blazer when everyone started jumping ship once they made their OCs, so I stuck with it and he was always so understanding if it took longer than expected to make the maps or they didn't turn out and I needed to re do them.

    So after recently playing through tlp again i can say that yes this game is not very good lol, however the obvious amount of effort and heart put into this game and the fact it was one of the first REAl romhacks makes it great in my book for those 2 things alone.

    I would recommend this game for any GBA fire emblem fans. I think it's very similar in feel to fe6/7 normal mode or fe8 hard (although tlp endgame is harder of course). It's like a fresh experience.
    The statement by the creator seems like a pretty accurate take on the situation, and what you said in the video is pretty much what I've seen too. Anytime someone mentions this hack it's rare to here an opinion by someone that's played it

    I didn't even know TLP was polarizing in the community, it was enjoyable experience and quite a nice little gem. And that's what matters to me, not some random totally trustworthy dudes yapping about stuff they mostly biased against.
    One of a few hacks that I truly loved and even fewer that I've finished. Wherever you are Blazer and your team, thank you for this awesome hack.

    I really liked The Last Promise.
    I knew about the gameplay balance issues, but I really liked the story and the characters. Kelik was rather edgy, but it wasn't to an unreasonable degree, and he did get a decent character arc about accepting his friends and comrades instead of trying to do everything by himself.

    I have replayed The Last Promise since this video came out; while my opinions haven't changed much, I can safely say that the game is very much worth going back to, opposite to what I said in the video. It won't be as monumental as it was when it first came out, but the game is still quite enjoyable to go through.

    The Last Promise was and still is my favorite Fire Emblem rom hack. Mind you im not some old head who played it when it came out, I got into Fe rom hacks like 3 years ago and The Last Promise as a game just has a feeling of genuineness and charm that a lot of Fire Emblem Rom Hacks good or bad dont have. I legit like it more than the whole actual Gba trilogy and Kelik and Anakin are top Fire Emblem characters.

  • @Boukansha

    I played through TLP three or four times, and I will admit that the hack as many, many flaws.
    But the hack is still fun.
    That's right, it's fun.
    I can overlook its flaws because is fun and it has a lot of heart and soul poured into it.
    I feel like the FE community is too snobby at times.
    They want everything to be X, Y, and Z to be considered "good".
    What matters the most is if the hack is fun to play.
    I don't care if a hack is perfect. if it's fun, it's good.
    Hackers shouldn't stress much about pleasing people.
    They should worry about making the hack fun to play and finishing the marathon.

    • @ResurgentRaven

    I finished The Last Promise and it definitely felt more like a Tellius game with how difficult it was. However, it had a lot of things going for it. The story, while not exactly super fleshed out, was unique in its own right and had a certain charm that I don't normally see in other games.
    I enjoyed a lot of the maps, although some were just downright annoying (the first fog of war map and Lanmark's chapter mainly).
    The difficulty was certainly there, as explained earlier. I didn't find the game mind numbingly difficult, and enjoyed the overall pacing.
    The worldbuilding wasn't... the greatest, primarily because there wasn't an actual map to go off of, unlike the other GBA titles. So I did get lost trying to remember where every country was.
    The supports were okay, but I don't expect a lot out of pre Awakening supports. Really, the best thing about the supports were the absurd bonuses. Easily some of the best bonuses in any FE game.
    I played The Four Kings romhack at some point and paused after 10 chapters and just stared at the screen saying, "And people like THIS over Last Promise?!"
    Opinions be opinions, I'd like to thank Blazer for his work on this. I think it still holds up today, and although I've heard him say he won't do any more romhacks anytime soon (or never), I think he a dang fine job.

    No offense to Vision Quest but I still think TLP is the best fe romhack.

    • @reyesle6709
      @reyesle6709 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      One of the problems that I have with vision quest is its enemy:player ratio, especially on hard mode, and ESPECIALLY through mid part-2 and onwards. The units that you get, while they come in quantities, are most of the time weaker than the enemies you face. They are also very underleveled, so you have to stick with units that you’ve already trained up.

    • @ResurgentRaven
      @ResurgentRaven ปีที่แล้ว

      @@reyesle6709Four Kings had the same problem. Most of the units came with their own personal weapons, but most of them also had garbage stats to compensate.

    Bad game, Good game doesn't matter honestly. It was still one of the earliest FEGBA ROM Hacks which is an achievement in of itself. It doesn't matter if the writing of the game is terrible, its still the first of its kind and nothing can change that. Its like Sigmund Freud in the field of psychology, he's the first of his kind, controversial he may be, his influence still exists throughout.

  • @Erikk_is_Tired

    Imagine spending hours on end designing nearly completely unique sprites for characters and storylines and to make it into an interactive game for it to be made fun of by people who haven't even played it.
    Blazer bent over backwards to make a hack for people to play, to possibly enjoy or probably provide something to him what he could've done better.
    Criticism and belittling are two different things ppl. If someone were to say; "Edgy man sucks bad hack." And nothing else, that's useless. However criticism would be something more like the following: "Kelik is very stubborn and acts edgy which overall it isn't that fun to deal with because he doesn't seem to have any personality outside of it."
    If someone doesn't like something that doesn't bring harm to anyone, there should be very little reason to be actively negative about it.
    Overall I think TLP is a buggy mess that is worth time because it was a leap into the unknown to make a new game entirely out of a handful of people.
    Other than some balance issues and maybe the difficulty spike, it wasn't that hard. Story was lacking but some new things definitely made it look nice.
    Also 14 mov Kevin is the best unit.

      @0715yt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    This just came on my feed randomly but I remember when this hack came out and I played through it a bit later around 2016. Honestly for a product of its time, The Last Promise is a technical marvel that paved the way for other ROM hacks to build off what Blazer created. TLP isn't perfect and sure does have some junky map design and enemy placements but it has heart and passion put into it. And as for the detractors who demean without ever trying it, I'd like to see them put even half the amount of effort Blazer did for a project of this size.
    Great video

    I was into hacking at the time this game was current, and I talked to Blazer often. He was always nice to me and helped me out often.

  • @hadoukenfighter
    @hadoukenfighter 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    as someone that actually saw it become "tactics universe" to "the last promise" I can't state enough how amazing this hack was for its time and while sure it might not have aged like fine wine, its still a balanced experience that really needs to be played because its the ABSOLUTE core of the entire hacking community and by itself its pretty damn good honestly, yeah the writing is kinda edgy but I've seen far more edger hacks and some of those are actual trash that I am extremely hesitant to draw attention too.
    so yeah, Last Promise good, not perfect, but good, and I'd struggle to not recommend it to anyone that wants to dip their toes into romhacks.

    My lukewarm take is that Kelik's edginess is way overstated. First of all, there are waaaaay more pointlessly edgy characters in Fire Emblem that you even get to play. Rutger, Peri, Black Knight, Vega, Jaffar, Dmitri, soforth. Second of all, TLP does two things that Fire Emblem tends not to do with its pointlessly edgy characters: one, the other characters get to call Kelik out on his edginess and make him look dumb. Does someone like Karel or Vaida ever get dressed down and have to eat shit? No, but Kelik does. Second of all, his supports actually have him grow as a character.

    Honestly, this hack (that is more an entirely new game than a hack) deserves a remake
    Making a complete game is a daunting task, and most people (that havent even tried) don't get it
    Of course, rebalancing some levels, completing some character arcs and with modifying the edginess (one of it's charming points) to make it work can do wonders
    And adding mechanics of other entries too (skills for starters, and doing something about the ultraannoying con stat, that determines weapon speed penalty)
